  • Morphological characters of inflorescence, spikelet, rachilla, glume, lemma and palea about 17 taxa of Korean Poa L. were investigated to evaluate their taxonomic significances. The bulbil present or not, inflorescence shape, callus shape of lemma and surface shape of palea were thought to be the subgenus characters. The keels shapes of palea, the number of lower glume, lateral nerve shape of lemma were thought to be the section characters. The number of floret, rachilla present or not, the number of lower glume, nerve shape of glume, surface shape of lemma were thought to be the species characters. Consequently, 17 taxa of the Korean Poa L. is classified into 3 subgenus (Ochlopoa, Stenopoa, Stenopoa), 7 section(Arenariae, Ochlopoa, Homalopoa, Poa, Pandemos, Tichopoa, Stenopoa). 6 taxa, P. ullungdoensis, P. takeshimana and P. matsumurae, P. nipponica, P. radula, P. viridula, not included in the existing classification system, were suggested to their taxonomic category in infragenic rank, and P. nemoralis, had been included in section Stenopoa of subgenus Stenopoa, was proposed to move to section Poa of subgenus Poa. P. ullungdoensis, reported as new species in 1955, was grasped its taxonomic identity.

  • Cuticle micromorphology of 22 species of Quercus and outgroup were examined by the SEM. Twenty-two species selected each two or three species in all section of the genus Quercus. The genus Trigonobalanus and Alnus are selected as outgroups. Ten characters of the inner surface and eight characters of the outer surface of the cuticle have been described. Some characters, such as the present of papillae, arrangement of subsidiary cell, shape of anticlinal cell wall are considered important character for infrageneric classification. A parsimony analysis of 18 characters resulted in 72 most parsimonious trees with its lengths of 66 steps. The topology obtained from the analysis showed two major lineages. Subgenus Cyclobalanopsis formed one clade by 75% and subgenus Quercus formed another clade by 57% bootstrap value. Based on the cuticle morphology, the two subgenus delimitation of Camus was supported. However, sect. Erythrobalanus and sect. Cerris formed one group, and sect. Lepidobalanus formed polytomy.

  • For the purpose of investigating the distribution and flora of wild mushrooms in Korea, this study was conducted primarily on the genus Amanita. Through survey of Suweon, Kwangneung, Mt. Chiri, Taegwanryung, Yeongdong district and Mt. Hanta, 25 species of Amanita including 3 unrecorded species were discovered and are described in this paper. The author proposes to group 25 Korean species of Amanita into 3 subgenera according to morphological characteristics by the modern taxonomic system, and also designated the 3 unrecorded species of Amanita including one variety in Korean common name.

  • The family Corycaeidae in the neighbouring seas of Korea was taxonomically studied based on the zooplankton samples collected in August, 1986. In this study, nine species belonging to two genera and three subgenera of the Corycaeidae were identified and described with illustrations; Corycaeus (Corycaeus) speciosus, G.(C.) crassiusculus, C. (Ditrichocorycaeus) affinis, C.(D.) andrewsi, C.(D.) erythraeus, C.(Onychocorycaeus) pacificus, c.(O.) catus, C.(O.) agilis, and Farranula gibbula. The distribution patterns of these species showed that C.(D.) affinis appeared to be and indicator species of the coastal waters, and C.(C.) speciosus, C.(C.) crassiusculus, c.(O.) catus, C.(D.) andrewsi, and Farranula gibbula appeared to be indicator species of the warm-oceanic waters.

  • A taxonomic study of Korean Berosus Leach is presented. Four species [Berosus (Berosus) japonicus Sharp, Berosus (Berosus) punctipennis Harold, Berosus (Enoplurus) lewisius Sharp, and Berosus (Enoplurus) spinosus (Steven)] in two subgenera are recognized, one of which [B. (E.) spinosus] is reported for the first time in Korea. We also found that B. (B.) puchellus MacLeay previously recorded in Korea was an incorrect identification of B. (E.) lewisius Sharp. Habitus and SEM photographs, key and diagnoses of the known species are provided.

  • This study was carried out to get some basic information on mechanical properties of Korea Lepidobalanus for rational utilization of wood. Five species of Quercus variabilis, Q. aliena, Q. serrata, Q. mongolica, Q. acutissima belong to Lepidobalanus were investigated in this research. Relationship of anatomical characteristics to compression strength parallel to grain was analyzed using stepwise regression technique. All possible combination of 21 independent variables were regressed on compression strength parallel to grain. The summarized results in this study were as follows: I. In the proportion of wood structural elements, the factors that had the greatest influence on compression strength parallel to grain appeared to be proportion of ray in earlywood in Q. variabilis and Q. acutissima, proportion of wood fiber in latewood in Q. aliena and Q. serrata and proportion of vessel in earlywood in Q. mongolica respectively. 2. In the size of wood element and its structure, the factors that had the greatest influence on compression strength parallel to grain were microfibril angle in Q. variabilis, Q. serrata and Q. mongolica and length of wood fiber in Q. aliena and Q. acutissima.

  • Two naturalized plants of Lespedeza from Korea are reported. L. lichiyuniae T. Nemoto, H. Ohashi & T. Itoh is similar to L. cuneata (Dum. Cours.) G. Don. and L. juncea (L. .f.) Pers. in morphology, but the species differs from them by pink or purple flowers and the under surface of leaflets and cleistogamous pods with densely hairs. L. davidii Franchet is distinguished by distinctly large leaflets from the other Korean Lespedeza and by plants covered with densely tomentose hairs from the Korean species of subgenus Macrolespedeza. In Korea two plants are found on the parks or roads prepared recently.

  • The present study was based on the specimens collected from the Yellow Sea between Sept. 17 and Oct. 2, 1992 within the framework of Korea-China Yellow Sea Research Joint Program. Additional materials were also provided from the benthic samples collected from the tidal mud flats surrounding Inchon, Korea and from the subtidal shallow waters of the Kwang-yang Bay in the southern coast of Korea. Paraonid polychaetes have not been previously reported form Korea waters. Here, a total of six species in two genera are described and illustrated, and they are newly recorded in Korea polychaetous fauna : Cirrophorus furcatus, Cirrophorus armatus, Cirrophorus branchiatus, Aricidea (Aedicira) pacifica, Aricidea (Aricidea) wassi, adn Aficidea (Acesta) assimilis.

  • Based on the reviewing the present specimens and published data, taxonomic revision about the Korean names and distributional ranges of the rajid fishes (Rajidae) in Korea was conducted. As a result, the family Rajidae from Korea was classified into 4 genera encompassing 11 species, Bathyraja bergi, B. isotrachys, Dipturus kwangtungensis, D. macrocauda, D. tengu, Okamejei acutispina, O. boesemani, O. kenojei, O. meerderooortii, Raja koreana and R. pulchra. Proposed new Korean names are "Salhongeo-sok" for the genus Dipturus and the "Hongeo-sok" for the genus Okamejei, because those are elevated from subgeneric to generic rank recently. In particular, the new korean names are needed to be given that, the genus Raja is "Chamhongeo-sok" and R. pulchra is "Chamhongeo". The occurrence of Bathyraja bergi is recognized as in the Korean waters according to this revision. The check list and the map of geographic distributions of 11 species of Rajidae from Korea are presented.
