  • This study aims to define the phylogenetic relationship within Korean Pinus L. and to find the molecular markers which resolve the phylogenetic relationship in genus Pinus. cpDNA atpF-H and psbA-trnH regions were used as molecular markers. We performed the molecular phylogenetic study on 17 taxa of Pinus in Korea. The combined analyses of two gene loci showed that Korean Pinus was a monophyletic group supported by 100% BP. According to the results of separate analyses, psbA-trnH region seems to work better resolving power to clarify the phylogenetic ambiguity in Korean Pinus than those of atpF-H region. Also, we tried to checked the value and resolution of two chloroplast DNA loci on phylogenetic implications.

  • The genus Rhogadopsis Brethes, 1913 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Opiinae), which mostly parasitizes mining flies (Diptera: Agromyzidae), has been considered to subgenus in the genus Opius Wesmael, 1835. However, according to having the derived wing venation and forming a monophyletic clade, the genus Rhogadopsis is elevated to generic rank. As results of faunal survey in Yeoseo-do, Jeonnam, South Korea, the male specimen of Rhogadosis obliqua were collected by sweeping. Diagnosis, description, distribution and diagnostic illustration of Rhogadopsis obliqua are provided.

  • We have examined the pedicel pubescence and other major morphological characters of 11 putative hybrid populations of Aconitum subgn. Aconitum at Mt. Sobaek to understand their origin. These populations show very complicated patterns of variation in pedicel pubescence ; they contain individuals having pedicels (1) completely glabrous, (2) with few micropapillate curved hairs near the receptacle, (3) moderately pubescent with micropapillate curved hairs from middle to upper portion, (4) sparsely pubescent with a mixture of micropapillate curved hairs and smooth-surfaced spreading glandular hairs near the receptacle, and (5) moderately pubescent with both types of hairs but from middle to upper portion. All five types of individuals co-occur in most populations with varying proportions. These results, in conjunction with evidence from the analysis of other major morphological characters, suggest that the populations at Mt. Sobaek were derived from the multiple hybridization events involving A. kusnezoffii, A. japonicum subsup. napiforme, and A. jaluense subsp. jaluense. In addition, the absence of "typical" forms of these putative parental taxa in Mt. Sobaek area suggests that repeated introgression has probably occurred in these populations.

  • The identification of species, hygroscopic property, and ability of ethylene gas absorption of 23 ancient charcoals excavated from wooden coffin burials and roof-tile kilns of Chudong-ri cultural site were investigated. All of the 12 charcoals excavated from wooden coffin burials were broad-leaved trees. Among the total 12 samples, 9 samples were Lepidobalanus and others were Celtis spp.. On the other hand, other 11 charcoals from roof-tile kilns were needle-leaved tree, Pinus spp.(hard pine). The broad-leaved tree charcoals from wooden coffin burials showed a higher moisture absorption capacity than needle-leaved tree charcoals from roof-tile kilns. The ethylene gas absorption was greater in the Lepidobalanus charcoal than that of Celtis spp. and Pinus spp. (hard pine) charcoal. The broad-leaved tree charcoal having high absorption ability of substances was due to a large microporous and specific surface area. Therefore, it was estimated that broad-leaved tree charcoals were filled in order to make favorable condition in tomb. The wood quality of pine is soft and easy to burn because of low specific gravity, as well as high calorific value by resin in wood. We could assume that the pine wood was used as fuel for roof-tile kilns because of easy control of heating and thermal power.

  • Novel cpSSR primers were developed based on the sequence information of the Pinus koraiensis chloroplast genome. A total of 30 cpSSR loci were detected in the chloroplast genome, and a total of 30 primer sets flanking those loci were designed. All primer sets were successfully amplified for chloroplast DNA in P. koraiensis. The cross-species transferability of the 30 primer sets was considerably high in P. pumila (100%) and P. paviflora (97%) belonging to the same Subgenus (Strobus) of P. koraiensis. Meanwhile, the transferability was relatively low (73%) in P. densiflora and P. sylvestris belonging to Subgenus Pinus. A total of 13 cpSSR loci out of the 30 loci were polymorphic in the Mt. Jumbong population of P. koraiensis. The mean of haploid diversity(H) was 0.512. The number of haplotypes(N) and the haplotype diversity($H_e$) were 25 and 0.992, respectively. Of the 25 haplotypes, 22 were unique in the analyzed population. The unique haplotypes differentiated 22 individuals (79%) from the total of 28 individuals. In conclusion, the novel cpSSR primers developed in this study would be applicable to other Pinus species, especially the subgenus Strobus, and provide a high level of polymorphism for the study of genetic variation of P. koraiensis.

  • For 20 taxa of Korean Allium, including 16 species and 5 varieties, examined were morphological characters (i.e. sexuality, structure and shape of underground part, types and growing patterns of leaf and scape, and shapes of perianth, filament and pistil). The specialization and the evolutionary trends of taxonomic characters were inferred from morphological examination. Taxonomic relationships and system of Korean Allium were also studied. The characters showing evolutionary trends were the structure and shape of underground part including rhizome and bulb, leaf, scape, inflorescens, filament and ovary. It seemed that thin and short rhizome developed from thick and long one, and the membranous simple bulb tunic evolved into fibrous reticulate one. The presence of hyaline sheath in A. monanthum of sect. Microscordum was apomorphic. Both angular leaf blade with 2-rowed vascular bundle and flat blade with 1-rowed vascular bundle were developed from terete one with 2-rowed vascular bundle. The base of filament have differentiated from entire to toothed, and 2-ovuled ovary as well as erect scape before flowering was plesiomorphic type. In addition, sexuality, structure of underground part, the presence of hyaline sheath and cross-section structure of leaf were taxonomic characters with the level of the subgenus in this genus. Shape of rhizome, bulb, leaf, scape and pedicel discriminated each section from other ones in the subgenera easily. The shape and arrangement of perianth and filaments were the diagnostic characters for species level along with shape of ovary and stigma.
