  • Swallowing impairment is a frequent complication following stroke. The characteristics of swallowing impairment with stork patient can facilitate identification of individuals at risk of dysphagia would be of great helpful. The present study examined oropharyngeal swallowing impairment with subacute stroke patients using the Modified Barium Swallowing Impairment Profile(MBSImP). The 49 consecutive patients with the supratentorial stroke met inclusion criteria for the present study. A retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent the videofluoroscopic swallowing study(VFSS). Of Stroke patients, 95.9% exhibited abnormal function of lip closure. 98% and 57.1 % shown abnormal tongue function and lingual motion, respectively. Oral residue was present in 51% and delayed pharyngeal response was present in 89.9%. In addition, abnormal laryngeal and hyoid excursion was seen in 42.9% and 87.8%, respectively. Abnormal function of soft palate elevation was present in 18.4% and abnormal epiglottic movement was seen in 4.1%. 30.6% of 30.6% of these patients exhibited abnormal laryngeal closure. All of the stroke patients(100%) in this study exhibited abnormal pharyngeal stripping wave and pharyngoesophageal segment opening. Abnormal tongue base retraction and oral reside were present 91.8%, respectively. The results suggest that stroke patient is more likely to exhibit reduced swallowing functions including lip closure, tongue control, initiation of pharyngeal swallow, anterior hyoid motion, tongue base retraction, pharyngeal residue and pharyngoesophageal contraction. Therefore, these data could provide valid and precise information regarding physiological evidence to delineate symptoms of dysphagia in this stroke cohort. Future studies should explore the bolus effect in the swallowing impairment.

  • As the execution speed of Python is slower than those of other programming languages (e.g., C, C++, and FORTRAN), Python is not considered to be efficient for writing numerical geodynamic code that requires numerous iterations. Recently, many computational techniques, such as the Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler, have been developed to enhance the calculation speed of Python. Here, we developed two-dimensional (2D) numerical geodynamic code that was optimized for the JIT compiler, based on Python. Our code simulates mantle convection by combining the Particle-In-Cell (PIC) scheme and the finite element method (FEM), which are both commonly used in geodynamic modeling. We benchmarked well-known mantle convection problems to evaluate the reliability of our code, which confirmed that the root mean square velocity and Nusselt number obtained from our numerical modeling were consistent with those of the mantle convection problems. The matrix assembly and PIC processes in our code, when run with the JIT compiler, successfully achieved a speed-up 30× and 258× faster than without the JIT compiler, respectively. Our Python-based FEM-PIC code shows the high potential of Python for geodynamic modeling cases that require complex computations.

  • This study is to create a deep learning based classification model to examine the characteristics of panic disorder and to classify the panic disorder tendency literature by the panic disorder corpus constructed for the present study. For this purpose, 5,884 documents of the panic disorder corpus collected from social media were directly annotated based on the mental disease diagnosis manual and were classified into panic disorder-prone and non-panic-disorder documents. Then, TF-IDF scores were calculated and word co-occurrence analysis was performed to analyze the lexical characteristics of the corpus. In addition, the co-occurrence between the symptom frequency measurement and the annotated symptom was calculated to analyze the characteristics of panic disorder symptoms and the relationship between symptoms. We also conducted the performance evaluation for a deep learning based classification model. Three pre-trained models, BERT multi-lingual, KoBERT, and KcBERT, were adopted for classification model, and KcBERT showed the best performance among them. This study demonstrated that it can help early diagnosis and treatment of people suffering from related symptoms by examining the characteristics of panic disorder and expand the field of mental illness research to social media.

  • This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of an interactive singing-based synchronous videoconferencing program for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study was conducted in four stages: analysis of interactive singing tasks in the literature for children with ASD, examination of differences in perception of sounds transmitted via synchronous videoconferencing platform depending on the type of singing tasks and accompaniment, construction of singing-based synchronous videoconferencing program and determination of its validity, and implementation of the constructed program with three children with ASD and confirmation of its feasibility. The results showed that different types of singing tasks and accompaniment affected perception of sounds transmitted online, which highlights the importance of considering such effects when designing synchronous videoconferencing music therapy programs. Also, increases in program engagement and singing behaviors were observed for all three participants, and their caregivers reported high levels of satisfaction with the program. The findings support the applicability of this intervention as a tele-music alternative during the COVID-19 pandemic. Clinical implications and suggestions are discussed.

  • The exiting word embedding methodology such as word2vec represents words, which only occur in the raw training corpus, as a fixed-length vector into a continuous vector space, so when mapping the words incorporated in the raw training corpus into a fixed-length vector in morphologically rich language, out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem often happens. Even for sentence embedding, when representing the meaning of a sentence as a fixed-length vector by synthesizing word vectors constituting a sentence, OOV words make it challenging to meaningfully represent a sentence into a fixed-length vector. In particular, since the agglutinative language, the Korean has a morphological characteristic to integrate lexical morpheme and grammatical morpheme, handling OOV words is an important factor in improving performance. In this paper, we propose parallel Tri-LSTM sentence embedding that is robust to the OOV problem by extending utilizing the morphological information of words into sentence-level. As a result of the sentiment analysis task with corpus in Korean, we empirically found that the character unit is better than the morpheme unit as an embedding unit for Korean sentence embedding. We achieved 86.17% accuracy on the sentiment analysis task with the parallel bidirectional Tri-LSTM sentence encoder.

