The Real-time Printed Alphabets Recognition using Artificial Neural Networks (인공신경망을 이용한 실시간 영문인쇄체 인식)

  • The goals of this papper are not only to maximize of performance but also to reduce the response time for the real-time printed alphabets recognition system using the backpropagation algorithm in the artificial neural network. The Genesis board and MIL(Matrox Image Library) package were used to real-time acquisition, processing and display of images. Through this experiment proved the possibility of real-time recognition processing by comparing response times of the system and proposing the method to reduce of order of the output vectors.

  • 토목공사장에서 암파쇄 작업은 경제성과 안정성에 지대한 영향을 미치는 작업이다. 본 논문은 대전지역에서 수행된 암파쇄 공법 설계 및 시공사례로서, 현장암반의 특성을 고려한 적정발파공법을 선정하기 위하여 대상 지역의 지질현황을 조사·분석하고, 또한 민원이 첨예한 도로개설 공사장에서 시험발파를 실시하여 이를 토대로 암절취 공법을 선정하여 시공한 사례보고이다. 대전지역의 지질은 선캠브리아기의 변성암류와 변성퇴적암류 및 이를 관입한 심성암류와 중생대 화강암으로 이루어져 있는 복잡한 분포를 이루고 있다. 사례연구 대상 현장은 편상구조가 현저한 관입 편상화강암 및 화강암질 편마암으로 구성되어 있었으며, 시험발파 및 분석결과를 기초로하여 25.5m이내 지역은 HRS 등 무진동 파쇄공법의 적용을 제안하였고, 25.5∼36m 범위의 대부분 지역은 진동제어를 할 수 있는 제어발파공법을 권장하였고, 기타 진동 영향권에서 비교적 안전한 것으로 나타난 지역은 소발파공법을 적용하도록 제안하였다. 제안된 안에 따라 설계를 보완하고 시공한 결과 문제의 발생없이 성공적으로 시공이 완료되었다.

  • Generally, the three position solenoid valve has veen used for the hydraulic steering gear on account of it’s low cost, simplicity in device, etc. But, there is some off-set because of dead-zone which exists in on-off valves. In this paper, we proposed a combined controller which was added an integral controller to an only on-off one in hydraulic steering gear control system used low speed three position solenoid valve. Experimental results show that the off-set is removed, and the number of valve switching is reduced considerable. The validity of proposed method comparing with an only on-off control was proved by the response experiments.

  • The constrained modulus, representative property to evaluate compressibility of soil, is needed to estimate the settlement of ground structure. A series of lab and field cone penetration tests for clayey soil of Busan new-port and Noksan industrial area were conducted to evaluate the estimation method of constrained modulus. Since CPT generates large deformation of ground, it is difficult to correlate the cone resistance with the constrained modulus. Therefore, appropriate correlation between them is essential to estimate the constrained modulus based on CPT results. The test results show that the ratio of the constrained modulus to the cone resistance is inversely proportional with plasticity index. Based on this result, the estimation method of constrained modulus for Busan clay is suggested.

Children's Perception of Reading (아동의 읽기에 대한 인식)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate children's perception of reading. The researchers interviewed 120 children aged 5 to 7 (40 for each age group) by using a specially designed interview format. The study of Johns (1973) was referred to as a guide in preparing the format. Responses of the children were classified in accordance with criteria worked out on the basis of the researchers' previous studies and analyzed in terms of frequencies and percentiles by age group. ${\chi}^2$ test was used to analyze the data. The findings of the study were: (1) The younger the children, the higher the rate of showing no response or of responding only to concrete incidents or things. Older children in general showed higher responses relevant to reading comprehension than younger ones. (2) Older children were more inclined than younger ones to regard the process of reading as a skill-oriented, teacher-based process. (3) Children in these age groups showed little perception of reading's objectives of comprehension and communication.

  • A recently developed Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) technique is applied to the detection of the damage locations of bridge structures. The HHT may be used to identify the locations of damages which exhibit nonlinear and non-stationary behavior, since the instantaneous frequency characteristics of the measured signal can be analyzed by the HHT. Numerical simulations were conducted on two bridge systems with damages using controlled excitations with sweeping frequency. Nonlinear plastic model using a gap element is employed to model the behavior of the cracked elements in the numerical simulations. The results indicate that the HHT method can reasonably identify the damage locations based on a limited number of acceleration sensors. Experimental study has been 실so carried out on a steel frame to confirm the applicability of the HHT to detect a structural connection with loosened bolts.

  • The magnetic levitation system is utilized in the magnetic bearing of high-speed rotor because of little friction, no lubrication, no noise and so on. The magnetic levitation system need the feedback controller for the stabilization of system, and gap sensors are generally used to measure the gap. The use of gap sensors brings out the increase of the number of troublesome, and the decrease of the control performance because of the dislocation between the measurement point and the control point. This paper presents the design of the gap estimation circuit for the sensorless method proposed by authors in the magnetic levitation system. We made the gap estimation circuit which was composed of both the superposition circuit and the measuring circuit. And we investigated the validity of the usefulness of the proposed sensorless method in the magnetic levitation system through results of actual experiment.

  • To investigate design factors of dilution ventilation system, numerical analysis of air contamination flow and concentration distribution have been made, by using the low Reynolds number turbulent model. And flow visualization and measurement of particle concentration for that model also have been made. By comparing of these results we have secured the essential data for the adequate counterplan of dilution ventilation system. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Inlet should be located near the wall for the prevention of the formation of the recircula¬tion zone. 2) In case of natural exhaust, air contamination flow is driven to the far outlet from the inlet. 3) It is favorable for dilution to make turbuence as much as possible.

  • This study is intended to propose a systematic procedure for the development of the reliability-based seismic safety and cost-effective Performance criteria for design and upgrading of long span PC bridges. In the paper, a set of cost function models for life cycle cost analysis of bridges is proposed. The total life cycle cost functions consist of initial cost and direct/indirect damage costs considering repair/replacement costs, human losses and property damage costs, road user costs, and indirect regional economic losses. The damage costs are successfully expressed in terms of Park-Ang median global damage indices and damage probabilities. The proposed approach is successfully applied to model bridges in both regions of a moderate seismicity area like Seoul, Korea and a high one like Tokyo, Japan. It may be expected that the proposed approach can be effectively utilized for the development of cost-effective performance criteria for design and upgrading of various types of bridges as well as long span PC bridges.
