  • A new marine interstitial nematode species belonging to the subgenus Quadricoma of order Desmoscolecida is described from Jindo Island, South Korea. The new species, Tricoma (Quadricoma) jindoensis sp. nov., is most allied with T. (Q.) crassicomoides Timm, 1970 in sharing the similar cephalic setae, broadly truncated border of head, lip region including 6 labial papillae, and slender and long spicule among the seven congeners with 44 quadricomoid rings. However, T. (Q.) jindoensis differs from it by the globular protuberance on the penultimate ring, 7 tail rings, and 9 pairs of subdorsal setae in male. This is the first record of Quadricoma nematodes from East Asia.

  • The calanoid copepod Tortanus (Eutortanus) dextrilobatus Chen and Zhang, 1965, which had been recorded only from South China, is redescribed from brackish waters in South Korea. The diagnosis of the little known subgenus Eutortanus is presented hear. The zoogeography of five species of Eutortanus is also discussed.

  • This study was carried out to get some basic information on mechanical properties of Korean Lepidobalanus for the rational utilization of their woods, Five species of Quercus variabilis, Q. aliena, Q. serrata, Q. mongolica, Q. acutissima belonging to Lepidobalanus were investigated in this research. Relationship of anatomical characteristics with bending strength was analyzed using stepwise regression technique. All possible combination of 21 independent variables were regressed on bending strength. The summarized results in this study were as follows: 1) In the proportion of wood structural elements, the most important factors on bending strength appeared to be proportion of wood fiber in earlywood in Q. variabilis and Q. serrate, proportion of ray in earlywood in Q. aliena, proportion of vessel in earlywood in Q. mongolica and proportion of wood fiber in latewood in Q. acutissima, respectively. 2) In the other quantitative anatomical characteristics, the most important factors on bending strength appeared to be number of pore per $1mm^2$ in latewood in Q. variabilis, microfibril angle in Q. aliena and Q. mongolica, length of wood fiber in Q. serrata and height of uniseriate ray in Q. acutissima, respectively.

  • Amanita subgenus Lepidella is a well-known group that includes lethal amanitas. However, the taxonomic investigation of Korean Amanita species is still in progress. In this study, we collected Amanita specimens in Korea from 2009 to 2015 and classified 22 of them as subgenus Lepidella based on the morphology. Phylogenetic analysis of the 22 Amanita specimens based on the internal transcribed spacers sequences identified 16 phylogenetic species which included three undescribed Amanita species (A. sepiacea, A. modesta and A. kotohiraensis). Microscopic features of newly recorded Amanita species were photographed and line drawings were made. All collections cited here are deposited in the Herbarium Conservation Center of the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences.

  • Morphological characters of C. kobomugi, C. gibba, C. echinata. C. remotiuscula. C. maakii. C. curta, and C. loliacea of genus Carex were rexamined. The epidermal patterns of perigynium, achene and leaf were investigated using by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and a light microscope(LM). Morphological characters. such as length and width of stem and leaf, sheath, bract, spike, scale, perigynium, beak of perigynium, length of spike peduncle, size, and frequency of stomatal complex of leaf, number of bract, shape of stem transection, scale and apex of scale, beak and base of perigynium, achene, epidermal cell and cell wall of perigynium, achene, leaf epidermal patterns (fundamental epidermal cell and cell wall, silica body, subsidiary cell), hair, papillae, prickle present/absent of perigynium and leaf were useful for the identification of observed seven taxa. Examined six taxa of section Macrocephalae, Gibbae, Stellulatae, Elongatae, Ovales, and Heleonates were distint from each other with respect of length and width stem, leaf, bract, perigynium, perigynium beak, lenght of spike peduncle, perigynium, and leaf. A key based on data was presented here.

  • Two problematic subgenera of Tomoceridae (Collembola, Insecta) were investigated for their phylogenetic relationships based on morphological characters and allozyme study from three relevant species. Different dendrograms were obtained obtained between morphological and allozyme studies. The morphological data did not give rise to any result distinctive enough to separate the two subgenera whereas the allozyme analysis produced a clear separation by the high genetic distance value. They were consistent, however, whether given rise to by using distance or cladistic methods and also whether character weighting or unweighting approaches employed in the morphological character analysis. As a consequence, it is strongly suggested that any prominent morphological trait might work as a good taxonomical character when supported by a strong genetic divergence as evidenced by allozyme analysis for instance.
