  • We have quantitatively analyzed 1,294 effective patents on "Quantitative Analysis of Patents Concerning Cathode Active Materials for Lithium-Ion Secondary Batteries Based on Layer Structure" from Korea, USA, Japan, Europe and PCT (WO). The importance of technological and patent values of the aforesaid patents were evaluated by the factors shown in Table 1, and 104 major and 20 core patents were selected in compliance with the evaluation from the patents. The technological flow chart over time regarding the selected major and core patents was prepared, and the applying time and development process of patents, as well as the position of core patents were established on the time scale investigated. Finally, the differentiation plans and patent avoidance strategies for the next technology development, in comparison with the technologies of patents already applied and registered, were suggested.

  • Cycle life test was carried out to evaluate the failure modes of the gel type nth batteries at $C_5$ currents and $100\%$ DOD. When the batteries were charged at constant voltage of 2.40 V and 2.50 Vi respectively, cycle lift was over 1,000 cycles. The batteries lost 426.4 g and 391.2 g of electrolyte far each case after the weight measurement. The battery charged at 2.50 V was shown to have a better cyclic performance than charged at 2.40 V, and the amounts of electrolyte loss was proportional to charge factor. After cycle test, the micro-structure of positive active material was completely changed and the corrosion layer of positive grid was about $50{\mu}m$. Failure mode of the positive plate of the gel type battery was a shedding of the positive active material, and the cause of discharge capacity decrease was found to be a electrolyte loss.

  • In a recycling scheme of spent lithium ion batteries, a co-precipitation process for the re-synthesis of precursor is essential after the leaching of lithium ion battery scraps. In this study, the effect of ammonia as impurity during the co-precipitation process was investigated in order to re-synthesize a precursor of Ni-rich cathode active material $LiNi_{0.6}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.2}O_2$ (NCM 622). As ammonia concentration increases from 1 M (the optimum condition for synthesis of the precursors based on 2 M of metal salt solution) to 4 M, the composition of obtained precursors deviates from the designed composition, most notably for Ni. The Ni co-precipitation efficiency gradually decreases from 100% to 87% when the concentration of ammonia solution increases from 1 M to 4 M. Meanwhile, the morphological properties of the obtained precursors such as sphericity, homogeneity and size distribution of particles were also investigated.

  • To improve the electrochemical performances of the cathode materials, boron-doped $LiNi_{0.90}Co_{0.05}Ti_{0.05}O_2$ were synthesized by using concentration gradient precursor. The characteristics of the prepared cathode materials were analyzed by XRD, SEM, EDS, PSA, ICP-OES and electrical conductivity measurement. The electrochemical performances were investigated by initial charge/discharge capacity, cycle stability, C-rate, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The cathode material with 0.5 mol% boron exhibited a capacity of 187 mAh/g (0.5 C) in a voltage range of 2.7~4.3 V(vs. $Li/Li^+$), and an capacity retention of 94.7% after 50 cycles. In the relatively high voltage range of 2.7~4.5 V(vs. $Li/Li^+$), it showed a high capacity of 200 mAh/g and capacity retention of 80.5% after 50 cycles.

  • $Li_2MnSiO_4$/C was synthesized by solid state reaction and solution synthesis with sucrose for carbon source. The X-ray diffraction patterns of solid state reaction indicates small amount of impurities. By FE-SEM and HR-TEM, solution synthesis comprised several tens of nanometer comparing to 500~600 nm of $Li_2MnSiO_4$/C prepared by solid state reaction. The $Li_2MnSiO_4$/C prepared by solution synthesis show better electrochemical performance than solid state reaction. The first charge-discharge capacity are 236, 189 mAh/g respectively by solution synthesis. But its cycle performance was poor as yet and its capacity retention was 62% after 10 cycles.

  • A hydrometallurgical process to leach cobalt from the waste cathodic active material, $LiCoO_{2}$, and subsequently to separate it by solvent extraction was developed. The optimum leaching conditions for high recovery of colbalt and lithium were obtained: 2.0 M sulfuric acid, 5 $vol.\%$ hydrogen peroxide, $75^{\circ}C$ leaching temperature, 30 minutes leaching time and an initial pulp density of 100 g/L. The respective leaching efficiencies for Co and Li were $93\%$ and $94.5\%$. About $85\%$ Co was extracted from the sulfuric acid leach liquor containing 44.72 g/L Co and 5.43 g/L Li, using 1.5 M Cyanex272 as an extractant at the initial pH 5.0 and in organic to aqueous phase ratio of 1.6:1 under the single stage extraction conditions. The Co in the raraffinate was completely extracted by 0.5 M Na-Cyanex272 at the inital pH 5.0, and an organic to aqueous phase ratio of 1;1. The cobalt sulfate solution of higher than $99.99\%$ purity could be recovered from waste $LiCoO_{2}$, using a series of hydrometallurgical processes: sulfuric acid leaching of waste $LiCoO_{2}$- solvent extraction of Co by Na-Cyanex 271 - scrubbing of Li by sodium carbonate solution - stripping of Co by sulfuric acid solution.

  • Nickel, cobalt and manganese-based(NCM, $Li(Ni_xCo_yMn_z)O_2$) cathode active materials of spent lithium-ion batteries contained valuable metals such as cobalt(15 ~ 20%), nickel(25 ~ 30%), manganese(10 ~ 15%) and lithium(5 ~ 10%). It was investigated the eco-friendly leaching process for the recovery of valuable metal from spent lithium-ion battery NCM cathode active materials by DL-malic acid($C_4H_5O_6$) as an organic leachant in this research. The experiments were carried out to optimize the process parameters for the recovery of cobalt, nickel and lithium by varying the concentration of lixivant, reductant concentration, solid/liquid ratio and temperature. The leaching solution was analyzed using ICP-OES(Inductively Coupled Plasma Optic Emission Spectrometer). Cathode active materials of 5 wt. % were introduced into the leaching solution which was 2 M DL-malic acid in addition of 5 vol. % $H_2O_2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ and it resulted in the recovery of 99.10% cobalt, 99.80% nickel and 99.75% lithium in 120 min. $H_2O_2$ in DL-malic acid solution acts as an effective reducing agents, which enhance the leaching of metals.

  • The electrochemical reaction behavior of nickel electrode of the nickel-cadium battery system in potassium hydroxide solution has been studied by cyclic voltammetry, controlled potential electrolysis and X-ray diffraction method. It has been found that the reaction mechanism of positive nickel electrode for charging was assumed to be proten transfer step with a rate controlling diffusion process and char-ging state of positive electrode was amorphous $\beta$-NiOOH.
