A Study on the LRE Thrust Chamber Regenerative Cooling Design (액체로켓엔진 추력실의 재생냉각 기관 설계)

  • A calculation procedure for designing LRE regenerative cooling system is introduced. In LRE thrust chamber, heat is transfered from the hot gas to the wall by convection and radiation, then conduction through the wall and finally convection to the liquid coolant. A cooling channel is designed on the basis of heat transfer rate calculated by using criterial method and integral method. The result is compared with existing Russian cooling channel design code. Also a design logic and quantitative effect of various parameters were introduced to help better understanding for those who is not familiar to LRE system.

  • The propulsion system of space launch vehicle generates thrust by supplying oxidizer and fuel to combustion chamber. KSLV-II 2nd stage engine, currently under development by KARI, is to use liquid oxygen as a oxidizer and JET-A1 as a fuel. The 2nd stage pump-fed engine is mainly composed of combustion chamber, turbo-pump and engine supply system. To develop liquid propulsion engine, the development of combustion chamber must be preceded. For performance validation of the combustion chamber, the designed and manufactured combustion chamber should be tested in combustion chamber test facility(CCTF). The detailed design for the planned CCTF in Naro Space Center was conducted. The fuel supply system modeling using AMESim was performed based on the results of the detailed design, and the fuel supply characteristics was analyzed in this paper.

  • Up to date, demands for satellite including communication are increasing. Advanced countries on space technology such as America, Russia, Europe, Japan, China and so on already had secured launch vehicle technology which can insert a large class satellite to proper orbit. The introduction of technologies on the large class launch vehicle including propulsion system is difficult due to the utilization possibility for defensive reason. The acquisition of indigenous technical expertise on the design and manufacture of valves is believed to contribute to the successful local development of valves for propulsion systems and to significant improvement of local technical level of valve design and development. This paper introduces current status of valves developed by other countries as well as valves developed in domestic. The Developed technology of valves may underlie the construction of engine control systems required for the reliable operation of the KSLV-II engine system and propulsion system.

Analysis of Liquid-Propellant Rocket Engine(KL-3) Unstable Combustion Characteristics of Vertical Installation (수직장착에서의 액체추진제 로켓엔진(KL-3) 불안정 연소특성에 관한 연구)

  • To perform combined tests with propellant feeding system and engine, which were developed for KSR-III launcher, vertical test stand was organized and a series of hot-fire combustion tests were carried out with engines of several injector faceplate types. In hot-fire tests in vertical installation, combustion instabilities occurred right after ignition with an engine without baffle, and such combustion instabilities did not occur at ignition add during mainstage operation for an engine with STS or composite baffle. 1.regular and temporary pressure pulsations(popping) were detected during steady operation with a baffle engine, however a development to combustion instabilities with resonant mode was highly suppressed by baffle. With a series of tests, it was confirmed that the last developed engine, which has composite baffle, was operated successfully in KSR-III flight propulsion system.

  • 감압비등에 의한 미립화는 더 미세한 직경의 액적을 얻을 수 있고, 분무각이 증가하며, 더 좋은 혼합특성을 갖는 다는 점에서 단순 압력식 미립화와 차이가 난다. 감압비등이란 과열된 액체를 포화 압력 이하의 대기 중으로 분사하여 급격한 비등에 의해 이루어지는 미립화이다. 본 연구는 금속 연료를 이용한 추진기관의 산화제인 물 공급기술에 감압비등과정을 이용한 와류분무를 적용시키기 위해 수행됐다. 분열길이와 같은 거시적 특성은 Charge-Couple Device(CCD) 카메라를 이용해 측정하였고, Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD)와 SMD분포와 같은 미시적 특성은 Global Sizing Velocimetry(GSV) 시스템을 이용해 측정했다. 실험은 압력과 온도, 대류 속도를 변화시키며 진행했다.

  • Recently, due to the enormous cost for sending a satellite into an orbit, small and more reliable satellites have been more demanded. An introduction of new binders(HTPB, GAP) and new oxidizers made great improvements of the large thrust modulation. In order to make cost reduction, one prefers to the low melting temperature thermoplastic propellant reforming the manufacturing process dramatically. Solid propellant rockets have been had a problem of the injection accuracy into orbit, but PBS(Post Boost Stage) using a liquid mono-propellant improves the injection accuracy. This paper also gives the direction of the advanced nozzle materials and the motor case.

Overseas Research Trends of an Electric-Pump Cycle for Application in Upper-Stage Propulsion Systems (상단 추진 시스템에 적용을 위한 전기펌프 사이클의 국외 연구 동향)

  • An electric-pump cycle, which is a propellant supply system for driving pumps of a liquid rocket engine using an electric motor, has the advantages of simple system configuration and easy control of supply flow rate and pressure. This paper investigates and analyzes the overseas research trends of the electric-pump cycle. In addition, the research and development country, performing organization, application, engine thrust, pump pressure increase, motor power, and rotation speed are summarized. Among them, the design variables of the overseas research that applied the upper-stage propulsion system with the thrust range of 0.445~2.2 kN could be used in the study of a similar electric-pump cycle in Korea.
