  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is prevalent in preschoolers and schoolchildren. The utilization of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasing in patients with AD as well as the general population. This study is based on the utilization of CAM for children with AD. Subjects were children suffering from AD who participated in the project of 'Seoul Atopy Asthma Free School'. In 6,800, the number of subject available data to final analysis was 4,985 for children with AD. Independent variables were age, monthly income of households, sleep disturbance, and dependent variables were medical treatment (MT), oriental medicine clinic (OMC), home remedy (HR) use experience during the past 12 months. As a result, MT was 76.5%, OMC was 24.6%, and HR was 62.3%, while multiple treatment from OMC and HR was 34.2%, and MT with OMC and HR was 18.8%. And variables influenced on CAM were age, monthly income of households, and sleep disturbance. However, some parents, tended to recognize that home remedy was effective and safe than other treatments. Therefore, it is recommended to counsel with physician about the merits and demerits of CAM.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure and evaluate the degree of the pain using tools such as faces, glasses, chips, and colors for 96 children in three general hospitals. The children preferred faces, glasses, chips and colors in order, and they preferred orange color for pain-free and black for intense pain. The pain score was significantly high with the children who did not have experience in hospital except colors tool in the difference by means of general characteristics(faces, glasses, chips; p<0.05). Faces, glasses, chips, colors tools are pain assessment tools which are easy simple to handle by children including family and medical personnel. We expect these tools will be used in many ways to assess pain according to a child's age in a clinical setting.

  • This study evaluated the voice of 68 normal children and 50 children with palatine tonsil and adenoid hypertrophy with MDVP to examine the hypothesis that their mouth breathing makes the vocal folds dry and this condition contributes to lower the level of voice quality. The results showed that children with palatine tonsil and adenoid hypertrophy had statistically significant elevations in Jitt, RAP, PPQ, Shim and APQ parameters, and had the lower level of voice quality. Therefore, the children with palatine tonsil and adenoid hypertrophy need vocal hygiene education.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the construct validity of the Sensory Profile for children with congenital cerebral palsy. Parents of 87 children(the ages of 3 to 10) with congenital cerebral palsy participated in this study. The data were analyzed through Winstep version 3.81 using the Rasch model to examine the uni-dimensionality of the fit of each item, the distribution of difficulty of each item, and the reliability and appropriateness of the rating scale. Based on a Rasch analysis, four out of the 87 children were considered to be inappropriate participants, and 15 item of the Sensory Profile was determined to be an inappropriate item. The items of high-level difficulty are needed as new items of the Korean Sensory Profile. The rating scale of three categories were appropriate than those of the five categories. The person and item separation reliability of three categories was above 0.90, which is a relatively excellent value. Finally, it will be need to verify of validity for Korean version of Sensory Profile, to develop new item of a high level of difficulty and convert into three point rating scale.

  • Purpose: To follow up Korean patients with metabolic and endocrine disorders ascertained by Korea Genetics Research Center, and assess the long-term effectiveness of extended newborn screening program in Korea. Methods: From January 2000 to December 2017, tandem mass spectrometry and fluoroimmunoassay were employed in extended newborn screening (NBS). The NBS program obtained dried blood spots from 283,626 babies, 48 hours after birth, and screened for galactosemia, congenital hypothyroidism (CH), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and 50 preventable inborn errors of amino acid, fatty acid, and organic acid metabolism. Results: 28 cases of amino acid disorders, 75 cases of organic acid disorders, 27 cases of fatty acid disorders, 51 cases of urea cycle disorders, 127 cases of CH, 14 cases of CAH, and 15 cases of galactosemia were ascertained through NBS and subsequent confirmatory laboratory tests. Patients with amino acid metabolic disorders, galactosemia, CH, or CAH were more likely to have a better long-term outcome if detected early. Early management of MSUD led to much better outcome in over 90%. Despite early intervention, 32% of other organic acidemia cases still resulted in developmental delay and neurological problems. Fatty acid disorders showed varied results; those with EMA and MCAD had a good outcome, but those with VLCAD had serious neurological problems and considerably higher mortality. 75% with UCD experienced serious neurological complications and higher mortality. Conclusion: The nation-wide NBS program must be accompanied by comprehensive long-term management and physician and family education of inborn errors of metabolism for a better outcome.
