  • Tunneling-induced displacement in a jointed rock mass is an important factor to control tunnel stability and to secure a demanded space and construction quality. The magnitude of the inducible displacements is significantly affected by an elastic modulus and therefore, in a rock mass where a joint controls tunnel behavior, it is very important to estimate an elastic modulus of jointed rock mass reliably. Elastic modulus of jointed rock mass is affected by many factors such as rock type, joint condition, and loading condition. Nevertheless, most existing studies were focused on rough empirical relationships based on compressive loading conditions, which are different from tunnel excavation loading conditions, without a systematic approach of rock, joint, and loading conditions together. Therefore, this study considered rock and joint conditions systematically to estimate an elastic modulus of jointed rock mass under tunnel excavation loading. The controlled factors considered in this study are rock types and joint conditions (joint shear strength, joint inclination angle, number of joint sets, and joint spacing). Numerical parametric studies have been carried out with a consideration of different rock and joint conditions; the results have been compared with existing empirical relationships; and charts of elastic modulus change of different rock and joint conditions have been provided. The results are expected to have a great practical use for estimating the convergence induced by tunnel excavation in jointed rockmass.

  • Rockmass properties have great influence on blasting performance so that it cannot be overemphasized to analyze rockmass properties and to perform blast design based on them. Up to the present, however blast design is performed either considering only uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock or using RMR classification as a blast ability classification scheme. In this paper Ashby's approach is adopted to evaluate blast index. In addition. rockmass classification for the blast design based on joint survey results and pattern design procedure are added to Ashby's original approach. With this extended approach, blastability can be classified considering joint properties and objectiveness of evaluated blast index can be confirmed. This approach is anticipated to enhance the tunnel blast design by considering joint properties and classifying the rockmass for blast design.

  • This research is intended to investigate the behavior of the jointed rock under various loading conditions: static or dynamic load. The distributed state concept (DSC) is based on the idea that the response of the joint can be related to and expressed as the response of the reference states : relative intact (RI) and fully adjusted (FA) states. In the DSC, an initially RI joint modifies continuously through a process of natural self-adjustment, and a part of it approaches the FA state at randomly disturbed locations in the joint areas. In this study, based on the DSC concept, RI state, FA state, and disturbance function (D) are defined for characterizing the behavior of rock joint. From the results of this research, it can be stated that DSC model is capable of capturing the physical behavior of jointed rock such as softening and hardening and considering the size of joint and roughness of joint surface.

  • Elastic modulus in rockmass is an important factor to represent the characteristic of rock deformation and is frequently used to estimate the displacement induced due to tunnel excavation or other activities in rockmass. Nevertheless, the study to estimate the elastic modulus, which considers the rock type and joint characteristics (joint shear strength and joint inclination angle), has been done in less frequency. Accordingly, this study is aimed at estimating of elastic modulus in jointed rockmass. For this purpose, numerical parametric studies have been carried out with a consideration of rock and joint conditions. Tunnel displacement results have been used to estimate the elastic modulus of jointed rockmass using the elastic theory of circular tunnel. From this study, the results would be expected to have a great practical use for estimating the displacement induced due to tunnel excavation or other activities in jointed rockmass.

  • This technical report is to introduce the research on SRM (Synthetic Rock Mass) which was presented in 2007 ISRM Congress at Lisbon by Prof, Fairhurst who speak with emphasis on its importance and potential in rock engineering. The Synthetic Rock Mass approach to jointed rock mass characterization (Pierce et al. 2007) is reviewed relative to existing empirical approaches and current understanding of jointed rock mass behaviour. The review illustrates how the key factors affecting the mechanical behaviour of jointed rock masses may be considered and demonstrates that the SRM approach constitutes a significant step forward in this field. This technique, based on two well-established methods, Bonded Particle Modelling in PFC-3D (Potyondy and Cundall, 2004) and Discrete Fracture Network simulation, employs a new sliding joint model that allows for large rock volumes containing thousands of pre-existing joints to be subjected to any non-trivial stress path. Output from SRM testing includes rock mass brittleness and strength, evolution of the full compliance matrix and primary fragmentation.

  • The geological characteristics of Korea are that we can encounter the rock layer only after 10m of excavation, methods to presume the rock pressure distribution of the rock layer is urgently needed. When using the existing empiric science of Terzaghi-Peck, Tschebotarioff to measure the rock pressure of the rock layer, underestimate the real strength because of the cohesion is ignored. Therefore calculating the horizontal sliding force of wedge block, which includes the dips and shear strength of discontinuities and surcharge load etc., think to be to getting a closer rock stress of the real rock pressure acting upon the earth structure in rock mass. This research use Coulomb soil pressure theory assuming that the backfill soil will yield wedge failure when it has cohesion, applying Prakash-Saran(l963), and then it uses equilibrium of force and shear strength $\tau$=c+$\sigma$tan $\Phi$ of the cliscontinuities. Analyzing shear strength and dips of cliscontinuities using calculated theory according to the status of discontinuities aperture, we were able to find out that because the cohesion and friction angle of the rock layer itself is large enough, how the dip directions and dips facing the excavation face is the only factor deciding whether or not the rock stress is applied. The evaluated theory of this research should be strictly estimated, so that the many parameters such as c, $\Phi$value, types and structures of rock class, excessive lateral pressure, dynamic load, earthquake, needed later when calculating shear strength of discontinuities and especially the ground water effect acting on rock layer should be coumpted with many measuring data achieve at the insite to study the application.

  • The investigation on the rock discontinuity geometry has been usually undergone by direct measurement on the rock exposures. But this sort of field work has disadvantages, which we, for example, restriction of surveying areas and consuming excessive times and labors. To cover these kinds of disadvantages, image processing could be regarded as an altemative way, with additional advantages such as automatic and objective tools when used under adequate computerized algorithm. This study was focused on the recognition of the rock discontinuities captured in the image of rock exposure by digital camera and the production of the discontinuity map automatically. The whole process was written using macro commands builtin image analyzer, ImagePro Plus. ver 4.1(Media Cybernetic). The procedure of image processing developed in this research could be divided with three steps, which are enhancement, recognition and extraction of discontinuity traces from the digital image. Enhancement contains combining and applying several filters to remove and relieve various types of noises from the image of rock surface. For the next step, recognition of discontinuity traces was executed. It used local topographic features characterized by the differences of gray scales between discontinuity and rock. Such segments of discontinuity traces extracted from the image were reformulated using an algorithm of computer decision-making criteria and linked to form complete discontinuity traces. To verify the image processing algorithms and their sequences developed in this research, discontinuity traces digitally photographed on the rock slope were analyzed. The result showed about 75~80% of discontinuities could be detected. It is thought to be necessary that the algorithms and computer codes developed in this research need to be advanced further especially in combining digital filters to produce images to be more acceptable for extraction of discontinuity traces and setting seed pixels automatically when linking trace segments to make a complete discontinuity trace.
