  • To ensure the structural integrity of membrane type LNG tank, the rational assessment of impact pressure and structural responses due to sloshing should be preceded. The sloshing impact pressures acting on the insulation system of LNG tank are typical irregular loads and the structural responses caused by them also very complex behaviors including fluid structure interaction. So it is not easy to estimate them accurately and huge time consuming process would be necessary. In this research, a simplified method to analyze the dynamic structural responses of LNG tank insulation system under pressure time histories obtained by sloshing model test or numerical analysis was proposed. This technique basically based on the concept of linear combination of the triangular response functions which are obtained by the transient response analysis under the unit triangular impact pressure acting on structures in time domain. The validity of suggested method was verified through the example calculations and applied to the structural analysis of real Mark III type insulation system using the sloshing impact pressure time histories obtained by model test.

  • The SRT(stability rating test) technique, which is indispensable for the development of a LRE(liquid rocket engine), essentially requires a development of a combustion test sequence as well as artificial perturbation devices. For the development of an indigenous SRT technique, several combustion tests of sub-scale LRE were performed to search a proper combustion test sequence. At first, a pressure-wave inducing device which is used for adapting pulse gun was designed and a cooling gas supply system for the pressure-wave inducing device was set up to prevent a malfunction of pulse gun. Through the several combustion tests which included cooling procedure of a pressure-wave inducing device, a proper combustion test sequence was found out. It did not make any significant disturbance at normal combustion process. Finally, an indigenous SRT technique has been developed successfully.

  • A LNG safety valve functions to control a constant pressure inside the LNG line of transportation, and the flow through it accompanies with noise and vibration which affect adversely on the system. The present study aims at understanding the flow physics of LNG safety valve for a practical design of LNG safety valve. A computational work using the two-dimensional, axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations is carried out to simulate the gas flow through the LNG safety valve, and compared with the theoretical results. It is found that the shape of valve sheet and the gap size are the key parameters in determining the gas dynamic forces on the valve sheet, and there exists a distance between nozzle exit and valve sheet in which the thrust coefficient at the valve sheet increases abruptly.

  • In order to introduce the hydrogen economy and increase supply, research in the field of hydrogen production is being actively conducted. Among the hydrogen production methods, the method of steam reforming from natural gas and producing it currently accounts for about 50% of the global hydrogen production. In the method of steam reforming process, hydrogen can be produced by adding a reformer to an existing natural gas supply pipe. Because of these advantages, it is evaluated as a realistic production method at present in Korea, where the city gas supply chain is well established. But there is concern in that it is highly likely to be installed in downtown areas and residential spaces. In this study, the risk of the process of steam reforming to produce hydrogen was reviewed.

The Study of Bulk Emulsion Blends Consisting of Emulsion and ANFO (벌크 에멀젼 블랜드 폭약의 특성 고찰)

  • 국내에서는 Heavy ANFO로 더 잘 알려져 있는 Emulsion Blends는 왁스 대신 오일을 사용 하여 상온에서 펌핑이 가능하도록 한 에멀젼과 ANFO(또는 초안)의 혼합물을 일컫는다. ANFO는 저렴하고 안전하며 장약이 쉽고 밀장전되는 장점이 있지만, 내수성이 거의 없고 폭발 속도가 느리며 장약 비중이 0.75∼0.90g/cc 정도로 낮아 폭약으로서 그 위력이 작은 단점을 갖고 있다. Blends는 수용성 ANFO 입자 사이의 빈 공간을 내수성 에멀젼이 태우고 있는 형태로서 에멀젼 함량 25%부터 내수성이 나타나기 시작하여 에멀젼 함량 40% 이상에서는 완전한 내수성을 갖게 되며, 에멀젼의 함량이 증가할수록 폭발속도는 카트리지 에멀젼 폭약에 근접하게 된다. 장약 비중은 에멀젼의 함량이 증가하여 45% 근처에서 1.25∼ 1.30g/cc의 최대 값을 갖지만, 그 이상의 에멀젼 함량에서는 기폭 감도 저하로 예감제를 사용하여 비중을 감소시키는 것이 바람직하다. Blends는 자체에 물을 함유하고 있으므로 열역학적으로 계산된 단위 중량당 반응열은 ANFO에 비해 매우 적지만, 폭발속도, detonation pressure(폭굉압), borehole pressure(폭발압력) 등이 ANFO에 비해 크므로 폭발압력에서부터 암석의 파괴가 가능한 압력가지의 단위 중량당 유효한 에너지의 양은 암석의 강도가 커질수록 ANFO에 비해 매우 적지만, 폭발속도, ANFO와 비슷해진다. 따라서 장약 비중이 ANFO의 130∼145%로 높은 Blends는 동일한 천공에 더 많이 장약할 수 있어 단위 천공당 암석 파괴에 이용되는 유효 에너지의 총 양이 커지게 되므로, 공간격과 저항선을 늘릴 수 있어 총 천공수를 감소시킬 수 있다. 결론적으로, Blends의 장점은 내수성과 함께 비장약량은 비슷하거나 약간 증가하는데 비해, 천공수는 크게 감소하여 전체적으로는 발파 현장의 경제성이 향상된다는데 있다.

