  • In this study, we analyzed the effects of the presence or absence of weirs on fish assemblages in wadeable streams (Stream order 1st~4th). More specifically, we investigated these effects by evaluating the differences in stream size. The results showed differences in the fish assemblages in third or higher order streams (PERMANOVA, P<0.005). The presence or absence of weirs mainly affected variables such as the number of species the individuals, and species richness index, whereas no difference was observed in the populations of exotic, endemic, and endangered species. A SIMPER analysis showed that the common species Zacco platypus, Zacco koreanus, and Pungtungia herzi are dominant in their corresponding streams (contribution>5%), and that these are the main contributors to differences among the fish assemblages. All these species showed high relative abundances at the sites with weirs. Altered environments by the presence of weirs provided these species with concentrated habitats. In summary, this study analyzed the effects of weirs on fish assemblages on a broad, nationwide, scale, and these results can effectively aid future studies on the specific effects of weirs.

  • A total of 27 fish species were collected by a gill net in Masan Bay. The dominant fish species were Konosirus punctatus, Mugil cephalus, Engraulis japonicus, Psenopsis anomala, Lateolabrax japonicus, Leiognathus nuchalis, Chelon affinis, Trachurus japonicus, and these accounted for 87.6% of the total numbers. The numerically dominant fish species made up 95.4% of biomass. These were primarily juvenile species or early larger species. Temporal variation in both species composition and abundance was large: the peak number of fishes occurred in March 2005 and July 2005, whilst biomass of fishes was the highest in September 2005 and November 2005. Fish numbers as well as biomass was lowest in November 2005. Temporal changes in the abundance of fishes corresponded with temperature. A gill net can be used as an alternative fishing gear to collect pelagic fishes commercially, although a gill net has a strong selectivity for the target fish species or for size.

  • The dynamics of the fish community in the Lake Hoengseong region, Korea, were investigated from April 2000 to November 2004. During the surveyed period 39 species belonging 10 families were collected, and there were 17 Korean endemic species (43.59%) including Rhodeus pseudosericeus. Dominant species were Acheilognathus lanceolatus (20.10%), Zacco platypus (15.94%), Z. temmincki (6.92%), Carassius cuvieri (6.33%), A. rhombeus (6.18%), Pungtungia herzi (5.13%), and Pseudorasbora parva (4.93), In the comparison community of fish according to ecotype by each studied years, benthic fished are gradually decreasing and pelagic fishes creasing. Also, according to the fish distribution, the fish community of each studied years was divided into 3 groups by UPGMA. Being based on the fish community, similarity analysis results of each artificial lakes and this lake were divided 2 groups by water system, and divided again 3 groups in the same water system. Fish Community of the Lake Hoengseong was similar with that of the Lake Chuncheon and Cheongpyeong of the Bukhan-River.

  • Total of 325 estuaries in Korea were surveyed to analyze the effect of presence of sluice gate on the estuary environment and fish community from 2016 to 2018. Fish community in closed and open estuaries showed differences generally, and the relative abundance (RA) of primary freshwater species in the closed and migratory species in the open estuaries were high. The result of classifying species by habitat characteristics in closed and open estuaries showed similar tendencies at the estuaries of south sea and west sea. The relative abundances of primary freshwater species in the closed estuaries at the estuaries of south sea and west sea were the highest, but estuarine and migratory species were high in both closed and open estuaries at the estuaries of east sea. Primary freshwater species showed higher abundances in the closed estuaries with reduced salinity due to blocking of seawater since they are not resistant to salt. However, primary freshwater species in open estuaries at east sea was higher than that of the closed estuaries, which is considered to be the result of reflecting the characteristics (tide, sand bar, etc.) of the east sea. Korea Estuary Fish Assessment Index (KEFAI) was showed to be higher at open estuaries than closed in all sea areas (T-test, P<0.001), the highest KEFAI was observed in closed estuaries at south sea, and open estuaries in east sea. Fish community of closed and open estuaries in each sea areas showed statistically significant differences (PERMANOVA, East, Pseudo-F=3.0198, P=0.002; South, Pseudo-F=22.00, P=0.001; West, Pseudo-F=14.067, P=0.001). Fish assemblage similarity by sea areas showed a significant differences on fish community in closed and open estuaries at east sea, south sea, and west sea (SIMPER, Group dissimilarity, 85.85%, 88.36%, and 88.05%). This study provided information on the characteristics and distribution of fish community according to the types of estuaries. The results of this study can be used as a reference for establishing appropriate management plans according to the sea areas and type in the management and restoration of estuaries for future.

