  • This study was conducted in a commercial plug glasshouse in Sacheon to examine the possibility of producing tomato plug seedlings using various growing media containing cellular glass foam (CGF)and carbonized chestnut woodchips (CCW) as medium components. Plug seedlings of 'Seogun' tomato were grown in media containing 50% CCW+50% peatmoss, 33% CGF+67% peatmoss, and 50% peatmoss+50% granular rockwool. A commercial plug medium (Tosilee) was used as the control. All seeds were sown in 200 cell plug trays on November 28, 2001. Seedling growth was measured at 31 days after sowing. Each treatment showed a similar growth result as compared to the control. Plant height, root grade, fresh weight, and air space and bulk density of the medium were significantly greater in the 33% CGF+67% peatmoss treatment than those in the other media. However, growth was slightly suppressed in the 50% CCW+50% peatmoss. pH and EC of the media were the highest in the control treatment, although no toxicity symptoms had been observed. The results suggest that perlite can be replaced with a new material such as CGF in the commercial scale production of plug seedlings of 'Seogun' tomato.

  • To overcome a decrease of Korean ginseng production caused by successive cropping, we have tried to develop a nutrient culture system for Korean ginseng production. For determining the optimal substrate, mixture of sand and TKS-2 (S+T), peatmoss (P), reused rockwool (RR), and granular rockwool (GR) were investigated. The overall physico-chemical properties of RR fell into the reported optimal range for the ginseng cultivation. However, bulk density of S+T was a little higher than that of soil in Korean ginseng fields. The top fresh weight of the ginseng was high in RR and S+T substrates. The root fresh and dry weights in the RR were remarkably greater than that in the conventional soil (CS) of Korean ginseng fields. In terms of ginseng quality, the vitamin C content of ginseng root in nutrient culture was higher than that in CS. However, the contents of crude saponin and total ginsenosides in ginseng between in the nutrient culture and in the soil culture did not show any significant differences.

  • This study was conducted to examine the germination and growth during seedling period of Codonopsis lanceolata and Astragalus membranaceus as affected by different media. The seeds were sown in commercial medium (Tosilee), coir, rockwool, and urethane sponge. The seeds were germinated for 22 days in a closed-type plant production system, and seedlings were grown for 35 days after sowing in the venlo-type glasshouse located on Gyeongsang National University. Nutrient solution was supplied by the sub-irrigation as EC $1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and pH 6.5 every second day. Final germination of Codonopsis lanceolata was the significantly highest in the coir and rockwool media as 68.5% and 67.9%, respectively. Mean daily germination was also the highest in the coir and rockwool media as 4.2 and 4.1, respectively. The germination rate of Astragalus membranaceus was not significantly difference in the media types. Plant height and leaf area of Codonopsis lanceolata were the significantly highest in the rockwool medium as 11.5 cm and $11.3cm^2$, respectively. Longest root length and fresh weight of root were the greatest in the coir medium as 5.8 cm and 0.07 g, respectively. Plant height and leaf area of Astragalus membranaceus were the significantly highest in the coir medium as 14.0 cm and $16.9cm^2$, respectively, and fresh and dry weights of root were the highest in the urethane sponge medium as 0.34 g and 0.03 g, respectively. Therefore, these result suggest that the rockwool and coir media were suitable for the germination and growth during seedling period of Codonopsis lanceolata and Astraglus membranaceus.

  • Root zone environments in hydroponics are very important factors in crop growth, development and quality. In Korea, improvement of root zone temperature is required because of the continental climate. Therefore, this investigation was carried out to clarify the difference of root zone environments in different hydroponic systems under different climates. Tomato plants were grown in nutrient solutions at Seoul City University and Allen Cooper's. Hydroponic systems in this experiment were aeroponics, nutrient film technique(NFT), rockwool culture, sand culture and smoked rice hull culture(SRH). The decrease in temperature rapidly occured in sand culture while slowly in rockwool culture in low air temperature periods. The internal temperature of substrates of hydroponic bed were slightly changed in rockwool culture under high air temperature periods, while the duration of high temperature was longest in NFT. Electrical conductivity and pH of nutrient solution showed great changes in rockwool and aeroponics. Along the bed, the content of dissolved oxygen in nutrient solution had a tendency to decrease in NFT and DFT(Deep flow technique), while didn`t a change with aeroponics. Root activity measured by triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) was highest with aeroponics, followed by rockwool culture and NFT.

