Longitudinal Associations among Social Withdrawal, Peer Relationships, and Depression in Adolescence (청소년의 사회적 위축, 또래관계, 우울 간의 종단적 관계)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 청소년기의 사회적 위축과 또래관계, 그리고 우울 간에 어떠한 종단적 관계가 있는지 검증하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 한국아동 청소년패널조사(KCYPS) 중학교 1학년 2, 3차년도 자료에 대하여 자기회귀 교차지연모형을 구성하고 이에 대하여 구조방정식을 이용하여 실증적 검증을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 2차년도의 사회적 위축, 또래관계, 우울은 각각 3차년도의 동일한 변인에 대하여 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 2차년도의 또래관계는 3차년도의 사회적 위축과 우울에 모두 유의한 영향을 미치는 반면, 2차년도의 사회적 위축과 우울은 각각 3차년도의 또래관계에만 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 이상에서 도출된 연구 결과에 근거하여 사회적 위축과 또래관계, 그리고 우울을 경험하고 있는 청소년들에 대한 예방 및 개입과 관련된 함의가 제시되었다.

  • Research on biological aspects on adult depression has been subjected to more than 25 years of systematic research, while biologic investigations regarding childhood and adolescent depression are only now being initiated. Although no unifying, explanatory theory of the biologic etiology of childhood depression emerges from the results of studies reviewed above, the findings do support that biological factors may be involved in the genesis of childhood depression. The research reviewed in this paper suggests that age and pubertal factors have major effects in most biological markers of depression. Some of these markers, like sleep EEG and neuroendocrine markers should be broken down by decades during adult life span. Thus, although adult data are very valuable points of departure for biological research on child and adolescent depression, it is very hard to transfer the adult data to prepubertal children and adolescents, ignoring the biological changes that take place in growth and development, pubety and aging. A great deal of work in basic developmental neuroscience remains to be done. It will be crucial for further advances in this field to determine the normal patterns of neurotransmitter interaction in this age group and to study children at high risk for depression. It will be also crucial to use primate models of depressive illness in order to be able to answer the many queations that cannot be investigated in humans for ethical issues. Conclusively, much closer collaboration between developmental and neurobiological and behavioral studies in primates and in humans will be essential for further development.

The Relationship between Recurrent Abdominal Pain and Depressive Trends in School-Aged Children (학동기 소아에서 반복성 복통과 우울 성향과의 관계)

  • Purpose: Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) is common, affecting between 7% and 25% of school-aged children and young adult. This study was designed to assess the relationship between RAP and depressive trends in school-aged children. Methods: In 1999, We surveyed 1,181 elementary school children (566 boys and 615 girls) whose ages ranged from 9 to 12 years. The degree of depression was compared between the group with RAP and normal control group without RAP according to Korean Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) of Kovacs and Beck. Results: The number of the group with RAP was significantly higher in female (25.7%) than in male (18.9%). The most common site of abdominal pain was periumbilical. The mean depression score in the group with RAP was higher than that of the control group. The depression score was significantly higher in the group with RAP who has frequently pain and additional symptoms. The depression score was significantly higher in the group with RAP who prefered to play alone, did not enjoy going to school and had few friends than in the group with RAP who had a lot of friends, had active and meticulous characters. The depression scores were not significantly different according to the duration of abdominal pain, the onset time of pain, and the day of pain in the group with RAP. Conclusion: The depression score of the group with RAP was higher than that of normal group. So, there is relatively a specific association between childhood RAP and depression in school aged children. It is good for physicians to consider psychological support in the treatment of childhood RAP.

The Gender Difference in the Longitudinal Effect of Employment on Depressive Symptoms among Older Adults (노년기 취업이 우울에 미치는 종단적 영향의 성차)

  • The goal of this study was to examine the association between employment and depressive symptoms among older adults in Korea, including analysis of potential gender differences. Using a sample of Korean adults aged 60 years or older from the 2008(Time 2) and 2010(Time 3) national longitudinal survey data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing, we regressed measures of depressive symptoms at Time 3 on employment at Time 2 (and employment both at Time 2 and Time 3), controlling for Time 2 depressive symptoms, subjective physical health, and sociodemographic variables as well. First, there was no evidence that older adults with a job at Time 2 had significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms at Time 3 compared to their counterparts. However, multi-group analyses showed that the effect of employment at Time 2 on depression at Time 3 differed by gender. For older men, employment predicted better mental health over time. However, this was not the case for older women. As such work role provided benefits only for older men. Second, older adults with a job at both Time 2 and Time 3 reported significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms at Time 3 than older adults who did not have a job either at Time 2 or Time 3. However, only older men who were employed at both Time 2 and Time 3 reported significantly less depression than their counterparts. These findings suggest that the mental health effects of employment are contingent on gender.

