  • The purpose of this study was to examine mother's child rearing practices by mothers of their first-born child as a function of child's sex, temperament, and social class and of mother's marital satisfaction. The subjects were 158 mothers of 3-year-old first-born children in Seoul. Block (1984)'s CRPR, Buss and Plomin (1975)'s EAS, and Roach et al.'s MSS (1981) were used to measure maternal child rearing practices, children's temperament, and mother's marital satisfaction, respectively. The statistical methods for data analysis included t-test, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, multiple regression. The major findings showed there were no sex of child differences in child rearing practices. Social class differences were found in "encouragement of independence", "enjoyment of child" and "openness to experience" in maternal child rearing practices. There were differences in maternal child rearing practices by child's temperament and mother's marital satisfaction. In a multiple regression analysis, it was found that the most significant predictor of maternal child rearing practices was mother's marital satisfaction.

Subjects were 1,501 elementary school children in the 4th to the 6th grades in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Andong and their mothers. Major findings were that maternal child rearing behaviors and stress related to parents and home environments influenced children's self esteem only in the NWG; school-related stress was an influential variable on children's self esteem in both the NWG and OG. Peer victimization influenced children's self-esteem in both NWG and OG. Self-perceived obesity influenced some domains of children's self-esteem, especially in girls.

The subjects were 2004-and-5-year-olds, their mothers, and teachers. Children's age, sex, and self-respect had m influence on self-regulation; that is 5-year-olds were higher than 4-year-olds for behavioral self-regulation, girls were higher than boys for cognitive and behavioral self-regulation, and the high self-respect group was higher than the low self-respect group for cognitive self-regulation. The psychological controlling and externally directed strategies had a negative influence on children's self-regulation. Maternal affectionate childrearing behavior had an influence on children's self-regulation; that is the high affectionate group had children with higher self-regulation.

The significant differences in children's social competence were found according to mother's satisfaction with job and preference to job, the degree of father's support, birth order, income level, and father's educational level. 2. The significant differences in mother's child-rearing behavior were found according to mother's preference to job and the motivation of employment, the degree of father's practical support, and parental educational level. 3. • This study examined the role of maternal attribution in Parenting behaviors. Using an attributional model, it assessed whether maternal attributions about children's knowledge, capacity, expectation, and responsibility for behavior problems have effects on maternal behaviors of affect and authoritarian control. The sample consisted of 297 mothers who have first-and forth-grade children. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that matemal attribution about children’s knowledge for misconduct had positive influence on maternal affect and negative influence on authoritarian control behaviors, and that maternal attribution of expectation negatively influenced the behaviors of authoritarian control. In addition, such background factors as child age, gender, family income, family type, maternal education, and self-esteem were significant predictors for maternal attributions. In regard of mothering behaviors, child age, maternal age, and self-esteem were related to maternal affect, while family type and maternal self-esteem were related to authoritarian control. The findings suggest the importance of matemal attributions in parenting for better child development.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the path model of child's sex, temperament, maternal parenting behavior, and child's emotion regulation on child social behaviors. The subjects were 286 elementary school children. Data were gathered through questionnaires reported by mothers and teachers. Path analysis revealed that (1) mother's overprotective or coercive parenting behaviors effected neither child's emotion regulation nor social behaviors (2) child's sex and activity level effected child's aggression both directly and indirectly through child's emotion regulation (3) child's 'activity level' and 'avoidance' temperament effected child's social withdrawal both directly and indirectly through child' emotion regulation. Findings underscore the role of emotion regulation as a mediator in predicting child aggression and social withdrawal.
