This study explored the relationships between maternal mind-mindedness, parenting stress, parenting behaviors and preschoolers' emotional intelligence. The subjects consisted of 107 preschoolers and their mothers. The result of this study are summarized as follows; First, maternal mind-mindedness had an indirect effect on parenting behaviors through parenting stress. Second, maternal mind-mindedness had a direct impact on emotional intelligence. These results clearly indicate that maternal mind-mindedness plays a crucial role in parenting behaviors and preschoolers' emotional intelligence.
This study investigated the relations among maternal cognition, maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors, and their children's peer competence. The participants were 40 kindergarten children and their mothers. The mothers completed a questionnaire concerning maternal beliefs about children's social skills. Also their supervisory/monitoring behaviors were observed in the context of child-peer interactions. Children's peer competence was measured using a sociometric status measure and a peer acceptance rating scale. Maternal beliefs were related both to the quantity/quality of maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors and to children's peer competence. Maternal supervisory/monitoring behaviors were also related to children's actual peer competence.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of difficult temperament and mothers' reactions to child negative emotion on child emotion regulation strategies. Mothers of 253 preschoolers(Mage=4.04yrs.) responded to questionnaires on child temperament, mothers' reactions to child negative emotion, and child emotion regulation strategy. The results of regression analysis revealed that; 1) child difficult temperament positively predicted child's aggressive or outburst/appealing strategies whereas negatively predicted avoidance/none strategy; 2) child difficult temperament was not the variable predicting positive coping strategy, but mothers' emotion-focused or problem-focused reactions predicted child positive coping strategy whereas punitive or distress reactions predicted either aggressive or avoidance/none strategy; 3) child temperament moderated the link between mothers' reactions to child's negative emotion expression and child emotion regulation strategies. In particular, children with higher difficult temperament showed higher aggressive strategy under mothers' higher distress or punitive reaction and lower emotion focused or problem focused reaction. On the other hand, children with lower difficult temperament only showed avoidance/ none strategy when mothers showed higher minimization or punitive reaction. The results of current study underscore both child temperament, mothers' reactions and their interactions in predicting child emotion regulation strategies.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether children's temperament and maternal control strategies were related to the self-control behaviors of 3-year-old children. The sample was comprised of 50 young children, ranging from 37 to 50 months of age, and their mothers. Mothers were asked to complete a questionnaire on children's temperament. Situational observation was conducted for obtaining data on maternal control strategies and for children's self-control behaviors in a resistance to temptation situation. All the subjects' activities were videotaped for 20 minutes. Differences were found in maternal control strategies and children's self-control behaviors by gender of child and by age and education of mothers. Relationships were found between children's temperament and maternal control strategies. However, children's temperament had an indirect effect on their self-control behaviors through maternal control strategies. The findings indicated that the self-control development of children in this sample were in a transitional stage.
This study analyzed the relation of children's attachment security and mother-child interaction to children's peer interactions. The subjects were 51 preschoolers, 44 to 57 months of age and their mothers. Attachment was assessed using the Attachment Q-set (Waters, 1987), mother-child interactions at home were observed with the use of the Teaching Strategies Rating Scales (Erickson, Sroufe, Egeland, 1985), and peer interactions were observed during free play time, using the Holloway and Erickson(1988) categories. Pearson correlation and multiple regression showed that attachment security scores were negatively related to dependency toward peers. Mother's "structure and limit setting" and "respect for child's autonomy" were positively related to "helping with peers" and negatively to "asking for help" and "physical attack". The variables accounting for dependency toward peers were mother's hostility and attachment security.
The purpose of this study is to examine 4-5 year older's creative thinking and to investigate the interrelationship between young child's creative thinking and their mother's supportive child-rearing behavior. The subjects were 125 pairs of 4-5 year olders and their mothers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The Multidimensional Stimulus Fluency Measure(Van Hook & Tegano, 2002) was revised and used to measure children's creative thinking. For determining mother's supportive child-rearing behavior, the Child Rearing Behavior Observation Scale (Renshaw & Gardner, 1990) was revised and used. The major results were as follows: first, there is no significant difference between boys and girls, and between the 4 year-olders and 5 year-olders in the "child's creative thinking". Second, when mothers properly keep encouraging children's creative behavior in the course of performing their task, it can significantly effect on the development of their creative thinking.
This study examined the relationships among maternal psychological life position, involvement in child-rearing and children's emotional intelligence. The subjects were 267 four and five-year-old children and their mothers from five child care centers located in Seoul. Children's emotional intelligence was assessed by the teacher rating scale developed by Kin(1998) and questionnaires were used to assess the maternal psychological life position and involvement in child-rearing. Data was analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results demonstrated a correlation between the level of the children's emotional intelligence and their gender and age. The strongest predictor of children's emotional intelligence was the child's age.
This study explored the relationships among child temperament, mothering daily hassles, and children's social adjustment in 254 kindergartens and childcare centers. The mothers of the participants completed the measures of child temperament and mothering daily hassles. The social adjustment in daycare was assessed through the rating provided by the children's teachers. Correlations and regressions were used for the analyses. The results showed that sociability, activity and soothability were related to social adjustment that attention-span, soothability, emotionality and activity were related to the mothering daily hassles that mothering daily hassles by children's challenging behavior were negatively related to the social competence and positively internalizing problems and that sociability and activity were useful to predict children's social adjustment in kindergartens and childcare centers.
This study analyzed the relationship between mother-child communication and the self-concept of young children. The subjects were 93 three-, four-, and five-year-old kindergarten children and their mothers in the city of Chunju. The self-concept test, mother-child communication inventory for children and the mother-child communication questionnaire for mothers were used. The data were analyzed by T-test, General Linear Models analysis, Duncan's Multiple Range test, Paired T-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The major findings were that (1) the children perceived mother-child communication more intensively than mothers, (2) the more positive communication the children perceived they had with their mothers, the higher their self-concept, (3) the self-concept of 5-year-olds was more highly correlated with perception about mother-child communication than the self-concept of the younger children, and (4) boys' self-concept was more highly correlated with perceived mother-child communication than girls'.
