  • The characteristics of heat conduction for the heat source boundary like an arch shape cavern are different from those for the semi-infinite or circular boundary which can be driven theoretically. A new form of transient heat conduction equation in rock mass around the arch shape cavern is evaluated with analyzing the pattern of the rock temperature distribution measured at the cold storage pilot plant. The new equation, which is driven by adopting a shape function, $SF=\sqrt{logx_0/log(x_0+x)}$ to the solution for a semi-infinite boundary, has the semi-radial form of temperature variation with distance. And, thermal properties of rock mass are estimated by comparing the rock temperature distributions by this equation with those by measurement. Thermal conductivity and specific heat of rock mass are estimated as giving the difference of 20~25% compared to those of laboratory scale. This difference seems to be caused by discontinuity like joint and water content in rock mass.

  • The propagation of blast vibration and the damping characteristics depend on both the mechanical properties of rock mass and weight charge. In this study, the characteristics of propagation and damping were analyzed by FLAC. The construction site was the second Kwang-ju circulating read. Taguchi method which is one of experimental design methods was used for determination of input data and parameter levels. The results showed that rock density was the most dominant of variables being concerned in this study, which affect the propagation of blast vibration.

  • This paper describes the implementation of rock mass rating evaluation based on genetic algorithm(GA) and conditional simulation technique to estimate RMR in the area without sufficient borehole data RMR were estimated by GA and conditional simulation technique with reflecting distribution feature and spatial correlation. And RMR determined by GA were compared with the results from kriging. Through the analysis of the results from 30 simulations, the uncertainty of estimation could be quantified.

  • The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the rock mass conditions with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. Therefore, a database which includes 13 load tests performed on cast-in-place concrete piles and soil investigation data at the field test sites was made first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. Pressuremeter modulus and limit pressure, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.7 in most cases. In addition, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.

  • A new accelerated neural network adopting modified sigmoid function was developed and applied to estimate engineering properties of rock from insufficient geological data. Developed network was tested on the well-known XOR and character recognition problems to verify the validity of the algorithms. Both learning speed and recognition rate were improved. Test learn on the Lee and Sterling's problems showed that learning time was reduced from tens of hours to a few minutes, while the output pattern was almost the same as other studies. Application to the various case studies showed exact coincidence with original data or measured results.

  • The deformation modulus of rock masses is a very important design factor for the computation of stability of tunnels and their support systems. Several empirical formulas to estimate the deformation modulus using simple rock classification methods such as RQD or RMR are widely used because field tests to evaluate the deformation modulus are very expensive and time consuming work. However, these formulas can be depended on experiences from the characteristics of local sites in each country. So it is possible that there might be limitations to estimate appropriate deformation modulus in South Korea using the empirical formulas. Therefore, in this study, the applicability of empirical formulas was analyzed by comparing estimated value with the measured value from eight sites in South Korea. The results show that the estimated value based on the empirical formulas partially have tendency to overestimate. Especially, in case of sedimentary rocks, it was too difficult to apply to the empirical formulas because there was no relation ship between estimated value and measured value. For these reasons, additional data from many tests and accurate analyses are necessary to evaluate the estimation method for the deformation modulus considering the local characteristics of rock masses.

  • In this research, the effect of rock mass weathering on the side shear resistance of drilled shaft socketed into igneous-metamorphic rock was investigated. For that, 23 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters varying from 400mm to 1,500mm were constructed at four different sites, and the static axial load tests were performed to examine the resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program at the field test site was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. The side shear resistance of rock socketed piles was found to have no intimate correlation with the compressive strength of the intact rock. However, the global rock mass strength, which was calculated by the Hoek and Brown criteria, was found to closely correlate to the side shear resistance. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. $E_m$, $E_{ur}$, $p_{lm}$, RMR, RQD, j) were also found to be highly correlated with the side shear resistance, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.75 in most cases. Additionally, the applicability of existing methods for the side shear resistance of weathered granite-gneiss was verified by comparison with the field test data. The existing methods which consider the effect of rock mass condition were modified and/or extended for weathered rock mass where mass factor j is lower than 0.15, and RQD is below 50%.

  • Electrical resistivity is one of physical property of the earth and measured by electrical resistivity survey, electrical resistivity logging and laboratory test. Recently, electrical resistivity is widely used in determination of rock quality in support pattern design of road and railway tunnel construction sites. To get more reliable rock quality data from electrical resistivity, it needs a lot of test and study on correlation of resistivity and rock quality. Firstly, we did rock property test in laboratory, such as P wave velocity, Young's modulus, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and electrical resistivity. We correlate each test results and we found out that electrical resistivity has highly related to P wave velocity, Young's modulus and UCS. Next, we accomplished electrical resistivity survey in field site and carried out electrical resistivity logging at in-situ area. We also performed rock classification, such as RQD, RMR and Q-system and we correlate electrical resistivity to RMR data. We found out that electrical resistivity logging data are highly correlate to RMR. Also we found out that electrical resistivity survey data are lower than electrical resistivity logging data when there are faults or fractures. And it cause electrical resistivity survey data to lowly correlate to RMR.
