  • Replacements for natural dentition must fulfil many criteria. An important aspect, especially for the patient, is aesthetic consideration. The shape and colour can be important factors in the aesthetic success of an anterior restoration. In order to allow for proper shape; the outline form, the spatial position of individual teeth and the surface characteristics must be considered. For the colour; translucency, value, chroma and hue must be expressed exactly. The dentist and technicians should catch up these very specific characteristics of the patient and convert them accurately to the restorations with the simplest way.

  • Intrinsic discoloration of permanent anterior teeth is a continuing esthetic problem. Tetracycline ingested during amelogenesis has long been recognized as predisposing factor in intrinsic staining. Methods for restoring original tooth color have included (1) complete PFM crown coverage (2) porcelain laminate veneers (3) direct bonding of composite resin, and (4) bleaching. In the case of tetracycline-stained upper anterior teeth, We authors, obtained the satisfactory results by means of gingivectomy, preliminary bleaching and porcelain laminate veneer restoration.

  • Black staining of the teeth in children and adolescents does not cause pain or serious illness, but it can be socially debilitating for esthetic reasons. Black staining is easily removed through periodic professional mechanical tooth cleaning and ultrasonic scaling, but it can easily recur within few months. Using essential oil-containing mouth rinses diluted at 50% twice per day could prevent the black staining from returning after it is removed, reducing the need for mechanical treatments and improving esthetics.

  • Digital dentistry is becoming a mainstream of dental practice. We are already used to intraoral scan, guided implant surgery, manufacture of prosthesis (CAD-CAM) in our daily practice; those are not sensational anymore. However, treatment planning with digital simulations is not spotlighted enough. In this report, a digital mockup was utilized to visualize the final goal of maxillary rehabilitation including all anterior and posterior teeth, and persuade a patient who wanted restoration of only anterior teeth. We will also discuss the use of digital mockup and its actual copy as the guide of altered vertical dimension through the clinical process.

  • Severely worn dentition causes various complications such as loss of tooth structure, discoloration, pulp complications and loss of function and aesthetics. In this case, the patient showed particularly severe attrition in the anterior teeth and lack of space for restoration. The amount of vertical dimension was determined based on the diagnostic wax up, and the patient's adaptation was evaluated by using a removable occlusal splint for 6 weeks. Thereafter, the coordination of the muscular nervous system, aesthetics, temporomandibular joint were re-evaluated for 3 months by restoring the fixed provisional restoration. Through the above treatment process, the final restoration was completed with full mouth fixed prosthesis using monolithic zirconia, and functionally and aesthetically stable results were obtained.

  • Although the finishing of ceramic restorations affects overall results of prosthetic procedures, the importance of finishing procedures has been underestimated. Finishing procedures have influence on the esthetics, and strength of ceramic restorations, and attrition of opposite tooth. For achieving the appropriate results of these factors, the overall understanding related to the finishing procedures of ceramic restoration is necessary.

  • Diastema often does not cause functional problems, but it is not without aesthetic issues. It is considered a serious aesthetic flaw by many patients. Traditional orthodontic and prosthetic treatments have been the mainstream treatment, but there has been an increasing demand for treatment using composite resin. Even though anterior teeth are relatively easy to access and have good visibility, many dentists do not prefer resin-based treatments because they are more complicated and time-consuming than expected. In this article, we will examine four techniques for addressing diastema and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

A noninvasive esthetic treatment of isolated microdontia using new high-translucent cubic-phase zirconia (5Y-PSZ) laminate veneers: A case report (고투명도 입방정상 지르코니아(5Y-PSZ) 라미네이트를 이용한 왜소치의 비침습적 심미 수복 증례)

  • Current trends in restorative dentistry focus on improving the esthetics and keeping the sound dental tissues as long as possible. The aims of this case report were to describe the successful outcome of cubic-phase zirconia laminate veneers for a patient with isolated microdontia by using a digital workflow, and to describe their clinical implications. A 15-year-old female who had isolated microdontia in combination with spacing visited Ajou University Dental Hospital for esthetic treatment. In this case, 6 maxillary anterior teeth were restored with cubic-phase zirconia laminate veneers without tooth structure removal by using a digital impression, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) procedures. At 6-month follow-up, no distinct mechanical and biological complications were detected and the prostheses exhibited satisfactory esthetics and functions. Due to its favorable tissue responses and enhanced translucency, cubic-phase zirconia can be a suitable strategy for a noninvasive esthetic approach.
