  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of podcast-produced reading activity programs on reading attitudes and communication skills of high-grade elementary school students. To that end, 20 fifth and sixth graders applied for a reading culture program conducted at N Public Library located in Seoul, Korea, were assigned as experimental and control groups. The total research period is from 8 October 2018 to 11 February 2019. and the class was conducted once a week for 90 minutes, six times for each group, and a total of 12 sessions. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; First, it was found that the reading activity program produced by podcast had a positive effect in all four areas: value domain, motivation·interest domain, habit·attitude, and expectation domain in the reading attitude of high-grade in elementary school. Second, communication skills were found to have a positive effect in all seven sub-areas, such as information collection and listening, overcoming stereotyped thinking, creative communication, self-disclosure, leading communication, and understanding of others' perspectives. In conclusion, the podcast-produced reading activity program had a positive effect on the reading attitude, communication ability, and media ability of high-grade in elementary school, suggesting that it is effective in applying various educational fields.

  • The major users of children's library are children and housewives. Recent increasing frequency of their visit to the library expands the function of it from the place where they borrow and read books further to the cultural space where each family unit can enjoy leisure activities. Though the children's library basically is a quiet place for reading books, peers' establishing friendship and emotional bond with the parents, and such plays as small scale muscular movements take place in addition to reading activities because the major users are infants under six or children in the lower grades in elementary school. Thus, in order to study the features and requirements that are inherent in the various behaviors of the children who use furniture, understanding of the particular factors in the physical environment of the children's library and the user context must precede. In reality, though the fixed form of the desks and chairs in the library was made by a small number of designers, a large number of children are using them in tremendously various ways beyond the ways that the designers had intended, adapting themselves to the environmental context. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out the children's using way of seats when they do reading and playing activities based on the way of interaction between children and parents, and, after modeling of the children's behavior data, to understand the demands inherent inside the various behaviors of children who use furniture.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of people who have heard of 'reading aloud' on the formation of reading satisfaction and reading attitude, and to obtain implications for the library book reading service. To this end, a survey was conducted on 439 people of various age groups. The results are as follows. First, there was a difference in value perception and satisfaction with reading books by age group, and there was no difference in reading attitude. Second, the satisfaction of the respondents who answered that the value of reading books was efficacy and feeling loved was positive, and the satisfaction of the respondents who answered that they were comfortable was lower than this. Third, the more positive the satisfaction level was, the more positive the reading attitude was. Fourth, respondents who participate in reading groups for children were found to have a high value perception of trust relationships and more experience in reading books, and the more experience they have in reading, the more they are affected by the behavioral aspect of reading attitude. Therefore, librarians (teachers) need to support the improvement of reading attitudes by actively operating reading groups for parents while planning programs that take into account value recognition types and satisfaction by age group.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop frameworks for evaluating reading programs for children provided by a public library. Logic Model based on outcome evaluations was applied for the framework development. While the logic model is generally composed of six factors, the frameworks developed in this study has four factors including input, activity, output, and outcome. Additionally, this study suggests outcome indicators which were driven from library data. Even though the evaluation frameworks were developed from specific programs operated by a public library, those might be able to be used to evaluate other libraries' programs for children since the target programs are commonly provided by public libraries.

During the 1980s, a new wave of specialized book review magazines emerged. 1990s witnessed the proliferation of civic organizations that cater to children's books and promotion of reading. During the first half of 2000's, a number of daily newspapers added book sections and literature journals began actively producing picture book reviews. In the second half of the 2000's, the number of public libraries in Korea increased significantly and librarians have emerged as picture book reviewers.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the spatial characteristics of the children's library and user's behavioral characteristics and to empirically analyze the difference in preference of the spatial characteristics based on the using behaviors. For doing this, this study selected 16 children's libraries in the country as a sampling institute and collected and analyzed 661 questionnaires targeting infants, and the lower and upper graders. The results of analysis are as follows. First, while there was a difference in the relation between the spatial characteristics and the user's characteristics according to ages and sexes, there was no difference in the developing stage. Second, there was a difference in the relation between the spatial characteristics and the using behaviors. Detailed results are as follows. While users who visit the library for reading prefer amenity and peacefulness, those who visit the library for other reasons prefer communication and territoriality. Children prefer diversity, peacefulness and communication when they visit in group rather than to visit individually. In terms of behavioral patterns, users who act quietly prefer diversity than those who act actively. Reading use frequency, as the number of times to visit increased, preference on esthetic sense, dynamics, flexibility, leisure, communication and territoriality increased, but preference on safety decreased. As the length of visit became longer, preference on diversity, self-esteem, peacefulness, dynamics and flexibility increased.

  • Purpose: To investigate the relationship between axial length (AL) and anthropometric parameters in Korean children. Methods: This study included 40 urban school children aged 11-12 years (mean age, $11.95{\pm}0.22$ years; 45.0% girls) residing in Seoul, South Korea. AL (using partial coherence laser interferometry), corneal radius, refractive error, height (m), and weight (kg) were measured. Body mass index (BMI $[kg/m^2]=weight/[height]^2$) and degree of obesity (DO[%]=[actual weight standard weight]/standard weight) were calculated. Furthermore, the number of hours spent reading, watching television, and using a computer every day was determined using a detailed questionnaire. Results: The students had a mean spherical equivalent refraction of $1.06{\pm}0.84$ D. Weight (r=0.427, p=0.006), BMI (r=0.508, p=0.001), and DO (r=0.371, p=0.018) showed a significant positive correlation with AL. Furthermore, longer AL was significantly associated with heavier weight (p=0.041), and higher BMI (p=0.015), and higher DO quartiles (p=0.042). After adjust for age, sex, and near-work activities, multivariate linear regression models showed that weight, BMI, and DO were still significantly associated with AL. Among the near-work activities, daily reading time was significantly associated with AL. Conclusions: AL was positively related to weight as well as daily reading time in Korean urban school children.

  • Sejong City Library information services and programs proposed in this study are proposed by combining cases of local representative libraries and overseas libraries. As a feature of the proposal, first, various information services that can be provided by the Sejong City Library are proposed by area, by user, by data type, by media, by partner institution, etc. Second, by reinforcing user programs for each life cycle, various reading programs by age and interest, such as reading discussion, reading experience, and reading events, are provided. Reinforce user-based programs that reflect the characteristics of Sejong City's population, such as adult, child, and family programs. Third, secure and utilize maker space space. Fourth, the reading program developed by the Sejong City Library is promoted and shared in cooperation with local libraries. Fifth, induce participation of local residents in Sejong City, volunteer activities and talent donation. Sixth, propose library information services using library websites and social media, and develop channels for mutual cooperation with users.
