  • Rock seems to be the ultimate excellent reaction for engineering loads, and often it Is. But the term rock includes a variety of types and conditions of material, some of which are surely not excellent and some that are potentially dangerous. Therefore, It is necessary to research absorption properties by rock strength. In this aspect the present paper deals essentially with the absorption exhibited by some Gneiss and Shale relation to its point load Index and specific gravity. In order to verify the rock strength, point load tester and two types rock specimen were used. Experimental results show that the absorption properties are highly dependent on rock strength. • From their general natures of peraluminous, S-type and ilmenite-series granites, two-mica granites in the Cheongsan, Inje-Hongcheon, Yeongju and Namwon areas were originated from crust-derived granitic magma and solidified under reducing condition. Each two-mica granite in Inje-Hongcheon and Namwon districts was differentiated from the the residual magma of porphyric biotite granite and high Ti/Mg biotite granite, respectively. The genetic relationships between two-mica granite and porphyritic biotite granite in Chenongsan district and between two-mica granite and biotite granodiorite in Yeongju district are ambiguous. In Namwon district granitic magmas were water-saturated and possible water solubilities in magmas were more than 5.8wt.%. In Yeongju district two-mica granitic magma was nearly water-saturated and showed possible water solubilities between 2.4~5.8wt.%. Two-mica granitic magmas in Cheongsan and Inje-Hongcheon districts were water-undersaturated. Pressure-dependent minimum melt compositions (0.5~2kb) and petrographic textures of two-mica granites in Inje-Hongcheon and Yeongju districts represent that the granites intruded and solidified at shallow level, whereas those in Cheongsan and Namwon districts exhibit relatively deeper level of granitic intrusion (2-3kb). The intersection of granite-solidus/muscovite stability indicates that magmatic primary muscovite can be crystallized from the water-saturated magma above 1.6kb (ca. 6km), but below the pressure muscovite can be formed by the subsolidus reaction. On the other hand, more pressure would be necessary for the crystallization of primary muscovite from the water-undersaturated magma. This pressure condition can explain the occurrence of primary and secondary muscovites from the two-mica granites in the areas considered. The experimental muscovite stability must be cautious of the application to examine the origin of muscovite. The muscovite stability can move toward high temperature field with adding of Ti, Fe and Mg components to the octahedral site of pure muscovite end member.

  • Kyeonggi Gneiss complex forming Korean Precambrian basement is mainly composed of high-grade metasedimentary rocks, which are generally difficult to determine their absolute ages. We examined the feasibility of successive absolute age determination method for the marbles from this basement. We used hydrochloric acid for the selective dissolution of carbonate minerals from the marbles. Trace element analysis shows that most of Zr and Rb are concentrated in the residues. U in the residue is more abundant than that in HC1-dissolved parts. Pb, Sr, Sm, and Nd are somewhat evenly distributed between HC1-dissolved parts and the residues. }Th shows rather complex behavior. Sr isotopic compositions of the HC1-dissolved parts reveal mixing with Sr from non-carbonate minerals having much higher $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratios. We suggest that the most reliable method in the age determination for the marbles of this area is measuring Pb isotopic ratios of the pieces of pure marbles.

  • Birnessite is a layered manganese oxide mineral with ~7 Å of d-spacing. Because of its high cation exchange capacity, birnessite greatly impacts the chemical compositions of ground water and fluids in sediment pores. Understanding the cation exchange mechanisms requires atomistic investigations of the crystal structures and coordination environments of hydrated cations in the interlayer. In this study, we conducted classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, an atomistic simulation method of computational mineralogy, for triclinic Na-birnessite and K-birnessite whose chemical formula are from previous experiments. We report our MD simulation results of the crystal structures, coordination environments of Na+ and K+, and the polytypes of birnessite and compare them with available experimental results. The simulation results well reproduced experimental lattice parameters and provided atomic level information for the interlayer cation and water molecule sites that are difficult to distinguish in X-ray experiments. We also report that the polytype of the Mn octahedral sheets is identical between Na- and K-birnessite, but the cation positions differ from each other, demonstrating a correlation between the coordination environment of the interlayer cations and the crystal lattice parameters. This study shows that MD simulations are very promising in elucidating ion exchange reactions of birnessite.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the geology-related contents in the 1st~7th elementary science curriculum. Our analysis was based on the analytical frameworks of geology-related contents (the structure of the contents, the amount of teaming, the contents of the experimental activities, the transitions of the terminology, and the change in the number of illustrations). The results are as follows: 1. Consistently covered contents were limited to weathering of the rock and soil, igneous rock, sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock, and the change of the earth's, fold and fault, earthquake and volcano, geologic stratum and fossil. 2. The geological contents account for (average), 11.5% (maximum), and 5.1% (minimum) of the elementary science curriculum. Most contents covered in the curriculum were rock and soil, and the change of the earth's surface. 3. Continuously covered experimental contents were the weathering and soil, igneous rock, change of the earth's surface, geologic stratum and fossil. 4. The terminology on the rock was the most frequently changed. Whenever the curriculum changed, the addition, deletion, or renaming of terminology led to confusions. 5. In terms of the transition of illustrations, the pictures replaced the figures or diagrams as the representative illustration methods as the science or the textbook compilation skill develope. The cartoons or tables were also used increasingly in order to help the children to understand and pay attention to study.