  • Vietnam is a country where the largest number of Korean companies have branched out, and calibers who can speak Vietnamese are on great demands. In the multicultural classroom, students of Vietnamese background occupy the first or second largest composition among students with multicultural backgrounds; therefore, if teachers can teach in Vietnamese, the positive effects can be promising. This study presents and evaluates a Vietnamese language class developed and operated for the first time in Korea by a university to raise prospective teachers' global-multicultural competences. Two series of the classes were conducted during two vacations of 2018, and 20 students participated. As a results, the groups showed a significant increase in the global-multicultural competences; About 95 percent of the participants demonstrated improvement in the competences. The participants stated opinions: the classes should expand to offer opportunities for many other students who may want to acquire Vietnamese; the participants had better understandings of the Vietnamese cultures, envisioned their role as a Vietnamese speaker and suggested extended opportunities for contacts with Vietnamese cultures. The study hopes that other universities apply the educational model and the case study and that, as a result, teachers can contribute to building harmonious Korean-Vietnamese relations using Vietnamese.

  • The agricultural ecosystem is one of the major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In order to search for climate change adaptation options which mitigate GHG emissions while maintaining crop yield, it is advantageous to integrate multiple models at a high spatial resolution. The objective of this study was to develop a tool to support integrated assessment of climate change impact b y coupling the DSSAT model and the DNDC model. DNDC Regional Input File Tool(DRIFT) was developed to prepare input data for the regional mode of DNDC model using input data and output data of the DSSAT model. In a case study, GHG emissions under the climate change conditions were simulated using the input data prepared b y the DRIFT. The time to prepare the input data was increased b y increasing the number of grid points. Most of the process took a relatively short time, while it took most of the time to convert the daily flood depth data of the DSSAT model to the flood period of the DNDC model. Still, processing a large amount of data would require a long time, which could be reduced by parallelizing some calculation processes. Expanding the DRIFT to other models would help reduce the time required to prepare input data for the models.

  • The spread of non-face-to-face culture due to COVID-19 led to innovation in untact services and the increase of non-face-to-face communication through video conference platforms. However, it is difficult to identify nonverbal expressions in synchronous online communication. Moreover, it is hard to interact with people by making eye contact. Despite the positive effects of eye contact, including such as sharing emotions and helping build intimacy, no research has empirically verified the effectiveness of eye contact in synchronous online communication. Thus, the study verified the effectiveness of eye contact in synchronous online communication. Depending on the context of the communication and whether(or not) there is eye contact, six video treatments were used to measure four dependent variables-Continuance Intention to Use, Performance Expectancy, Interactivity, and Personal Connection. The study shows that the communication with eye contact in all contexts was rated higher than the one without eye contact in all measurement variables. This study will help to provide a better user experience in synchronous online communication by verifying the effectiveness of eye contact in synchronous online communication and proposing the need of technology and the direction of the technological development.

  • This study suggests the need for polar literacy education as an effective conceptual system to explain climate change in terms of science education in line with the common effort of humankind to respond to global environmental changes. To this end, we investigated the status of polar literacy in high school students through quantitative tests and qualitative interviews and discussed the resulting implications. A total of 329 high school sophomore students from two high schools participated in a test consisting of 25 true and false questions developed by referring to the Polar Literacy Principles, while 13 students agreed to be interviewed. The results showed that a somewhat insufficient understanding and conceptual gaps appeared regarding several areas of the Polar Literacy Principles. Knowledge of the geographic features of the polar regions was weak, and little was known about the components and key characteristics of the cryosphere. The lack of understanding of these concepts results in the inability of students to link the operational mechanisms of polar and global climate change sufficiently. While accepting unsatisfactory concepts in the school curriculum without criticism from outside media, students perceived the mechanism of climate change as somewhat monotonous or distorted. Moreover, linguistic information, analogies, and visual observation were used as cognitive strategies to compensate for the ambiguous understanding of polar and climate change. Based on the abovementioned results, we argue that polar literacy education should be introduced as a new knowledge system that can be used to aid a systematic and comprehensive understanding of climate change within the school science curriculum. Additionally, we suggest the following implications: review the consistency of knowledge related to polar literacy in other subjects, provide critical standards for out-of-school media information related to climate change, examine students' misconceptions, and identify improved thinking strategies.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Read Along by Google with primary English learners' pronunciation and affective domains. In order to answer these two questions, a 4-week pilot study was conducted with 24 participants in the 6 th grade. Read Along as a main learning tool was utilized for a reading-aloud activity, and a pre-/post pronunciation test and survey on the affective factors were distributed as a research instrument. The results indicated that a read-aloud activity with Read Along brought a positive impact on the development of learners' pronunciation ability in terms of accuracy and fluency. Participants showed improvement in the post-pronunciation test, compared to the pre-one and there was a significant difference based on the result of the paired samples t-test. Next, the results of the survey on the affective domains illustrated that participants showed overall improvement in learning interest and confidence and there was a significant difference in these factors. Yet, there was not a significant difference in the learning attitude, even though they showed partial improvement.
