  • In this study, we perform the design of dome geometry for the composite pressure vessel with applying the equation of Fulton and Vasiliev considering external load(thrusts). Variables of the dome geometry are opening radius ratio(${\rho}_0$) from 0.1 to 0.5 and thrust level from 40kN to 200kN. We conduct Finite Element Analysis(FEA) by using ABAQUS. As a result, the strain of the composite pressure vessel has shown strain gradient from inner to outer of dome surface. And the strain gradient may cause crack of resin inside the composite laminate. Strain gradient of Fulton dome is monotonously decreased as the ${\rho}_0$ increases, but the strain gradient of Vasiliev dome bas shown some different trend. when ${\rho}_0{\leq}0.1$, strain gradient of Fulton's is higher than Vasiliev's. But when 0.1<${\rho}_0$<0.35, strain gradient of Vasiliev's becomes higher than Fulton's. And in the case of $0.35{\leq}{\rho}_0$, strain gradient of Vasiliev's is higher than Fulton's. So the Vasiliev dome is more effective in ${\rho}_0{\leq}0.1$ condition and Fulton dome is more effective in $0.35{\leq}{\rho}_0$ condition. So, it's important for dome design to consider the crack of resin cause of the strain gradient.

  • The composite material has the advantage that the fibers can be arranged in a desired direction and can be manufactured in one piece. However, micro voids can be formed due to micro air, moisture or improper curing temperature or pressure, which may cause the deterioration in mechanical strength. In this paper, the composite panels with different thicknesses were made by varying the curing pressure in an autoclave vacuum bag process and their microporosities were evaluated. Microporosity was measured by image analysis method, acid digestion method, and combustion method and their correlation with ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was analyzed. From the test results, it was found that the acid digestion method had the highest accuracy and the lower the curing pressure, the higher the microporosity and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient. In addition, the microporosity and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient were increased as the thickness of the composite panel was increased at the same curing pressure.

  • Multi-anvil press (MAP) is one of the high pressure apparatuses and often generates the pressure-conditions ranging from 5 to 25 GPa and temperature-conditions up to $2,300^{\circ}C$. The MAP is, therefore, suitable to explore the pressure-induced structural changes in diverse earth materials from Earth's mantle and the bottom of the mantle transition zone (~660 km). In this study, we present the experimental results for pressure-load calibration of the 1,100-ton multi-anvil press equipped in the authors' laboratory. The pressure-load calibration experiments were performed for the 14/8 step, 14/8 G2, 14/8 HT, and 18/12 assembly sets. The high pressure experiments using ${\alpha}$-quartz, wollastonitestructure of $CaGeO_3$, and forsterite as starting materials were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The phase transition of each mineral indicates the specific pressure that is loaded to a sample at $1,200^{\circ}C$: a transition of ${\alpha}$-quartz to coesite at 3.1 GPa, that of garnet-structure of $CaGeO_3$ to perovskite-structure at 5.9 GPa, that of coesite to stishovite at 9.2 GPa, and that of forsterite to wadsleyite at 13.6 GPa. While the estimated pressure-load calibration curve is generally consistent with those obtained in other laboratories, the deviation up to 50 tons is observed at high pressure above 10 GPa. This is partly because of the loss of oil pressure at high pressure resulting from the differences in a sample chamber, and the frictional force between pressure medium and second anvil. We also report the ${\sim}200^{\circ}C/mm$ of thermal gradient in the vertical direction of the sample chamber of 14/8 HT assembly. The pressure-load calibration curve and the observed thermal gradient within the sample chamber can be applied to explain the structural changes and the relevant macroscopic properties of diverse crystalline and amorphous earth materials in the mantle.

  • Combustion characteristics of full-scale gas generators were studied experimentally by changing the injector number installed at the injector head. Three full-scale gas generators were utilized; they have same total mass flow rate but mass flow rates per injector are different. Thirteen, nineteen and thirty seven injectors, which have internal-mixing and double-swirl characteristics, are distributed in injector heads, respectively. The results showed that pressure fluctuations in the gas generators with 13 and 19 injectors didn't occur around longitudinal resonant frequency, however longitudinal-mode pressure fluctuation appeared slightly in the gas generator with 37 injectors. As the number of injectors increased, deviations of temperature distribution in the combustion chamber decreased gradually, but the damage of injector LOx posts became a little severe.

