  • Tunneling-induced displacement in a jointed rock mass is an important factor to control tunnel stability and to secure a demanded space and construction quality. The magnitude of the inducible displacements is significantly affected by an elastic modulus and therefore, in a rock mass where a joint controls tunnel behavior, it is very important to estimate an elastic modulus of jointed rock mass reliably. Elastic modulus of jointed rock mass is affected by many factors such as rock type, joint condition, and loading condition. Nevertheless, most existing studies were focused on rough empirical relationships based on compressive loading conditions, which are different from tunnel excavation loading conditions, without a systematic approach of rock, joint, and loading conditions together. Therefore, this study considered rock and joint conditions systematically to estimate an elastic modulus of jointed rock mass under tunnel excavation loading. The controlled factors considered in this study are rock types and joint conditions (joint shear strength, joint inclination angle, number of joint sets, and joint spacing). Numerical parametric studies have been carried out with a consideration of different rock and joint conditions; the results have been compared with existing empirical relationships; and charts of elastic modulus change of different rock and joint conditions have been provided. The results are expected to have a great practical use for estimating the convergence induced by tunnel excavation in jointed rockmass.

  • This paper describes an experimental study on the seawater resistance of steel fiber reinforced concrete. The test methods adopted for this study are divided into long-term immersion test and acceleration test by wetting and drying. Tests were carried out to evaluate the procedures which were measured for nine months about reduction in dynamic modulus, length change and compressive strength. Resistance indicators are the water-cement ratio, the content of steel fiber, the content of fly ash, the immersion water(artificial seawater or freshwater) and the types of curing. The seawater resistance of the appropriate additions of steel fiber and fly ash have apparently increased.

  • Differently from fly ash, the bottom ash produced from thermoelectric power plant has been treated as an industrial waste matter, and almost reclaimed a tract from the sea. If this waste material is applicable to foam concrete as an aggregate owing to its light-weight, however, it may be worthy of environmental preservation by recycling of waste material as well as reducing self-weight of high-rising structure and horizontal forces and deformations of retaining wall subject to soil pressure. This study has an objective of evaluating the effects of application of bottom ash on the mechanical properties of foam concrete. Thus, the ratio of bottom ash to cement was selected as a variable for experiment and the effect was measured in terms of unit weight of concrete, air content, water-cement ratio and compressive strength. It can be observed from experiments that the application ratios have different effects on the material parameters considered in this experiment, thus major relationships between application ratio and each material parameter were finally introduced. The result of this study can be applied to decide a mix design proportion of foam concrete while bottom ash is used as an aggregate of the concrete.

  • Recently, as large constructions on the coast increase, an application of a surface layer stabilization method which is one of the improvement methods for dredged soft clay has increased. However, there are few studies about this. The purpose of this study is clarifying characteristics of ultra-soft marine clay and hardening agent. Also, it is verifying an optimal mixture ratio of hardening agent through the laboratory tests according to designed experiments and proving by statistical analysis and pilot tests. Laboratory tests were performed with proper hardening agent and test soil in accordance with the design of experiments. Regression equations between hardening agents materials and unconfined compressive strength were derived from the tests. The applicability of regression equations were also verified by pilot tests. From the test results, it was found that hardening agent materials(cement, slag, fly-ash, inorganic salts, arwin, gypsum etc.) have some effect upon compressive strength. The optimal mixture ratio which satisfies the required compressive strength was derived from the statistical analysis. The effect of ground improvement by cements and hardening agents was confirmed through the pilot tests. This study will suggest data for design or construction criteria of stabilization of surface layer on ultra-soft marine clay.

  • The mode II fracture toughness and strength due to shear stress are important parameters in the stability of caprock and injection zone with application to geological sequestration of carbon dioxide. In this research, a short beam compression test has been used to determine the shear strength and the mode II fracture toughness for Coconino sandstone. The average value of the shear strength and mode II fracture toughness are estimated to be 23.53 MPa and 1.58 MPa${\surd}$m respectively. The stress intensity factor is suggested by finite element analysis using the displacement extrapolation method. The effect of biaxial stress and water saturation on the fracture toughness has also been investigated. The fracture toughness increases with confining stresses, but decreases by 11.4% in fully saturated condition.

