  • As huge energy transfer systems like a nuclear power plant, steam power plant and petrochemical plant are operated for a long time, mechanical properties are changed by degradation. The life time of the systems can be affected by the mechanical properties. So determination of the integrity of the metallic structure is required either to en4sure that failure will not occur during the service life of the components or to evaluate the lifetime extension of the structure. An automated ball indentation(ABI) method was developed as a non-destructive technique for evaluating the integrity of such metallic components. In this paper, we would like to present the aging evaluation technique by the ABI method. The five classes of the thermally aged CF8M specimens were prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method. After holding 100, 300, 900, 1800 and 3600 hours at 43$0^{\circ}C$, the specimens were cooled down using water to room temperature respectively. The tensile test, hardness test, charpy impact test, ABI test were performed. The results of the fracture test were compared with those of ABI test and the new evaluation technique of the integrity of metallic structures was developed.

  • Metal/Ceramic structures have many attractive properties, with great potential for applications that demand high stiffness, as well as chemical and biological stability, thermal and electrical insulation. They are currently in use for mechanical and thermal protection in cutting tool and engine parts. With all their great advantage, ceramics suffer from one major problem they are brittle, and are especially susceptible to cracking from surface contacts. Delamination at the interfaces with adjacent layers is a particularly disturbing problem, and can cause premature failure of a composite system. so determination of adhesive properties of coating is one of the most important problems for the extension of the use of coated materials. In this work, mechanical characteristics of Interface of ceramic/Metal composites are evaluated by means of hardness test, indentation test apparent interfacial toughness and bonding strength test. The interface indentation test provides a relation between the applied load(P) and the length of the crack(a) created at the interface between the coating and the substrate.

  • Instrumented indentation tests have been used for estimating material properties. In order to analyze deformation characteristics with various factors, the unloading stiffness should be properly determined from the elastic behaviour. In general, the unloading stiffness is obtained from shifted power functions fitting to indentation unloading curves. But, the functions give often a poor representation of actual data. In this study, control conditions for fitting unloading curves by shifted power functions were investigated. The current efforts may provide useful information about unloading process and valid unloading stiffness.

  • MEMS structures Generally have been fabricated using surface-machining, but the interface failure between silicon substrate and evaporated thin film frequently takes place due to difference of linear coefficient of thermal expansion. Therefore this paper studied the effect of the residual stress caused by variable external loads. This study did not analyzed accurate quantity of the residual stress but trend for the effect of residual stress. Several specimens were fabricated using other material(Al, Au and Cu) and thermal load was applied. The residual stress was measured by nano-indentation using AFM. The results showed the existence of the residual stress due to thermal load. The indentation area of the thermal loaded thin film reduced about 3.5% comparing with the virgin thin film caused by residual stress. The finite element analysis results are similar to indentation test.

  • Evaluation of Brinell standard hardness tester was carried out to secure its application as a national standard for Brinell hardness. Accuracies and reliabilities in load application, indenter diameter and indentation measurement were tested through evaluation of these components. The accuracies of load application for various loading conditions were within the limit of ISO and KS specifications. Errors in the indentation measurement due to the difference in personnel characters were successfully removed by utilising automatic indentation measurement system. In overall, the tester and the indentation measuring system were found to be eligible as a national standard of Brinell hardness.

  • Recently the quality improvement of the steel cord product is demanded by the tire market. After wire drawing process, produced residual stresses have a harmful effect on the durability of the wire and become the cause which decreases the quality of the product. Therefore, to improve the quality of the steel cord product, the research regarding the method of residual stress relaxation is necessary. To evaluate the quality of the drawn wire, it is important to measure the residual stress, because the residual stress decides a variety of the quality level which is demanded in the drawn wire. This study proposed a residual stress relaxation method in the drawn wire using FE analysis. The validity of the analysis results was verified by nanoindentation test.

  • Biaxial flexure strength (ball-on-3-ball) and fracture toughness (indentation microfracture) of heat-pressable glass-ceramics for dental use were investigated in this study. Crystal phase and microstructure of glass-ceramics were analyzed by XRD. SEM, and TEM. Crack propagation in specimens was not effectively arrested by dispersed crystalline particles. However, higher degree of crystallization probably contributes to strengthening of glass-ceramics. Better clinical reliability can be expected from lithium disilicate glass-ceramic because of its significantly higher biaxial flexure strength and fracture toughness.

  • To assure safe usage of railway rolling stock, it is important to evaluate the strength of the wheel which is core part in bogies. However, conventional standard testing methods using destructive technique could not evaluate mechanical properties of degraded wheels during rolling stock maintenance work. Instrumented indentation test is a new way to evaluate nondestructively the strength of mechanical components by analyzing indentation load-depth curves. In this study, to evaluate tensile strength of the wheel, instrumented indentation test is performed nondestructively according to KS B 0950. Furthermore, test results are examined by tensile test in accordance with KS R 9221.

  • Instrumented indentation tests have been used for estimating material properties. In order to analyze deformation characteristics with various factors, the unloading stiffness should be properly determined from the elastic behavior. The unloading stiffness is generally obtained from the shifted power functions fitting with the experimental unloading data. However, the functions often give rise to a poor representation of actual data, and also the unloading stiffness is governed by unloading condition. In this study, both numerical and experimental conditions to obtain proper unloading stiffness were investigated. The result showed that the amount of unloading ratio and hold time played an important role in fitting the unloading curves. The current efforts can successfully provide the unloading stiffness for indentation material properties.
