  • This paper presents the motivation, design, and a preliminary evaluation of a virtual world builder, CLOVES. CLOVES is designed to support rapid construction of data-rich virtual environments and instruments for young children's science inquiry teaming. It provides a three-tiered programming Interface: a visual design environment, scripting layer, and low-level application programming interface targeting for multiple levels of programming expertise. It is also intended to be a collaborative medium among interdisciplinary domain experts such as educators, 3D modelers and software developers. A preliminary case study was conducted to evaluate the capabilities and effectiveness of CLOVES. The results showed that designers actively participated in decision making at every stage of the design process and shared knowledge among one another.

  • Nowadays, CAD has became an essential tool for designers due to its easy edition and manipulation as well as the capability of communication between designers. Differences between design tool interfaces can cause gaps when visualize designer's ideas. This study is about the differences between various levels of metaphor interface language which is based on the theory of the Hutchins that high-level language interface can reduce the steps of process to visualize the idea of the designers than low-level language interface. This research is based on the assumption that high-level language interface will less interrupt the flow of the design thinking and make more various visual outcomes than the low-level language interface. We verified the hypothesis by analyzing differences of design thinking flow between user groups who used two different animation software. Hopefully, the verification of the hypothesis in this study can be able to guide the use pattern of the CAD tools.

  • In 2005, Giorgetto Giugiaro unveiled the Ferrari GG50 at the 50th anniversary celebration of his design career. Beginning his career at the age of 17, he is a master designer who has achieved design revolution by uniting creativity, design methodology, and technology. He has been awarded a number of international prizes for his exquisite achievements and reputation for car design. Carrozzeria of ITAL DESIGN, founded by Giugiaro, is a company whose ideas combine cutting-edge technology and high quality craftsmanship. Beginning in car design, ITAL DESIGN achieved a positive reputation internationally and, since 1999, has expanded even more rapidly under its new name, ITAL DESIGN-GIUGIARO. The owner of 12 affiliates worldwide, all service systems are buyer-oriented, ensuring the highest level of technical consulting. Beginning with the 1971 Alfa Romeo Alfasud, the 1st major project, more than 100 cars have been designed in the past 35 years, leading to the production or in million cars by major motor companies around the world. Giugiaro has focused on practical performance as well as external beauty in his car design, the best of which enter the mass market. With his philosophy of "I want to be the 1st customer of my design" Giugiaro design invites customer participation and input to meet their needs and demands. Free from the routine, typical image, Giugiaro design has raised the bar for creativity and thinking beyond traditional values and ideologies.

  • Product designers sketch various ideas of foreground figures(detail design) onto background figures(basic form) and evaluate numerous combinations of them in the late stages of design process. Designers have to test their ideas elaborately with a high-fidelity physical model that looks like a real product. However, due to the requirements of time and expense in making high-fidelity design models, it is impossible to evaluate such a number of combinatorial solutions of background and foreground figures. Contrary to digital models, physical design models are not easily modifiable and so designers cannot easily develope ideas through iterative design-evaluation process. To address these problems, we proposed a new concept 'Augmented Plasticity' that gives morphological editability to a rigid physical object using Augmented Reality technology and implemented the idea as Digital Skin system. Digital Skin system figures out the position and orientation of object surface with ARToolKit visual marker and superimposes a deformed surface image seamlessly using differential rendering method. We tried to apply Digital Skin system to detail design, redesign of product, and material exploration task. In consequence, it was found that Digital Skin system has potential to allow designers to implement and test their ideas very efficiently in the late stages of design process.

  • Creativity is considered very important in the intelligence-based and informationalized society in which changes and competition were premised. This phenomenon has appeared in the entire society and especially in design area, the development of creative design is needed. It is the reason that a designer must have an interest in design expression techniques which can be an assistance to express creative ideas and develop it. Under this circumstance, this study was to explore utilizations of the SCAMPER which is one of most useful techniques for expressing and developing creative ideas. Based on the results of the questionnaire research regarding creative expression techniques and trends in utilization of SCAMPER in visual design process, the study sought new possibility of utilization of SCAMPER. The result of the study showed that checklist of SCAMPER was classified and organized to expression of ideas and every steps of development.

  • A thousands of chairs have designed from the Victorian era to the present. Thonet's Nol4 chair in 1859, Wright's high-back chair in 1904, Ritveld's red/blue chair in 1917, Breuer's Wassily chair in 1925, Aalto's Paimio chair in 1932, Eames's DAR chair in 1948, Piero Gatti's Sacco chair in 1969, Starck's Von Volgelsang chair in 1984, Stumpf's Aeron Chair in 1992, Little's 'Coat of arms' chair in 1994 - the list of architects who have seized the opportunity to express their theories in the design of a chair is seemingly endless. Architects such as Machintosh(1868-1928), Wright(1807-1959), Aalto(1898-1976) included chairs within their artistic schemes for interiors and buildings. But as the manufacture of chairs moved away from the domain of the craftsman towards that of the industrial process, architects were also ideally positioned, with their background knowledge of engineering, to pioneer innovative chair design within the constraints of modern manufacturing technology. Beyond matters of function and structure, the fundamental worth of chairs, past or present, lies in their communication of attitudes, ideas and values. The persuasiveness of a chair depend on the clarity of its rhetoric. Chair has become an ideal medium for designers to make their visual statements and construct their individual manifestos. In chair design there is a ping-pong game played out between absurd and useful design, and this game is one way in which the design profession explores itself.