Impact of the Experience of Sexual Abuse on Depression in Female Adolescents and Mediation Effect of Distorted Sex-Related Belief (성폭력 경험이 청소년기 여학생의 우울에 미치는 영향과 왜곡된 성통념의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this research was to clarify the impact of sexual abuse experienced by female adolescents on depression and to examine mediation effects of distorted beliefs related to sex. Self-report questionnaires were distributed to middle and high school female students in Seouland Gyonggi Areas. The549responseswereanalyzedbyregressionanalysis. Results indicated that 22.2% of the respondents had experienced sexual abuse; the experience of sexual abuse had a significant effect on distorted sex-related belief, but not on depression. Distorted sex-related beliefs, however, mediated between the experience of sexual abuse and depression. This study suggests the necessity for intervention and practical methods for the prevention of adolescent sexual abuse.

  • This study investigated the effect of parental behavior and school adjustment on the depression of school aged children. The subjects were 386 6th graders (206 boys and 180 girls) from 6 elementary schools in Seoul and Kyoung-gi Province. Questionnaires were used to investigate the children's depression, school adjustment and parental behavior. Data were analyzed by SPSS-WIN program, including mean, standard deviation, correlational analysis, ANOVA, and regression. Results were as follows. (1) The children who perceived their parents' support and warmth as higher were less depressive than those who perceived them as lower. (2) The children who were good at school were less depressive than those who were not. (3) There were interaction effects of the children's school adjustment and parental behavior perceived by children on their depression. The regression analysis showed that the children's school adjustment was more influential on the depression of school aged children than the parental behavior perceived by children.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the spread of a new type of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) on the mental state in school-age children and parents focusing on the aspects of sleep disorders and depression. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 123 parents and 108 school-age children who visited Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital at Gangdong from April 2, 2020 through April 25, 2020, via the direct writing method. Participants were assessed with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)-7, Center for Epidemiology Scale for Depression. Logistic regressions were used with a level of significance of 5%. The prevalence of GAD, depression, and poor sleep in parents were 34.1%, 17.1% and 44.7%, respectively. The prevalence of GAD in children was 20.4%. Logistic regression showed that stress from Emergency Alert Messages about COVID-19 was associated with GAD and depression in parents. In children, the degree of emotional change after COVID-19 was associated with GAD. This study confirmed that there was a change in the psychological status of children and guardians due to the epidemic of coronavirus disease-2019, and it would be necessary to consider their psychological status during dental treatment.

  • Child and adolescent depressive disorders are complex clinical problems. Although our knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical manifestation and etiology of child and adolescent depressive disorder has grown enormously, less has been established concerning effective managements for this disorder Some articles suggest that children and adolescents may require significant modification of adult treatment. This article reviews the range of available therapies for the condition add provides a systematic approach for the clinician. And guidelines f3r management of depression have been described. In conclusion, approaches to the treatment of this disorder must be comprehensive and broad-based to be successful. And practitioners should be encouraged to become skilled iii as many treatment as possible, because the needs of individual children and adolescents with depressive disorder and their families can vary greatly.

Childhood Trauma and Pharmacotherapy Retention among Outpatients with Panic Disorder (공황장애 외래 환자의 아동기 외상과 약물치료 유지)

  • Objectives : This study investigated lifetime experiences of trauma, treatment retention, and psychiatric symptoms among outpatients with panic disorder after initiation of pharmacotherapy. Our research hypothesis was that panic patients with childhood trauma would display more severe symptoms and less treatment retention compared to those without such history. Methods : A total of 135 first-visit outpatients with DSM-IV panic disorder were approached during the period from March 2012 to August 2016. Fifty-three patients (39%) either refused or returned incomplete questionnaires, leading to a final sample size of 82. Participants completed the Trauma History Screen, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Abbreviated PTSD checklist. Results : The number of lifetime trauma was significantly correlated with treatment retention (rho=-0.269, p=0.015). Among subtypes of trauma, only childhood physical abuse was significantly correlated with treatment retention (rho=-0.298, p=0.007). Conclusions : Our results indicated that psychological trauma, particularly of an interpersonal nature from childhood, can affect pharmacotherapy treatment retention in panic disorder. This may be mediated by poor patient-doctor relationships originating from trust issues among childhood trauma survivors or lack of perceived improvement due to the more severe symptoms and unfavorable course experienced by those with childhood trauma. Further studies are needed to explore the reasons for poor treatment adherence in this population.

Factors Influencing the Experience of Depression among School-aged Children from Multicultural Families (다문화 가정 학령기 아동의 우울 영향 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the experience of depression in school-aged children from multicultural families. Methods: Data from 1,812 school-aged children of multicultural families were collected from the 2015 National Multicultural Family Survey. Logistic regression was conducted based on complex sample analysis using SAS 9.4. Results: Significant predictors for experiencing depression were lower self-esteem, lower Korean proficiency, less time spent conversing with the father, lower degree of parental interest, poorer school adjustment, greater difficulties with schoolwork, and experiencing violence at school. Conclusion: This study showed that factors related to the individual, family, and school environment influenced the experience of depression. Based on a consideration of these factors, it is necessary to develop an effective program to prevent depression by establishing high-risk criteria for depression.