  • Some gate valves are susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding which prevent the safety function. The safety related gate valves susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding shall be identified and taken preventive actions to ensure the safety function. The identification of the gate valves susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding needs the evaluation of system design, valve and piping arrangement, test requirements, and operating conditions. Application of preventive methods should consider the system safety function, applicability, effectiveness, interface with system design, and cost. The selection procedure of valves susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding can be effectively used in industry including nuclear power plants. In order to prevent the pressure locking, the hole can be drilled through the one disc of upstream side or down stream and the external equalizing line can be installed from bonnet to downstream or upstream. The double disc parallel seat valve type can be used instead of flexible wedge gate valve to prevent the thermal binding. The identification of gate valves susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding, and preventive actions will meet the regulatory requirements and enhance the availability and safety of plants.

  • The use of special gas masks such as PAPR is strongly required for the safe and efficient work of fire-fighters in removing fire residue and rescue activity. Special gas masks commonly use canisters with carbon activated particles. This paper analyzed the pressure distribution, velocity distribution and pressure loss characteristics in canisters using CFD simulation, and showed pressure drops are affected by inlet air velocity, canister geometry and increase dramatically especially with the decrease of particle diameters and volume fractions.

  • The flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) is one of significant aging and degradation mechanism and can affect structural integrity of CANDU feeder pipes. Pipe burst can occur under normal operation pressure (min. 10 MPa) if wall-thinning of the feeder pipe due to FAC is accumulated. Previous studies considered simple shapes of feeder pipe with local wall-thinning in order to conservatively assess structural integrity of wall-thinned feeder pipe. In this paper, a new FE model is developed, having an actual shape of the feeder pipe (double bent) as well as the actual wall-thinning shape and location based on the in-service inspection result. Then, the burst pressure assessment of the wall-thinned feeder pipe is performed using lower bound limit load analysis considering elastic-perfectly plastic material. In addition, an improved formulation to predict the burst pressure of the wall-thinned feeder pipe is presented and the safety margin is compared with an existing assessment method.

  • In this study, designing of a Type 4 pressure vessel using the filament winding method was conducted. In order to prevent leakage in consideration of the design of the hydrogen storage tank, a liner was designed by applying high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and the composite structure was designed by stacking carbon/epoxy in the hoop and helical directions. As a theoretical approach, the angle of the helical fiber and fiber thickness of each hoop and helix were designed. The safety of the design was verified using the commercial software ANSYS.

  • LBB 설계법은 오늘날 같이 플랜트의 대형화 및 복잡화함에 따라서, 균열이 발생하였다고 하여도 기기의 점검시 발견하지 못하는 수가 있을 것이다. 이러한 경우에 있어서 LBB 설계법은 fail safe design으로서 만일의 손상이 발생하더라도 플랜트의 안전성 및 경제성 확보를 위하여 매우 중요한 설계법이다. 이 LBB 설계법은 위에서도 설명하였듯이 선진제국에서는 상당히 연구가 진전되어 있으나, 우리나라에서는 이 분야에 연구가 전혀 없는 실정이다. 특히 에너지자원이 부족한 우리나라로서는 LNG, LPG 가스의 수입에 있어서, 이러한 저온가스를 운반할 tanker의 개발에 있어서도 LBB의 확보가 중요한 것이다. 또한 발전에너지원을 석유에만 의존하는 현재의 추세에서, 우라늄 등에 의한 원자력발전으로 대체되어 가고 있는 현재 전 발전능력의 약 50%를 의존하고 있는 실정이다. 이러한 면에서 실제의 구조물이 일시에 파단이 일어나지 않고, 파단 신뢰성이 충분히 높다는 것을 실증하여 둔다는 것은 안전성평가상 지극히 중요한 것이다.
