  • This study aims at calculating berth length required of the given volume of containers. For this, unlike previous studies assuming 300,000 TEU per berth as the capacity of a berth, this study attempts to apply more realistic situation such as the distribution of vessel size, lifts per vessel, berth time by vessel size, and average berth occupancy ratio. the result are compared with that of Pusan New port planning.

  • This paper aims at measuring the changes of Malmquist productivity and technical efficiency of Korean shipbuilding Industry and examinig their determinants utilizing the panel analysis. The increase of the technological progress was greater than technical efficiency, resulting in the increase of the total factor productivity for the period of 2004-2010. This study also employs the panel technique to analyse the effects of Employee, Dock, and Length on the changes of Malmquist productivity and technical efficiency. The dependent variables are obtained from three combinations, which are (Employee, Dock, and CGT), (Employee, Length, and CGT), and (Dock, and Length, and CGT). The empirical results show that all of the explanatory variables have a positive effect on the change of Malmquist productivity and technical efficiency.

  • In this study, the effect of caisson heel on the active earth pressure is investigated. Using limit analysis method, inclinations of slip surface developed above the heel with different lengths are analyzed. The shorter the heel length, the larger those of inside slip surface, however those of outside slip surface are not changed. According to the relative heel length, relationships of internal friction angle of backfill material - wall friction angle between caisson structure and backfill - friction angle acting on virtual section at the end of heel are presented. Earth pressures acting against caisson structure with relatively short heel are smaller than Rankine earth pressure but always greater than Coulomb earth pressure which does not consider the heel length.

  • This Paper aims to develop container terminal simulation models for medium and long term decision makings. It first undertakes in-depth survey of literature. finds its shortcomings and suggests some directions for improvement. It then proposes detailed design for the simulation models. Based on this it finally developes several simulation models and applies them to a hypothetical situation of a container terminal development. The results reveal that basic design questions such as length of quay, number of quay crane, size of storage area are well produced through the models.

  • This paper presents the quasi-static mooring analysis model for a vessel moored at the quay. The results of this analysis will aid the designer in determining the mooring configuration for the surface vessels subjected to wind, current and wave forces. And it will also help him in selecting the equipment for the fixed mooring system. The cumulative elastic behavior of the mooring lines invokes a complicated nonlinear problem since the mooring lines are relatively short and hang in air as noncoplanar configurations. This nonlinear mooring problem is solved in this paper by the load increment technique in which the external load is increased step by step taking all sources of nonlinearity into account.

  • Offshore wind power is a representative renewable energy source and a rapidly growing industry. In Gyeongsangnam-do, offshore wind farms of 461.9MW are being pushed for in the Yokji island and are expected to expand further to over 1GW in the future. Accordingly, ports supporting the storage, assembly, transportation, and installation of offshore wind power equipment are expected to play an important role in the smooth progress of the offshore wind farm development project. Based on previous research and cases in major countries, this study prepared criteria for assessment of ports supporting offshore wind farmsand evaluated ports in Gyeongsangnam-do, which are linked to Yokji island offshore wind farms. The assessment criteria have been subdivided into distance from the offshore wind farm, port entry and exit restrictions, navigational areas, fishery rights factors, additional costs, berth length, depth of berth, size of the port yard, port berth bearing pressure, interference with other cargo, a civil appeal, and relevant industrial aggregation. The ports of Tongyeong, Samcheonpo, Kohyun, Masan, and Jinhae in Gyeongsangnam-do were selected and evaluated. As a result, the port of Tongyoung was superior in terms of distance from the Yokji island offshore wind farm. The ports of Samcheonpo, Masan, and Jinhae were evaluated as excellent in other criteria such as berth length, depth of berth, and so on. This study is expected to be used as a source of basic data for offshore wind power companies and policymakers to select and evaluate the supporting ports of offshore wind farms.

  • In order to investigate the hydrodynamic interaction between the tug-barge and bank or ship which is crossing to the opposite direction, the towing simulations of tug-barge transportation were performed. Heading of barge, yaw moment and lateral force of tug boat were obtained by this simulation. The characteristics of results were analyzed and the safety towing method for tug-barge operation was proposed. In order to reduce the slewing motion of barge for safe towing operation, the speed of tug boat should be kept slow ahead state with shortened towing line as length of barge within the limits of the possible.

  • Container terminals are various in terms of layout, cargo handling systems and operational aspects resulting in difference in productivity and economic feasibility. Therefore, by evaluating different terminal types, more comprehensive understanding can be grasped. For this the paper aims at evaluating the three terminal types under operation, the conventional terminal, the unmaned terminal and the indented terminal, with respect to productivity and cost. Based on the results in connection with the situation of Korean container terminal operation, feasibility for each type is discussed with suggestion for the optimal type.

  • The Principle objective of this paper is to introduce a systematic approach to identifying similar container ports in Asia. For this, it analyses data on port facilities, port facility availability, port service level total container throughput, and economic index, by using Multidimentional Scaling (MDS) method. Based on the analysis it identifies five groupings of similar container ports in Asia within which Port comparison can be justifiably made, evaluates a present position of five groupings on the basis of factors used to compare container ports in Asia ; and finally proposes policy implications for operation efficiency of Pusan container port in comparison with Kaohsiung Port. The major implication is that both the Kaosuing and the Pusan port have to strengthen port facility to attract more traffic, and particularly, Pusan Port has to reinforce the number of berth, total length of berth. and yard areas.

  • Maneuvering vessels in the harbor is an interesting problem in marine cybernetics. The vessel, operated by the pilot and moving very slowly in shallow water, usually is assisted by thrusters, the main propulsion system, and tugboats. In this paper, we suggest a new vessel berthing technique using dampers (cylinder-type fenders) and a system of winches for complex and dangerous berthing situations. We found that control of the fender stroke and rope tension enabled a safe and quick berthing process. The effectiveness and usefulness of this berthing system was verified using a ship of about 2,000 tons.
