  • In this study, a new simple method for the estimation of hyperelastic material properties by indentation tests is proposed. Among hyperelastic material models, the Yeoh model with three material properties ($C_{10}$, $C_{20}$, $C_{30}$) is adopted to describe the strain energy density in terms of strain invariants. Finite element simulations of the spherical indentation of hyperelastic materials of the Yeoh model with different material properties are performed to establish a database of indentation force-displacement curves. The indentation force-displacement curves are fitted by cubic polynomials, which are approximated as a product of third-order polynomials of ($C_{10}$, $C_{20}$, $C_{30}$). A regression analysis is conducted to determine the coefficients of the equations for the indentation force-displacement curve approximations. A regression equation is used to estimate the hyperelastic material properties. The present method is verified by comparing the estimated material properties with true values.

  • This study evaluates the magnitudes and distributions of contact tangential forces with the swaging depth of punch acting at the contact surfaces between a rotor core slot and a Cu bar during a sequential rotor core swaging process. The effects of the core slot shape on the magnitudes and distributions of the total contact forces were investigated to improve the productivity of the rotor core swaging process. Parametric elastic-plastic numerical analyses were performed using simplified two-dimensional cyclic symmetric plane strain models to evaluate the contact force distributions at the contact surfaces. The numerical analysis results show that the total contact tangential forces increased by about 55% with the adjacent Cu bar swaging process. The length of the core slot is a dominant factor in the core slot design as result of the increased total contact tangential forces during the swaging process of the rotor core.

  • A method to measure the interfacial toughness of film/substrate by nanoindenter is proposed. As the thickness of the film decreases, the measurement of the interfacial toughness requires the more sophisticated equipment such as nanoindenter. In this study, the nanoindenter is applied to the substrate near the interface of film/substrate in the direction perpendicular to the normal of the interface, causing the cohesive fracture of the substrate, followed by the interfacial cracking. The specimen of Cu($0.56 {\mu}m$)/Si(530 ${\mu}$) are made by sputtering the copper onto the silicon wafer. By scratching the copper surface, we can make the easy interfacial cracking during the nanoindentation. It is found that the averaged values of the interfacial toughness of the Cu/Si is $0.664{\pm}0.3\;J/m^2$ . The phase angle of the specimen in this study is ${\psi}{\simeq}-36.8^{\circ}$, computed by the method of Suo and Hutchinson.[1]

  • This paper discusses two different techniques used to measure the mechanical properties of thin films: the bulge test and the nanoindentation test. In the bulge test, a uniform pressure is applied to one side of the film. Measurement of the membrane deflection as a function of the applied pressure allows one to determine the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, and the residual stress. A nanoindentation test is performed by pushing an indenter tip into the specimen and then withdrawing it, and then recording the indentation force as a function of the indenter position. A modified King's model is used to estimate the mechanical properties of the thin film in order to avoid the effects of the substrate layers. A combination of both the bulge test and the nanoindentation test can determine both Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio simultaneously.

  • Instrumented indentation technique is a new way to evaluate nondestructive such mechanical properties as flow properties, residual stress and fracture toughness by analyzing indentation load-depth curves. This study evaluated quantitatively the flow properties of steels and residual stress of weldments. First, flow properties can be evaluated by defining a representative stress and strain from analysis of deformation behavior beneath the rigid spherical indenter and the parameters obtained from instrumented indentation tests. For estimating residual stress, the deviatoric-stress part of the residual stress affects the indentation load-depth curve, so that by analyzing the difference between the residual-stress-induced indentation curve and residual-stress-free curve, the quantitative residual stress of the target region can be evaluated. The algorithm for flow property evaluation was verified by comparison with uniaxial tensile test and the residual stress evaluation model was compared to mechanical cutting and ED-XRD results.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate the material properties of high-yield strength materials exceeding 10GPa from spherical indentation. Using a regression equation considering four indentation variables, we map the load displacement relation into a stress-strain relation. To calculate the properties of high-strength materials, we then write a program that produces material properties using the loading / unloading data from the indentation test. The errors in material properties computed by the program are within 0.3, 0.8, and 6.4 for the elastic modulus, yield strength, and hardening coefficient, respectively.

  • An indentation method to determine equi-biaxial residual stress is proposed by examining the data from the incremental plasticity theory based finite element analyses. We first select optimal normalized-parameters, which are minimally affected by indentation depth and material properties. Numerical linear regressions of obtained data exhibit that maximum load and contact area of imprint are the main parameters measuring the residual stress. The proposed indentation approach provides a substantial enhancement in accuracy compared with the prior methods.