  • The equilibrium pressure-temperature curve of the reaction: 6 Ca$_2$Al$_3$(OH)Si$_3$O$_{12}$=6 CaAl$_2$Si$_2$O$_{8}$+2 Ca$_3$Al$_2$Si$_3$O$_{12}$+Al$_2$O$_3$+3 H$_2$O zoisite anorthite grossularite corundum was experimentally determined using both externally and internally heated pressure vessels in the pressure range of 2-4 kbar. Synthetic zoisite, anorthite, grossularite and corundum were used as starting materials. Starting materials were synthesized at 13-16 kbar using the piston-cylinder apparatus. The dehydration temperature of zoisite at 2 kbar is 550${\pm}$12$^{\circ}C$ and at 4 kbar is 575${\pm}$20$^{\circ}C$. Low thermal stability of synthetic zoisite relative to natural zoisite at 4 kbar is attributed to the structural disorder of synthetic anorthite.

  • Measurements of phase identification and degree of orientation for fine-grained (about 0.3 mm in diameter) minerals in rock samples performed by micro-area X-ray diffractometer.$Al_{2}SiO_{5}$ polymorphs (andalusite, kyanite and sillimanite) were chosen for the measurements and target minerals were existed on thin sections. Micro-area X-ray diffractometer is composed of 3(${\omega}\;{\chi}\;{\phi}$)-circle oscillating goniometer and position sensitive proportional counter (PSPC). $CuK_{\alpha}$ radiation was used as X-ray source and a pin hole ($50\;\mu\textrm{m}$$ in diameter) collimator was selected to focus radiation X-ray onto the target minerals. Phase identification and diffracted X-ray peak indexing were carried out by 3(${\omega}\;{\chi}\;{\phi}$)-circle oscillation measurement. Then, 2(${\omega}\;{\phi}$)-circle oscillation measurement was made for the purpose of searching the prevailing lattice plane of the minerals on thin section surface. Finally, for a selected peak by 2-circle oscillation measurement, X-ray pole figure measurement was executed for the purpose of check the degree of orientation of the single lattice direction and examine its pole distribution. As a result of 3-circle oscillation measurement, it was possible that phase identification among $Al_{2}SiO_{5}$ polymorphs. And from the results of 2-circle oscillation measurement and X-ray pole figure measurement, we recognized that poles of andalusite (122), kyanite (200) and sillimanite (310) lattice plances were well developed with direction normal to each mineral surface plane respectively. Therfore, the measurements used with micro-area X-ray diffractometer in this study will be a useful tool of phase identification and degree of orientation measurement for fine-grained rock forming minerals.

  • The primary utilization of recently improved (U-Th)/He thermochronometry is to reveal the low-T thermal histories of shallow crustal sections or transient episodes (such as wildfires or meteorite impacts) because of the high sensitivity of He diffusion to temperature in host minerals. In this contribution, we present reviews and perspectives regarding how this method can be used to characterize the ejection-related shock metamorphism of Martian meteorites. The temperature conditions of shock metamorphism can be constrained through shock recovery experiments, paleomagnetism, and $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ and (U-Th)/He dating. The most reliable constraints can be deduced when these independent approaches are combined. However, the thermal history of the ALH84001 Martian meteorite has been under serious debate because the different methods have yielded contrasting results. Recent work has shown how single-grain (U-Th)/He and $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ dating, two noble-gas based thermochronometries with different T sensitivities, can be used to resolve this issue, providing a good example for future research on other meteorites.

  • In granite quarry, stones are generally quarried along easily separating planes called as 'rock cleavage'. Because orientation and characteristics of the rock cleavage are directly involved with easy quarrying, it is the most important factor on selecting a direction of digging. Using AMS (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility), we attempt to interpret rock fabrics in Geochang Granite Stone (JS, SD, AR, GD, BW, MD quarry) and discuss about determination of rock cleavages and correlation between the rock fabrics and cleavages. Based on mean susceptibility, thermo-susceptibility curves, and hysteresis parameters, Ti-poor MD and/or PSD magnetites are the main contributor to AMS of the granite stones. The systematic magnetic foliations with sub-vertical dip angle are developed in the whole granite quarries. In most of the granite quarries, the magnetic foliations are significantly consistent with grain plane. In the BW quarry, which has higher $P_J$ values than the others, the magnetic foliations coincide exceptionally with rift plane. These results suggest that rock cleavages in granite stone are related to rock fabrics meaning shape and spatial arrangement of crystals. Magnetic fabrics analysis using AMS method, therefore, can be a quantitative and effective tool for determination of rock cleavages in granite quarry.
