To select suitable cultivars to produce sweet potato (SP) chips instead of potato chips, ten Korean cultivars, Sinjami, Yeunjami, Sinhwangmi, Juhwangmi, Sincheonmi, Sinyulmi, Gunhwangmi, Dahomi, Daeyumi, and Pungwonmi were used. The acrylamide content, quality characteristics, and oxidation stability of SP chips were investigated. Acrylamide content was shown to be under 0.48 mg/kg in case of all cultivars except Yeunjami (1.07 mg/kg). The color values significantly differed among the cultivars and were maintained like those of raw roots. The hardness, brittleness, and fracturability of Juhwangmi and Sinhwangmi chips showed the lowest values, while those of Daeyumi were the highest. According to the sensory evaluation data, the quality characteristics of chips were influenced by not only hardness, fracturability, and crunchiness, but also the flavor taste. Pungwonmi chips showed the highest score, followed by Gunhwangmi and Dahomi chips. Therefore, Pungwonmi, Dahomi, and Gunhwangmi are suggested as suitable cultivars to make SP chips, because of their high overall quality and very low acrylamide content.

The market for potato chips has expanded due to increased consumption of seasoned potato chips. However, the deep-frying process facilitates development of a browning color and formation of acrylamide. The objective of this work was to minimize browning color and acrylamide formation by fermentation prior to deep-frying. Potato slices were fermented by using three Bacillus strains, B. licheniformis (BL), B. methylotrophicus (BM), and B. subtilis, for 6 h at $30^{\circ}C$. In all fermentation groups, contents of total sugars in potato slices decreased. The color of fermented potato chips improved compared to the control. BM potato chips showed the best color values (76.33 in L value, 5.67 in a value, and 34.79 in b value). All fermentation processes reduced levels of acrylamide in deep-fried potato chips. Fermentation of potato slices for 2 h by BL reduced up to 96.1% acrylamide content. It was concluded that the fermentation process can positively affect color development and acrylamide formation.
1, 4-Benzodiazepin 5-one was prepared from 2-aminobenzamide derivatives by acid catalyzed intermolecular cyclization. N-Alkylation of 2-aminobenzamide with $\alpha$-bromo acetaldehyde diethylacetal to 2(2', 2'-diethoxyethyl) aminobenzamide (I) and subsequent treatment of I with acid gave 1, 4-benzdiazepin 5-one, where as the acetyl derivatives of I did not react to 1, 4-benzodiazepin 5-one but to methyl 4-quinazolone (IV).
Bead type super-absorbent resins to be used for release-control were prepared by modification of the inverse suspension polymerization, and their physical properties were characterized. Acrylic acid and acrylamide were used as monomers, and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide was used as crosslinker, controlling the viscosity of monomer solution by adding hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC). SEM studies of the synthesized beads verified that the bead surfaces had many pores with their diameters of several tens nm. The bead sizes were in the range of $500{\sim}3000{\mu}m$, depending on the viscosity of the monomer solution. Both absorbent amount and absorbent rate of the beads were inversely proportional to the bead size, and the maximum water absorbent amount of 1 g beads was determined to be ca. 170~200 g for 5 hrs. The absorbent rate was also dependent on pH change of the aqueous solution, exhibiting the maximum rate in pH ranging from 5 to 11. The absorbent rate decreased as the concentration of salt (NaCl and $MgCl_2$) or ethanol and ethylene glycol increased. Release time of the water absorbed into the bead resins was 700 hrs, confirming the usefulness of the resin for the good release-control materials.

The ability to control filler performance and fines retention is vital in the development of both filled and non filled grades, respectively. This is very important when achieving the desired sheet structure necessary to maximize machine performance and end user demands. A narrow balance exists in attaining the desired retention and formation particularly in systems with heavier ash loads and producing paper and paper board on higher speed high shear equipment. A new generation of both cationic and anionic micropolymer technologies has been developed. These water based chemistries are volatile organic compound (VOC) and alkyphenol ethoxylate (APE) free. When these novel micropolymers are applied with linear poly-acrylamide or in conjunction with inorganic microparticle technologies (such as silica or swellable minerals), substantial increases in drainage, fibre retention and ash retention are observed. These improvements have been observed not only in high filled wood and non wood containing grades such as fine paper and super calendared sheets (SCA), but also in low filled newsprint grades. Of particular note is the drainage improvement seen with the application of the cationic micropolymers in unbleached packaging grades with poly-acrylamide.
Reactions between potassium fluoride with organic halogen-containing carboxylic acids in dimethyl formamide solvent gave a decarboxylation reaction for the case of fluoro carboxylic acids of the type of $CF_3\;COOH,\;C_3F_7COOH,\;and\;C_2F_5COOH,$ whereas an additional partial fluorination together with dimerization reaction occurred for the chlorine containing acids of the type of $CH_2ClCOOH,\;CH_3CHClCOOH, \;CHCl_2COOH\;and\;o-Cl-C_6H_4-COOH.$ The phenyl halides showed no reactivity, but the halides with two electron attracting substituents on the benzene ring gave mainly dimerization reaction. The esters and alcohols gave an usual fluorination reaction. The same reactions in absence of the solvent at the elevated temperature increase the yield of the dimerized product and gave the cyclized product, fluorenone, in case of ο-chlorobenzoic acid. It was found that the fluorination usually precede the decarboxylation reaction by checking the stiochemical sequence of reaction. Catalytic influence of potassium fluoride were discussed and the mechanism of the reaction was considered.

In this study, sequential cross-linked collagen gels were successfully prepared with collagen, which is biomaterial, and acrylamide (AAm), which is a synthetic monomer. The elastic moduli (E) of cross-linked collagen gels were increased from 1.5 to 3.0 kPa by varying of AAm concentrations. In addition, human dermal fibroblasts were encapsulated into the porous pores introduced into the gels, and cell growth and behavior were investigated. Increasing E of the gels led to decreases in cell growth rate, while the cellular glycosaminoglycan (GAG) production level was elevated. Overall, the growth and cellular activity of skin cells were influenced by the extracellular matrix properties of the collagen gels. In conclusion, these results will be highly useful for designing reconstructive skins and various tissue engineering researches.