  • This research compared growth and flowering of potted $Viola{\times}wittrockiana$ 'Majestic GT Scarlet Shadow' in various mixtures of recycled perlite and cellular glass foam (CGF). The crop was cultured in a mat subirrigation system. Numbers of leaves, opened flowers, flower buds, and branches, fresh and dry weights of shoot, leaf area, and total chlorophyll concentration were the greatest in plants grown in the medium of used perlite + granular rockwool+ peatmoss (25:50:25, v/v/v). Plant height and length of the longest root were the highest and longest, respectively, in plants grown in the medium of CGF+peatmoss (25:75, v/v). The medium of CGF+peatmoss (25:75, v/v) was better than the medium of used perlite+peatmoss (25:75, v/v) in plant growth. The medium of CGF + granular rockwool (25:75, v/v) was poorer than the medium of recycled perlite + granular rockwool (25:75, v/v).

  • This study was conducted to investigate the seedling qualities and growth of paprika according to various irrigation points (IPs) (30, 40, 50, 60 or 70%) compared to the weight of rockwool cube with 100% water content for raising seedlings of paprika. Growth degree of paprika seedlings was positively correlate with various irrigation points. In particular, paprika seedlings with IP 30-40% and IP 50-70% treatments were significantly higher than those with other treatments. Leaf area of seedlings was 50-100% wider in those with IP 50% and IP 40% treatments than those with other treatments, therefore dry weight was heavier in IP 30-60% treatments. The dry weight of more than IP 50% treatments had no significant differences. Leaf area (Y1) had a significant relation with the irrigation point (x) as Y1 = 48.311x + 133.7 (R2 = 0.9116⁎⁎). Also dry weight (Y2) of the seedlings showed a linear regression equation as Y2 = 0.1584x + 0.8616 (R2 = 0.8853). Considering the leaf area and the dry weight of irrigation points for rising seedlings of paprika in this study, the optimum range of the irrigation points in the water contents of rockwool cube is IP 50%.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effects of germination condition, nursery media and nutrient concentration in plant factory on the growth characteristics of pak-choi and lettuce seedlings. The results showed that temperature (15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$) and light conditions (lighting and no lighting) had no significant effect on germination rate of pak-choi and lettuce, whereas the interaction of growing media (rockwool and urethane sponge) and moisture management before and after sowing had significant effect on germination percentage. In case of no moisture management before and after sowing, germination percentage was much higher in rockwool medium than urethane sponge medium. But germination percentage of urethane sponge was higher than that of rockwool with applying moisture before and after sowing. At the nutrient concentration of EC $1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ the fresh weight of pak-choi was heavier than in EC 1.5 and $0.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ by 1.8 and 6.0 times, respectively. At the nutrient concentration of EC $1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ the fresh weight of lettuce was also heavier than in EC 1.5 and $0.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ by 1.7 and 3.5 times, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of transplanting methods on the growth and yield of paprika (Capsicumannuum L. 'Veyron' and 'Coletti') in coir culture during two seasons. The summer type sowed in late winter and harvested from summer and the winter type sowed in summer and harvested from early winter. Control plants grown on the 10cm rockwool block were transplanted on coir slab when the 8 leaves of seedlings were emerged, while plants of the young seedling transplanting(YST) grown on the 7cm rockwool block was put on the slab at time of 2-3 leaves developed. Plants of the temporary transplanting(TT) on the 10cm rockwool block were moved on the slab after 2-3 weeks underpinning cultivation, while plants of the blockless transplanting(BT) were directly transplanted in the slab when the seedlings have 2-3 leaves emerged. The plant height of the control and BT treatment were longer while that of TT showed the shortest among treatments. The bigger leaf size was observed in the YST and BT treatment. Leaf number of the BT treatment was increased, while that of TT was the lowest. There were no differences in fruit size, locules and thickness among treatments. The lower fruit weight was observed in the TT of the winter culture and fruits in the control and YST of the summer culture showed higher fruit weight. The percentage of marketable fruit appeared to be slightly higher in the winter culture than in the summer culture. There were no differences in marketable fruit rate among the treatments of the winter culture but, among the summer culture, the highest marketable fruit rate was observed in the BT with 93%. The yield of the YST and BT was higher and that of the TT was the lowest.