  • Changes of fish assemblage inhabiting around Dae Island in Gwangyang Bay, Korea were investigated using a small beam trawl monthly from March 2009 to February 2010. These data were compared with those obtained in previous studies(1990~1991 and 1995~1996) at our study sites. A total of 8,133 fish belonging to 74 species in 38 families were collected. Leiognathus nuchalis, Argyrosomus argentatus, Acentrogobius pellidebilis, Sillago japonica, Apogon lineatus, Thryssa hamiltoni, Repomucenus richardsonii, Pholis nebulosa, Pleuronichthys cornutus, Hexagrammos otakii, and Limanda yokohamae dominated, and these were responsible for 89.5% and 58.9% in the number of individuals and in biomass, respectively. These were primarily small species or early juveniles of larger species. Seasonal variation in both species composition and abundance was large: the peak number of fish species occurred in May and October 2009, whilst both number of individuals and biomass were the highest in May 2009. Fish numbers as well as biomass was lowest in January and February 2010. Seasonal changes in the abundance of fishes corresponded with temperature. Compared with the previous studies, the total number of individuals and biomass per unit area($m^2$) were higher, and the predominance of L. nuchalis occurred while abundances of Liparis tanakai were significant decreased. These results seemed to be change of species composition in fish assemblage which was due to variation of annual environmental characteristics in Gwangyang Bay.

  • In this study, nine major sites of Yulcheon stream, a principal tributary of the Seomjingang River, were surveyed from April 2020 to October 2020, and their fish fauna and community structure were analyzed. A total of five families and 19 species of fish were identified. Among the 19 species, seven species were found to be endemic to Korea: Rhodeus uyekii, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Odontobutis interrupta, Cobitis tetralineata, Zacco koreanus, and Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae. Among five families, the family Cyprinidae had the largest number of species (15), whereas the rest of the four families: Gobiidae, Odontobutidae, Cobitidae, and Osphronemidae, had one species each. The two dominant species in the family Cyprinidae were identified as Z. platypus and Z. temminckii. The community index of nine major sites of Yulcheon stream was 0.499 dominance, 2.279 diversity, 0.774 evenness, and 2.594 species richness. The number 3 site had 14 species, the largest number of species among all sites, and the dominance rate (0.480) was low, whereas diversity (2.173), and species richness (2.701) were the highest. As a result of cluster analysis, clusters matched according to the structure of the river types, but St. 9, which confirmed a relatively small number of populations, showed a structure similar to that of the upstream section. In the case of St. 5, a separate cluster was formed by a large number of species and populations.

  • Similarity indices between sampling sites are calculated and cluster analysis of fish community is carried out by UPGMA based on investigating fish fauna and water environment. The restoration indicators as target species of Wonju stream are selected Cottus poecilopus, Zacco temmincki, and Zacco platypus along upper, middle, and lower streams, respectively. For better habitat suitability, low flow increasing and induced water quality improving must be secured by sewer system rearrangement and watershed management. Composite habitat suitability of Zacco temmincki as target species at middle stream of Wonju stream improve significantly by low flow increasing, which is very important factor to improve habitat suitability. The changes of hydraulics of depth and velocity govern the habitat suitability in general, but the effects are not significant. Low flow increasing with the change of 10% reducing of lower channel improves the composite habitat suitability of 0.37~0.78 to their origin of 0.1~0.25, which represent the channel restoration scheme of Wonju stream for enhancing the habitat suitability of fish community.

  • In this study, the results of fish assemblage survey for 16 reservoirs in the Yeongsan·Seomjin-River watershed were presented with fish assemblage characteristics analysis in relation to reservoir size. The survey method including number of sampling sites was followed the "Biomonitoring survey and assessment manual" of the Ministry of Environment/National Institute of Environmental Research (MOE/NIER), and the reservoirs were categorized as three size groups, small, medium or large reservoirs, based on the MOE/NIER as well. Total 13 family classified into 44 species were collected from 2018 (7 reservoirs) to 2019 (9 reservoirs), and the dominant and subdominant species were Hemiculter eigenmanni (Relative abundance, RA, 32.9%) and Lepomis macrochirus (RA, 31.4%), respectively. As a result of the analysis in relation to the reservoir size, the average (±standard deviation) number of species of the small, medium and large reservoirs were 11±2.9, 14.3±2.1, 22.7±0.6, respectively, which showed positive correlation with the reservoir size. Total 6 fish assemblage characteristics(number of species, number of individuals, richness index, herbivorous fish ratio, carnivorous fish ratio, exotic fish ratio) showed significant differences between the each reservoir size groups (P<0.05). As a result of cluster analysis, 16 reservoirs were clustered into 5 groups with 60% similarity, and the each reservoirs seems to be clustered depends on the distance from each other, watershed and their historical geology rather than size. These results are baseline information for the understanding of fish assemblage in Korean reservoirs, important for establishing management policy of reservoirs in the Yeongsan·Seomjin-River watershed.
