  • A Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) with lethargy, dyspnea, and poor physical condition was rescued and referred to the Animal Health Center, Seoul Zoo, Korea. The jay's eyelids were sealed with dark-colored hard scabs and it died the day after arrival. At necropsy, diphtheritic membranes on the tongue and oral mucosa were apparent, suggesting avian poxvirus infection based on the appearance of the oral diphtheritic lesions. PCR was conducted using a tissue sample to confirm the causative agent. The jay was diagnosed with an avian pox viral infection. This report describes the first case of a natural avian pox infection in a Eurasian jay in Korea.

  • Electrophresis methods were used to examined the degree of genetic relatedness and divergent times on the 4 genera 4 species of the family Corvidae and 1 species of the Family Cinclidae. Genetic relatedness between two families and between 4 genera of Corvidae showed similar to those reported at comparable taxonomic levels in other bird. But it appears to be considerably less than that of non avian taxa. Genetic relatedness between Garrulus glandarius brandtii and Corvus corone orientalis was the most close related(S=0.81), whereas Pica pica sericea(S=0.72) and Cyanopica cyanus koreensis(S=0.68) were showed less close relatedness respectively. The presumed divergent time between two families was 3.9 million years before present. Whereas among the 4 species of corvidae, the presumes divergent times of Cyanopica cyanus koreensis and Pica pica sericea were about 1.9 and 1.6 million years before present respectively, and between Garrulus glandarius brandtii and Corvus corone orientalis was showed recently about 1.0 million years before present

  • This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of attitudinal bird communities in Mt. Seoraksan National Park from May to Oct. 2004. Marsh tit Parus palustris, Arctic warbler Phylloscipus borealis, coal tit Parus ater and Eurasian nuthatch Sitta europaea evenly distributed in almost elevational ranges. Goshawk Accipiter gentilis, black grouse Tetrao tetrix, white-lumped swift Apus pacificus, Siberian rubythroat Luscinia calliope, red-flanked bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus, dusky warbler Phylloscopus fuscatus, yellow-browned warbler Phylloscopus inornatus, siskin Carduelis spinus and rook Corvus frugilegus were only observed in high altitude area. Distribution pattern of birds in Mt. Seoraksan National Park showed differences by elevation. There was difference in attitudinal distribution pattern of birds in Mt. Seoraksan National Park. It seems that habitat preference or selection is different in each species. Attitudinal habitat preference of each bird species need further studies.

  • We estimate carbon embodied in the export goods of Korea. A commodity-by-industry IO model ($CO_2$ hybrid IO model) is constructed for the estimation. In the model, all monetary units of energy commodities are converted to physical unit, carbon tons. Results show that total $CO_2$ embodied in the exports of non-energy goods of Korea equals 51.18 million carbon ton or 44% of total $CO_2$ emissions in Korea in 2000. Overall carbon intensity of export goods is estimated as 0.227 carbon ton per million Won. These findings suggest Korea's responsibility on global warming may be imputed to the countries who import and consume Korean goods. It is in accordance with the user pay principle. It is also argued that if UNFCCC impose the burden of $CO_2$ mitigation on importing countries rather than exporting countries, we can prevent '$CO_2$ emission leakages' effectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the anion-distribution of the famous valleys in Jeollanam-do. Sampling sites were the valley region of Eochi, Surak, Daeheungsa and Namchang. The maximum values of the anion level were 11,190~178,100 ea/mL at each site and the highest value was measured at the Surak. The mean values showed 14,060 ea/mL in Surak, 8,590 in Eochi, 8,420 in Daeheungsa and 7,020 in Namchang. For a day, the highest Concentration showed in the 5:00 a.m to 7:00 a.m and the lowest values showed in the 12:00 p.m to 14:00 p.m. According to the distance from the source, the anion tended to disappear within 7 m in Namchang and Daeheungsa. But, it influenced by 50 m in Eochi and Surak. Correlation coefficient was -0.54 with wind speed, 0.34 with humidity about the formation of anion. There was no significant correlation with wind speed in the island and longevity village where we had studied in 2009 and 2011. But there was similar correlation with humidity in the island region. Therefore, we can say that wellbeing life is walking around the valley early in the morning with no wind.

  • This study was conducted to investigate seasonal avifauna and to suggest a proper way how to manage and protect wild birds in Chirisan National Park. The survey was carried over 3 main trail districts by line transect method to figure out influence factor of inhabitation of wild birds from February to November in 1991. The study results are as follows : The observed birds were belong to 6 orders 24 families 49 species and 981 individuals and Falco tinnunculus(Natural monument No. 323). These birds also classified into 24 species for residents, 12 species for summer visitor. 9 species for winter visitor, 4 species for passage migrant, respectively. The observed average frequeney of birds was 2.09e.a./ha, and main dominant species were Parus varius, Parus major, Emberiza elegans, Garrolus glandarius, Sitta europaea, Hypsipetes amaurotis, Parus palustris in order. Cheoneun-sa trail route showed relatively decreasing trend of wild birds during spring and fall season because of the highest trail use of visitors. Maximum frequency of species and individuals appeared at Hwaum-sa route in spring and at Piagol route in fall. respectively. Those regions well explained the advantageous inhabitation area of birds in both regions. The diversity index of birds in winter showed little difference of similarity index due to balanced use of trails. Seasonal low similarity index in those 3 main trail district indicate a dissimilarity of environmental factors. Trail use restriction as a provision of proper management and protection of wild birds have to be made at Hwaum-sa route where propagation of birds actively occurred in spring and at Piagol route where birds wintering were observed will contribute to enhance species diversity in the future.
