Comparison of Scapular Stabilizer Muscles Activity among Push-Up, Knee Push-Up and Wall push-Up (푸시업과 무릎 푸시업, 벽 푸시업 운동시 어깨안정근 활성도의 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate difference of activity of scapular stabilizer muscles among push-up, knee push-up and wall push-up exercise. Eight male college students were recruited as participants without any history of shoulder or pathology. The results showed that serratus anterior, anterior deltoid, infraspinatus were higher muscle activities than other scapular stabilizer muscles during push-up exercise and muscle activity of standard push-up exercise was higher muscle activity than that of Knee and Wall push-up exercise. Also, We know that knee push-down exercise was more effective than wall push-down exercise for scapular stabilization.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the shoulder stabilizer muscle activity during a push up plus on a different conditioning surface. Eighteen healthy volunteers were tested. Surface EMG was recorded from the upper trapezius(UT), pectoralis major(PM), and serratus anterior(SA) using surface differential conditions. Measurements were performed for 7 days. The mean root mean square (RMS) of EMG activity was calculated. A one-way repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to compare RMS normalized values. The UT and PM did not show significant differences of electric activation amplitude in relation to different surface conditions(p>.05). However, the SA showed greater mean electric activation amplitude values on the push up plus exercise on a upper and lower unstable surface(p<.05). These results suggest that to improve SA EMG activity is more useful when performed on a upper and lower unstable surface conditions than on a stable surface conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the change to the muscle activity from the serratus anterior(SA) of 5th and 7th, upper trapezius(UT), middle trapezius(MT) lower trapezius (LT), and pectoralis major(PM) when push-up plus exercise(PUP) is performed in four postures. 25 healthy, young participants performed various PUP convergence exercise(general posture, $90^{\circ}$, $120^{\circ}$ and BOSU). The muscle activity of the shoulder stability muscles was measured using a surface EMG analysis system during various PUP convergence exercise. One-way repeated-measure of ANOVA was conducted to comparison the activity of each muscle. There was significant difference in SA7, PM, UT, and MT (p <.05) during various PUP. The muscle activity of SA7 had a significance difference between PUP and $90^{\circ}PUP$ or BOSUPUP respectively (p <.05). The muscle activity of PM had a significance difference between $90^{\circ}PUP$ and PUP or BOSUPUP (p <.05). The muscle activity of UT had a significance differnce between $90^{\circ}PUP$ and PUP or BOSUPUP (p <.05). The muscle activity of MT had a significance differnce between $90^{\circ}PUP$ and PUP and also significantly difference PUP and $120^{\circ}PUP$(p <.05). These results suggest that general PUP can be a useful to improve to scapular stabilizer muscle in who has no shoulder dysfunction.

The Effect of Hand Grip Force on the Activity of Shoulder Muscles in the Patterns of Arm Position (팔자세의 유형에서 손의 쥐기 강도가 어깨근육의 활성도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is intended to provide a basic clinical data useful for preventing shoulder injuries related to occupation and curing them, by measuring the shoulder muscle activity of normal adults in an arm posture type of a wide shoulder joint angle, according to several differences of hand grip force. In order to examine the shoulder muscle activity during hand grips at a variety of intensity, according to the arm posture type, MVCs of all subjects were measured, and %MVCs of anterior deltoid, supraspinatus, the upper trapezius and infraspinatus at 0 degree, 90 degrees and 160 degrees of shoulder angle were yielded according to the grip force in an arm posture type, changing the maximum grip force into 30%, 50% and 90%, randomly. When measuring the hand grip at 30%, 50% and 70% of the maximum grip force to compare %MVC of each group depending on the arm posture type, there were no significant differences of muscle activity at 0 degree of shoulder angle among anterior deltoid, supraspinatus, the upper trapezius and infraspinatus, but there were significant differences of it among them at 90 degrees and 160 degrees of should angle(p<.001). According to the results of post-hoc test, also, anterior deltoid had the highest muscle activity, whereas the upper trapezius had the lowest muscle activity.

The effects trunk correction taping on trunk muscle activity and stability, upper extremity function in stroke patients (몸통교정테이핑 융합치료가 뇌졸중환자의 몸통 근활성도 및 안정성, 팔 기능에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to investigate whether a trunk correction taping plus scapular setting exercises has an effect on trunk muscle activation and trunk balance and upper extremity function in patients with stroke. Twenty stroke patients were randomly divided into a trunk correction taping with scapular setting exercise group (n=10) and a scapular setting exercise group (n=10), and each group performed given interventions for 30 minutes for 4 weeks. In the experimental group, there were significant increases in muscle activation, K-TIS, and MFT (p<.05), and a significant improvement was detected in K-TIS and MFT compared to the control group (p<.05). This study suggests that a trunk correction taping with scapular setting exercises was more effective on trunk muscle activation, trunk balance, and upper extremity function in stroke patients compared to a scapular setting exercise. It could be clinically more significant if the change in the onset time of muscle activity is confirmed in the further researches.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cervical vertebral height and shoulder stabilization on anterior head posture in people with turtle neck. The subjects of this study consisted of normal and healthy people with 30 turtle necks. Subjects were randomly assigned to shoulder stabilization exercise and cervical vertebrae exercise (30 men, 15 men and 15 women, height: $168.67{\pm}6.51$, $22.33{\pm}8.27$, $65.03{\pm}11.98$, and $28.66{\pm}1.91$), In the experimental group, shoulder stabilization exercise and cervical spine exercise were performed for 4 weeks. Deep neck flexor, leavator scapular, upper trapezius, rhomboid, and lower trapezius showed significant differences in shoulder stabilization and cervical vertebrae before and after the experiment. As a result, the CVA value decreased significantly and the muscle activity value increased significantly when exercise and Mckenzie program were applied. These results show that exercise and Mckenzie programs have a positive effect on turtle neck improvement.

