Geological achievements of the 20th century revolutionized our views about geological understanding and concept. A good example is the concept of continental drift suggested early in the 20th century and later explained in terms of seafloor spreading and plate tectonics. Our understanding of the compositions of materials forming earth has also improved during the20th century. Radio and stable isotopes together with biostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy allow us to interpret the evolution of sedimentary basins in terms of plate movement and sedimentation processes. The Deep Sea Drilling Project initiated in 1960s and continued as the Ocean Drilling Project in 1980s is one of the most successful international research observations, and new developments in computational techniques have provided a wholly new view about the interior of the earth. Most of the geological features and phenomena observed in deep sea and around continental margins are now explained in terms of global tectonic processes such as superplumes flowing up from the interior of our planet and interacting with such as Rodinia Pannotia and Nena back in the Precambrian time. The space explorations which began in the late 1950s opened up a new path to astrogeology, astrobiology, and astropaleontology. The impact theory rooted in the discovery of iridium and associated phenomena in 1980s revived Cuvier's catastrophism as a possible explanation for the extinctions of biotas found in the geological record of this planet. Due to the geological achievements made in the 20th century, we now have a better understanding of geologic times and processes that were too long to be grasped by human records.

The oceans could absorb almost all the anthropogenic carbon dioxide the mankind has been producing eventually, but in the nature the air-sea $CO_2$ exchange occurs very slowly and to lower the atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration substantially $CO_2$ must be injected to the interior of the ocean directly. If we inject $CO_2$ collected at the major $CO_2$ sources into the international waters in the Philippine Sea or east of Japan, we could store the $CO_2$ in the oceans effectively for a few hundred years. When $CO_2$ is dissolved into the water, PH drops. The creatures adapted to the deep oceans where environment is very stable could be affected by even a small change in pH significantly. If, therefore, we are to inject $CO_2$ into the oceans, we must assess the effect of $CO_2$ injection in the marine ecosystem beforehand. Only when the damage to the marine ecosystem is smaller than the benefit from the $CO_2$ injection, $CO_2$ injection is effective.
Korea IS one of countries to be predicted short of water in the 21st century. The government has been investigating various alternatives to resolve the problems including construction of reservoirs. Freshwater retention techniques using boom and skirt system is one of them. It is very difficult to intake water in the estuaries of south and west coast of Korea because a big tide penetrates into an upstream river. Thus, means or retaining and keeping separate freshwater from seawater could potentially be helpful in solving the water supply problems. In this study, the proposed means to achieve freshwater retention is by use of floating boom and skirt systems. The hydraulic viability of these systems in taking advantage of natural stratification tendencies between the fresh and seawaters has been investigated through hydraulic experiments. It is found that freshwater retention capacity depends on skirt length and the opening beneath the skirt. The choice of skirt length IS very important to optimize freshwater storage because longer skirt lengths cause faster mixing and shorter lengths retain less volume. Results show that the freshwater retention volume generally increases as the length of the skirt increases. However, they show that water storage might be insufficient if skirts were either too long or too short.

Zooplankton samples were collected vertically from different layers with a closing net at 14 stations in the middle East Sea of Korea in February, August and September to study distribution of biological indicators for analysis of water masses. Horizontal and vertical distributions of important species of copepods and chaetognathas known as indicator species were closely related to distributions of different water masses and oceanic fronts. Pleuromamma gracilis, Calanus tenuicornis, Sagitta enflata and Sagitta minima were found to be reliable indicator species to determine warm water mass with warm core, and Calanus cristatus, Calanus tonsus and Sagitta elegans could be used as cold water species for evaluating the movement of cold current from North Korea, and Gaetanus armiger was deep sea water species. Therefore, it was found that North Korean Cold Current down to the south along the coast appeared to be significant in the surface around Chumunjin area, and from here towards the south the cold water containing S. elegans submerged under warm water with S. enflata which were about $2{\~}4^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the vicinity and reappeared near Chukpeon area in surface layer. In the layer between loom and 300m depths, distribution of Pleuromamma gracilis and Sagitta bedoti indicated that warm water mass and front zone influenced by the different water systems were formed in northwestern area off Ulreung-do. In $300{\~}500m$ layer, the proper cold water could be estimated to be present in the northwestern area off Ulreung-do throughout the survey period by the high abundance of Gaetanus armiger. In August, distributions of S. bedoti, S. enflata and S. minima were valuable index to find oceanic fronts and warm core.

The Lago Sofia conglomerate in southern Chile is a lenticular unit encased within mudstone-dominated, deep-sea successions (Cerro Toro Formation, upper Cretaceous), extending from north to south for more than $120{\cal}km$. The Lago Sofia conglomerate is a unique example of long, gravelly deep-sea channels, which are rare in the modern environments. In the northern part (areas of Lago Pehoe and Laguna Goic), the conglomerate unit consists of 3-5 conglomerate bodies intervened by mudstone sequences. Paleocurrent data from these bodies indicate sediment transport to the east, south, and southeart. The conglomerate bodies in the northern Part are interpreted as the tributary channels that drained down the Paleoslope and converged to form N-S-trending trunk channels. In the southern part (Lago Sofia section), the conglomerate unit comprises a thick (> 300 m) conglomerate body, which probably formed in axial trunk channels of the N-5-trending foredeep trough. The well-exposed Lago Sofia section allowed for detailed investigation of sedimentary facies and large-scale architecture of the deepsea channel conglomerate. The conglomerate in Lago Sofia section comprises stratified conglomerate, massive-to-graded conglomerate, and diamictite, which represent bedload deposition under turbidity currents, deposition by high-density turbidity currents, and muddy debris flows, respectively. Paleocurrent data suggest that the debris flows originated from the failure of nearby channel banks or slopes flanking the channel system, whereas the turbidity currents flowed parallel to the orientation of the overall channel system. Architectural elements produced by turbidity currents represent vertical stacking of gravel sheets, lateral accretion of gravel bars, migration of gravel dunes, and filling of channel thalwegs and scoured hollows, similar to those in terrestrial gravel-bed braided rivers. Observations of large-scale stratal pattern reveal that the channel bodies are offset stacked toward the east, suggestive of an eastward migration of the axial trunk channel. The eastward channel migration is probably due to tectonic tilting related to the uplift of the Andean protocordillera just west of the Lago Sofia deep-sea channel system.
This study aims to determine the necessity, role, utilization, and operation and management plan in relation to the underwater space platform where humans can newly reside. It provides a comprehensive opinion on the need for creating undersea space and operation plans based on opinions of industry-university-affiliated organizations involved in the R&D project of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for the utilization of undersea space and external experts participating in marine technology development. In this study, a survey was conducted on researchers participating in the construction of a Korean submarine space platform. FGI was conducted on marine technology development experts. Results were then derived. As a result of the analysis, the need for subsea space construction was found to be high. As for the role of subsea space, the most common opinion was to develop technology for utilizing subsea space and to secure marine science research functions. It was found that the creation of subsea space would have a positive impact on the domestic industry, especially the deep-sea development industry and the shipbuilding/offshore structure industry. In terms of utilization, after the end of the seabed space test bed, the response to utilization as a marine observation base and marine ecosystem research had the highest proportion. As for expected inconvenience, discomfort in the psychological environment was the highest. Experts suggest that securing a continuous budget is most important for stable operation in the future and that securing a manpower budget is essential for itemized budgets. In addition, it was judged that it would be appropriate to establish a prior agreement from the time of the prior agreement and prepare a countermeasure before proceeding with the project in order to ensure ownership issues, consignment management issues, and cost issues when using the project after the end of the project.
