A numerical model which simulates the heat and mass transfer processes within a counter-current plate type generator for ammonia/water absorption refrigerators was developed. Ammonia/water solution flows downward under gravity and ammonia/water vapor generated by flow boiling flows upward. The flow pattern within the generator was assumed to be a bubbly flow, and the liquid and vapor phase were assumed to be saturated. It was shown that the boiling of ammonia occurred mainly in the upper part of the generator. The effects of the generator length, the wall temperature and the mass flow rate of ammonia/water solution into the generator on the generation of ammonia/water vapor were investigated.

Recently, the technologies to utilize the cold energy of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have attracted significant attention. In this paper, thermodynamic performance analysis of combined cycles consisting of ammonia Rankine cycle (AWR) and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with LNG Rankine cycle to recover low-grade heat source and the cold energy of LNG. The mathematical models are developed and the effects of the important system parameters such as turbine inlet pressure, ammonia mass fraction, working fluid on the system performance are systematically investigated. The results show that the thermal efficiency of AWR-LNG cycle is higher but the total power production of ORC-LNG cycle is higher.
A bench type ammonia-water absorber heat exchange cycle was tested by varying the system charging concentration, refrigerating valve opening and weak solution flow rate. It was observed that the cooling capacity was increased as the system charging concentration was increased. Optimum system charging concentration was found for the coolong capacity of the system. The opening rate of refrigerant expansion valve had a direct influence on the refrigerant sub-cooling at the condenser outlet. Optimum sub-cooling was found to be 0~4$^{\circ}C$. As the weak solution flow rate increased the concentration of strong solution and the evaporating pressure decreased. There existed a optimum weak solution flow rate which maximized the cooling capacity and COP.
Tantalum carbide crystallites which is to be used for $H_2$ fuel cell has been synthesized via a temperature-programmed reduction of $Ta_2O_5$ with pure $CH_4$. The resultant Ta carbide crystallites prepared using two different heating rates and space velocity exhibit the different surface areas. The $O_2$ uptake has a linear relation with surface area, corresponding to an oxygen capacity of $1.36{\times}10^{13}\;O\;cm^{-2}$. Tantalum carbide crystallites are very active for hydrogen production form ammonia decomposition reaction. Tantalum carbides are as much as two orders of magnitude more active than Pt/C catalyst (Engelhard). The highest activity has been observed at a ratio of $C_1/Ta^{{\delta}+}=0.85$, suggesting the presence of electron transfer between metals and carbon in metal carbides.

A numerical model which simulates the flow boiling process of the ammonia/water solution within a plate type generator for ammonia/water absorption refrigerators was developed. The ammonia/water solution flows downward under gravity and the ammonia/water vapor generated by flow boiling flows upward. The heating medium flows counter to the ammonia/water solution. The flow pattern within the generator was assumed to be a bubbly flow, and the liquid and vapor phases were assumed to be saturated. It was shown that the boiling of ammonia occurred mainly in the upper part of the generator. The effects of the heating medium inlet temperature, the mass flow rate of the heating medium and the mass flow rate of ammonia/water solution into the generator on the generation of ammonia/water vapor were investigated.

A dynamic model which simulates the coupled heat and mass transfer within a vertical tube absorber was developed. The liquid film is a binary mixture of two components, and both of these components are present in the vapor phase. The pressure, concentration, temperature and mass flow rate of the vapor are obtained by assuming that the pressure is uniform within an absorber. The model was applied to an absorber for an ammonia/water absorption refrigerator. The transient behaviors of the pressure, the outlet temperature and the concentration of the solution and the cooling water outlet temperature on a step change at the absorber inlet of the cooling water temperature, the vapor mass flow rate and the concentration of the solution were shown.

An air-cooled ammonia/water GAX(Generator-Absorber heat eXchange) absorption cooling cycle is proposed and its performance is numerically evaluated. It is shown that the performance of the system is greatly dependent on the quality of the refrigerant leaving the evaporator. For any refrigerant concentration in the investigated range(99.1~99.9% ammonia), the cycle COP(coefficient of performance) reaches the highest value, when some amount(about 7%) of refrigerant evaporates in the refrigerant heat exchanger. Among temperature differences in various heat exchangers, the temperature difference between GAX-absorber and the GAX-generator shows the greatest effect on the system performance, whereas pressure losses cause no significant decrease in COP. The system COP increases almost linearly with increasing evaporator temperature, decreasing absorber temperature or decreasing condenser temperature. If both absorber and condenser temperature increase simultaneously, the decrease in the COP becomes larger.

The power cycle using ammonia-water mixture as a working fluid is a possible way to improve efficiency of the system of low-temperature source. In this work thermodynamic performance of the ammonia-water regenerative Rankine cycle with partial-boiling flow is analyzed for purpose of extracting maximum power from the source. Effects of the system parameters such as mass fraction of ammonia, turbine inlet pressure or ratio of partial-boiling flow on the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that the power output increases with the mass fraction of ammonia but has a maximum value with respect to the turbine inlet pressure, and is able to reach 22 kW per unit mass flow rate of source air at $180^{\circ}C$.