  • This paper presents the strength safety of a hydrogen gas composite fuel tank, which is analyzed using a FEM based on the criterion of US DOT-CFFC and Korean Standard. A hydrogen gas composite tank in which is fabricated by an aluminum liner of 6061-T6 material and carbon fiber wound composite layers of T800-24K is charged with a filling pressure of 70MPa and a gas storage capacity of 130 liter. The FEM results indicated that von Mises stress, 255.2MPa of an aluminum liner inner tank is low compared with that of 95% yield strength, 272MPa. And a carbon fiber stress ratio of a composite fuel tank is 3.11 in hoop direction and 3.04 in helical direction. These data indicate that a carbon fiber gas tank is safe in comparison to that of a recommended criterion of 2.4 stress ratio. Thus, the proposed composite tank with 130 liter capacity and 70MPa filling pressure is usable in strength safety.

  • Pipelines subjected to ground movement would be easily exposed to large-scale deformation. Since such deformations may cause the pipeline failure, it is important to ensure the safety of pipelines in various operation conditions. However, crack in weld metal have been considered as one of the main causes that can deteriorate the structural integrity of the pipeline. For this reason, the structural integrity of the pipe containing the crack in the weld should be obtained. In order to assess cracked pipe, J-integral and crack-tip opening displacement(CTOD) have been applied widely as the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics parameters representing crack driving force. In this study, engineering solutions to calculate the J-integral and CTOD of pipes with a circumferential outer surface crack in the weld are proposed. For this purpose, 3-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element(FE) analyses have been performed considering the effect of overmatch and width of weld. The shape of the weld was simplified to I-groove, and axial displacement was employed as for loading condition. Based on FE results, the effects of crack size, material properties and width of weldment on J-integral and CTOD were investigated. Additionally, the J-integral and CTOD for I-groove were compared with those for V-groove to examine the effects of the weld shape, and a proportionality coefficient of J-integral and CTOD was calculated from the results of this paper.

  • This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a helical flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one is rotating. The pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of Non-Newtonian fluid, aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC) and bentonite with inner cylinder rotational speed of 0~400 prm. Also, the visualization of helical flows has been performed to observe the unstable waves. The results of present study reveal the relation of the Reynolds number Re and Rossby number Ro with respect to the skin friction coefficients. In somehow, they show the existence of flow instability mechanism. The pressure losses increase as the rotational speed increases, but the gradient of pressure losses decreases as the Reynolds number increases in the regime of transition and turbulence. And the increase of flow disturbance by Taylor vortex in a concentric annulus with rotating inner cylinder results in the decrease of the critical Reynolds number with the increase of skin friction coefficient.

  • Regenerative cooling passage to guarantee the thermal survivability in high performance rocket engine combustors could have complex configurations of the branching/merging of channels and flow turning, etc. By applying the classical hydraulic coefficients which can be found in the literature according to the flow conditions, hydraulic characteristics in regenerative cooling passages can be obtained effectively through dividing the pressure loss into friction loss and local resistance loss. Satisfactory agreement has been obtained by comparing the present results with experimental measurement of water flow test. In addition, the present results were in good agreement with CFD results when the actual coolant, kerosene was used. Therefore, the application of the present method is expected to be useful to design regeneratively cooled combustors.

  • Based on Trifuilac's empirical model to transform earthquake acceleration time history in the time domain into Fourier amplitude spectrum in the frequency domail an earthquake scaling technique for simulating the earthquake record of certain magnitude as the required magnitude earthquake was suggested. Also, using the earthquake record of magni dude(M) 5.8, the simulated earthquake of magnitude(M) 8.0 was established and its application to dynamic testing system was proposed. The earthquake scaling technique could be considered by several terms : earthquake magnitude(M), earthquake intensity(MMI), epicentral distance, recording site conditions, component direction and confidence level required by the analysis. Albo, it had an application to the various earthquake records. The simulated earthquake in this study was established by two orthogonal horizontal components of earthquake acceleration-time history. The simulated earthquake shaking could be applied to the dynamic pile load test for the model tension pile and the model compressive open -ended piles driven into the pressure chamber. In the static pile load test, behavior of two piles was very different and after model tension pile experienced 2 or 3 successive slips of the pile relative to the soil, it was failed completely. During the simulated earthquake shaking, dynamic behavior and pile capacity degradation of two piles were very different.

  • Simulation of local external forcing and its response in the rotation table experiment has been investigated. Spatially-uniform external forcings have been applied in many experimental studies, however, based on the fact that the north-south distribution of the wind-stress curl and the existence of local maximum of the sea surface heat loss in the northern part of the East Sea, new method of combined effects of local forcings has been employed in separate experiments. Carefully designed local source or sink at the bottom of the cylindrical container can produce horizontal pressure gradient within the Ekman layer, and consequently the interior also attains the same pressure gradient that produces geostrophic interior circulation. In order to keep free surface during the local-surface cooling, a side-wall cooling method is suggested. For the various type of local forcing including the effects local cooling and the periodic change of local wind-stress curl, western-boundary flow in terms of its strength, position of separation from the boundary have been observed.