  • Abrams equation could be effectively applied to predict strength of cement-admixed clay and clay-water content to cement content ratio is a fundamental parameter for governing strength. This paper analyses unconfined compression strength varying with $w_c/C$ and curing time using laboratory test results. An attempt is made to identify strength of composite soil of cement and clay according to variation of Abrams coefficients and curing time. The value B, which was considered to be constant value in past researches, needs to be considered as parameter variable with curing time. From Abrams equation a correlation was formed for unconfined compression strength with mixing conditions by $w_c/C$ and curing time as dependent variable. Regression results in this paper could be used to predict strength of cement-admixed clay at various mixing conditions.

  • Parametric study of beams with reinforced with FRP rebar is conducted in this study. Using ABAQUS program, the finite element analysis model is set and calibrated with the experimental results which have been conducted by the authors. The employed design parameters are reinforcement ratio, elastic modulus of rebar, and concrete strength. The obtained results from FE analysis are investigated in terms of normalized beam stiffness. In particular, the effect of reinforcement ratio on the flexural stiffness is investigated with comparing with the model code specified on ACI 440. From the analysis results, the reinforcement ratio in beam is the first parameter affecting on the beam stiffness. In addition, its effect could be increased with higher concrete strength.

  • A study for the structural strength evaluation on the doubler plate subjected to the biaxial in-plane compression has been performed through the systematic evaluation process. In order to estimate the proper static strength of doubler plate, elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is introduced including the contact effect between main plate and doubler. The characteristics of stiffness and strength variation are discussed based on their results. A1so, in order to compare the doubler structure with the original strength of main plate without doubler, a simple formula for the evaluation of the equivalent flat plate thickness is derived based on the additional series analysis of flat plate structure. Using this derived equation, the thickness change of a equivalent flat plate is analyzed according to the variation of various design parameters of doubler plate and some design guides are suggested in order to maintain the original strength of main plate without doubler reinforcement. Finally, correlation between derived equivalent flat plate formula and the developed buckling strength formulas by author et a1. is discovered and these relations are formulated for the future development of simple strength evaluation formula of doubler plate structure.

  • Finite element analysis was undertaken to investigate the effect of freezing force of water unexpectedly penetrated into inserts used in railway sleeper on pullout capacity of anchor bolts for fixing base-plate onto concrete sleeper. Based on the in-situ investigation and measurement of geometry of railway sleeper and rail-fastener, the railway sleeper was modeled by 3D solid elements. Nonlinear and fracture properties for the finite element model were assumed according to CEB-FIP 1990 model code. And the pullout maximum load of anchor bolt obtained from the model developed was compared with experimental pullout maximum load presented by KRRI for verification of the model. Using this model, the effect of position of anchor bolt, amount of fastening force applied to the anchor bolt, and compressive strength of concrete on pull-out capacity of anchor bolts installed in railway sleeper was investigated. As a result, it is found that concrete railway sleepers could be damaged by the pressure due to freezing of water penetrated into inserts. And the pullout capacity of anchor bolt close to center of railway is slightly greater than that of the others.

  • Supercooled large droplet issues in aircraft icing have been continually reported due to the important safety considerations. In order to simulate the impingement behavior of large droplets, a two-dimensional and compressible Navier-Stokes code was developed to determine the flow field around the test model. Also, the Eulerian-based droplet impingement model including a semi-empirical approach for the droplet-wall interaction process and droplet break-up was developed. In particular, the droplet-wall interactions were considered as numerical boundary conditions for the droplet impingement simulation in the supercooled large droplet conditions. Finally, the present results were compared with the experimental test data and the LEWICE results. The droplet impingement area and maximum collection efficiency values between present results and wind tunnel data were in good agreements. Otherwise, the inclination of collection efficiency of the present result is over-predicted than the wind tunnel data around a lower surface of the NACA 23012 airfoil.
