A Study on Crushing Characteristic of Hatted Section Tube (모자형 단면부재의 압괴특성 연구)

  • In the frontal collision of cars, front parts of cars such as engine rail and side members that are composed of hatted section tubes should absorb most of the collision energy far the passenger compartment not to be deformed. For these reasons the study on the collapse characteristics, maximum crushing load and energy absorption capacity of hatted section tubes are needed. In this study, top hatted section tubes and double hatted section tubes are investigated. The maximum crushing load of hatted section tubes is induced from plastic buckling stress of plates by considering that the hatted section tubes are composed of plates with each different boundary conditions and that its material has a strain hardening effect. On this concept maximum crushing load equations of hatted section tubes are derived and verified by experiments. from the results of experiment, the differences of collapse characteristics between top hatted section tube and double hatted section tube are analysed. And mean crushing loads of hatted section tubes from experiments are compared with other theory.

  • The present paper deals with the crushing characteristics of double hatted-section tube used in body structure of passenger car. Being crushed, a double hatted-section tube shows symmetric or antisymmetric buckling mode according to section aspect ratio and flange size. Zone of buckling mode is shown by numerical methods. It is supposed that crippling behavior of double hatted-section tube corresponds with rectangular tube without flange. Crippling plate coefficient is also calculated when section aspect ratio of tube is higher than one.

  • This paper experimentally investigates the characteristics of Al-honeycomb sandwich panels which are considered as a promising primary strength member of weight critical large structures. Some tests on the aluminum honeycomb panels subject to 3-point bending or uniaxial compression or crushing load are carried out. Based on the test results, linear elastic response, buckling/ultimate strength and crushing/energy absorption capacity are discussed. Some guidelines for design of aluminum honeycomb panels are given.

  • A study on the structural dissipation energy and crushing strong is presented for the axially compressed straight square box column and off-axially compressed tapered box column. A new formula on the energy dissipation and crushing strength of the tapered box column is proposed, where the tapered box column is replaced by the equivalent straight square box column. It is seen that the theoretical solutions agree well with experimental results.

Study on Axial Crushing Behaviors of UD Kevlar/Epoxy with Different Trigger Models (트리거 모델에 따른 일방향 케블라/에폭시 복합재 튜브의 축방향 압괴 거동 연구)

  • In this paper, in order to develop a realistic trigger model for a unidirectional Kevlar/Epoxy tube, the numerical model has been established and then verified by comparison with the experimental result. To achieve this goal, four different trigger models were candidated and evaluated using the commercial explicit FE code LS-DYNA. In the finite element analysis, the 2D shell element and Chang-Chang failure criterion was used. Mechanical material properties for the model were obtained by material testing in advance. The numerical results were compared with quasi-static test results under axial compressive loading at 10mm/min. The load-crushed displacement curves were very close to the experiments and SEA (specific energy absorption) showed a good agreement with experimental one within less than 5%.

  • In this paper, a numerical model for a Kevlar/Epoxy and Carbon-Kevlar/Epoxy tube used as an energy absorbing component has been developed and then results have been verified through experiment.   • In the present study, the deformation capacity of slender shear walls with thin web subject to inelastic deformation after flexural yielding was studied. Web-crushing and rebar-fracture were considered as the governing failure mechanisms of walls. To address the effect of the longitudinal elongation on web-crushing and rebar-fracture, the longitudinal elongation was predicted by using truss model analysis. The failure criteria by web-crushing and rebar-fracture were defined as a function of the longitudinal elongation. The proposed method was applied to 17 shear wall specimens with boundary columns, and the prediction results were compared with the test results. The results showed that proposed method predicted the maximum deformations and failure modes of the wall specimens with reasonable precision.

  • With the increasing demand for lightweight materials to reduce fuel consumption, especially in the transportation industry, magnesium alloys are being widely studied. However, there are several limitations to the large-scale application of magnesium alloys in a structure because of their low formability and strong anisotropy. In order to take into account both the strong anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry of AZ31 sheet alloy, the Cazacu-Plunkett-Barlat yield criterion (Cazacu, 2006) was adopted in material modeling. The variation of the anisotropic coefficients that describe the yield surface evolution of AZ31 is optimized using an interpolation function based on specific calibration results. It generates continuous yield surfaces, which makes it possible to describe different hardening rates in tension and compression as well as the tension-compression asymmetry of magnesium alloys. The performance of the CPB06 yield criterion for simulating an axial crushing test was tested and compared with that of the Hill (1948) yield criterion.

  • Prediction of energy absorption for bow structure is important for a design of protective structures against collision. For the crushing behaviour of basic element of energy absorption, the plastic mechanism method is applied. The ship's crushing strength of bow section is obtained by summing the energy dissipated in all individual elements. The theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results for ship's bow models published with experimental results for ship's bow models published in the references, and it is observed that the present prediction method of crushing strength correlates well with the experimental results.

  • In this paper, the crush characteristic of the tilting train express M-car was estimated under a head-on collision scenario. The car body was divided into three parts - front, middle, and rear. For each part, crush-force relation was evaluated numerically using LS-DYNA 3-diementional shell element analysis. This result will be used for one-dimensional collision analysis of the full train rake.