The Effects of Hand Grip Force on Shoulder Muscle Activity in Two Arm Posture (파악력의 강도가 두 가지 팔 자세에서 어깨근육 근활성도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of hand grip force on the activity of shoulder muscles in 2 arm postures. The muscle activity of the upper trapezius, lower trapezius, infraspinatus, anterior deltoid, and posterior deltoid muscles in 22 healthy subjects (11 men and 11 women) were measured using surface electrodes during 4 hand gripping tasks (0%, 30%, 50%, and 70% of maximum voluntary contraction) in 2 shoulder positions (neutral position and $90^{\circ}$ elevation position). Among changing grip force significantly differenced infraspinatus, anterior deltoid, and posterior deltoid muscles' activity in the shoulder neutral position(p<0.05). In the shoulder $90^{\circ}$ elevation position, anterior deltoid, posterior deltoid muscles' activity was significantly differenced(p<0.05). Hand gripping was found to alter muscle activation. The hand grip task activated the infraspinatus muscle in the neutral position and inhibited the deltoid muscle in the $90^{\circ}$ elevation position. This finding may prove useful for the development preventative measures and rehabilitation strategies for shoulder injuries.

Intramuscular Activation of Scapular Stabilizing Muscles During Shrug Exercise and PNF Scapular Pattern Exercise (으쓱 운동과 PNF어깨뼈패턴 시 어깨뼈 안정근의 근활성도)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the intramuscular activation of the scapular stabilizing muscles and the upper trapezius/middle serratus anterior (UT/MSA) ratios during shrug exercise and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) scapular pattern exercise. Methods: The participants of this study were 13 young adult men who voluntarily consented to participate in this experiment after listening to its purpose and methods. All participants were instructed on maximal voluntary isometric contraction and scapular exercises. The intramuscular activation of the upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT), middle serratus anterior (MSA), and lower serratus anterior (LSA) muscles while performing scapular exercises in a side-lying position were measured using surface electromyography. To analyze the muscle activation and UT/MSA ratio between the two exercises, a one-way repeated ANOVA was performed. Post-hoc analyses were conducted using Tukey's multiple comparison and analysis. Hamstring flexibility for each group was measured by a passive straight leg raising test. Results: The shrug exercise showed significantly higher UT activation compared to PNF anterior elevation and posterior elevation scapular patterns. The PNF scapular anterior elevation pattern showed significantly higher serratus anterior activation than the shrug exercise. Additionally, the UT/MSA ratios were significantly lower in the PNF scapular anterior elevation pattern than in the two exercises. Conclusion: Although shrug exercise was effective for strengthening UT, the PNF scapular anterior elevation pattern may be effective for strengthening MSA and improving the UT/MSA ratio.

Verification of Suitable Height of Plank Seat for Improving the Health and Safety of Farmers (농작업자의 건강과 안전 향상을 위해 적합한 작업용 좌대 높이의 검증)

  • 최근 들어 산업현장 뿐만 아니라 농어촌에도 자동화가 가속화되면서 작업자의 안정성과 편리성을 높이기 위한 다양한 방안이 제시되고 있지만 여전히 농업현장에서 대부분의 작업들이 부적절한 자세로 수행할 수밖에 없는 경우가 자주 발생한다. 본 연구는 쪼그려 앉는 작업자세가 요구되는 각종 농작업에 있어서 적합한 높이의 작업용 좌대를 제공함으로써 부적절한 작업자세를 개선하여 노동 강도를 경감시킴과 동시에 작업능률 향상과 요통 등 근골격계질환을 감소시켜 작업자의 건강과 안전을 증진시키는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위하여 농작업에서 행해지는 쪼그려 앉는 여러 자세에 있어서 재배작물의 높이에 따라 적절한 작업용 좌대의 높이를 실험을 통하여 규명하였다. 연구결과 쪼그려 앉아 작업을 수행해야 하는 유사한 작업이라도 작업위치에 따라 쪼그려 앉는 작업용 좌대의 적합한 높이는 달라져야 한다는 것을 발견하였다. 즉 작업위치가 5cm 이하이면 작업용 좌대 높이는 10cm가 적절하며 작업위치가 20cm이면 15cm, 작업위치가 40cm이면 20cm가 적절함을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 결과를 농작업에 적용한다면 작업조건이 향상되어 편안하고 안전한 자세로 작업을 할 수 있기 때문에 허리, 어깨, 다리 등의 근골격계 질환을 감소시킬 수 있으며 인력작업에 따른 무리한 힘의 소모를 감소시켜 노동력 절감은 물론 생산성 향상을 가져올 수 있다고 판단된다.
