An Empirical Analysis on Market Power and Productivity in the Korean Medical Service Industry (한국 의료서비스산업의 시장지배력과 생산성에 관한 실증분석)

  • This paper establishes the empirical model based on Hall's(1990) and Basu' s(1996) models, estimates the five types of productivity in the medical service industry over the period 1975:1-2010:4, and analyzes the cyclicality of measured productivities and their correlations with the industrial real wage. The empirical results are summarized as the followings. First, there proved to be substantial market power in pricing and returns to scale in production for the medical service industry. Second, the three types of productivity among 5 types showed to be procyclical. Third, the average labor productivity, the original Solow residual, and the cost-based Solow residual are expected to provide reasonable indexes in analyzing the relationship between productivity and real wage.

Empirical Study on Double Discrimination on the Elderly with Disability in Labor Market -Focusing on Employment Discrimination and Wage Discrimination of Wage Earners- (고령장애인의 노동시장 이중차별 실증적 분석 -임금노동자의 고용차별과 임금차별을 중심으로-)

  • This study aimed at empirically analysing the double discrimination on the elderly with disabilities due to both age and disabilities in the labor market. To achieve this research goal, real employment probabilities and hourly wages of the elderly disabled(below "ED") were compared with those of the young disabled(below "YD") and those of the elderly non-disabled(below "END") to calculate empirical differentials between ED's and YD's, and ED's and END's. The differential decompositions between groups were applied by the Oaxaca(1973). The study results were as followings. First, the real gaps of the employment probabilities between ED and YD only appeared at the regular jobs and the gaps due to the characteristics between ED and YD were bigger than those due to the age discrimination. Second, on the contrary, the gaps of the hourly wages were caused by age discrimination more than characteristics between YD and ED. Third, it was not true that the elderly with disabilities take double discriminations in the labor market. It is therefore required to give the additional incentives to ED workers with government subsidies of employment promotion for the disabled provided. Second, it is proposed that the integrations the employment policies for the disabled with those for the aged because the disability as dependent valuable didn't have statistically significant effects on the employment probabilities and the hourly wage levels.

A Study on Effective Operation of Wage Peak System in Korean Enterprises (임금피크제의 효과적 운용방안)

  • Korea has entered into an aging society at an exceptionally high speed. Increasing aged workers give pressure on Korean companies with seniority based pay system with labor costs. The wage peak system has been introduced to Korean companies as an alternative to early retirements. The wage peak system currently adopted in Korea is mainly the aging-limit-security model. But in the future we should actively adopt the employment-extension model. To operate wage peak system successfully, I suggest introduction of the individual wage peak system, development of suitable jobs for the aged, selective application by job classification, incentive graded by performance evaluation, and working hour reduction with the decreased rate of wage.

Structural Vector Error Correction Model for Korean Labor Market Data (구조적 오차수정모형을 이용한 한국노동시장 자료분석)

  • We use a structural vector error correction model of the labor market to investigate the effect of shocks to Korean unemployment. We associate technology, labor demand, labor supply, and wage-setting shocks with equations for productivity, employment, unemployment, and real wages, respectively. Subsequently, labor demand and supply shocks have significant long-run and contemporaneous effects on unemployment, respectively.

Empirical Analysis on the Effects of Input Factor Prices on the Export Performance in Korean Manufacturing Industries (생산요소가격 변동과 제조산업의 수출성과에 관한 실증연구)

  • The purpose of the paper is to suggest the empirical evidences for the effects of factor prices on the export performance in the Korean manufacturing industries during the period 1975:1-2016:4. The paper is to set up the error correction model derived from the autoregressive distributed lag scheme and to estimate the factor price elasticities of export in the 8 manufacturing industries. The real wage, interest and import price index elasticities of export all were estimated to be statistically significant at 1% level in the most industries with showing negative signs as expected. And the real wage elasticity proved to likely be smaller as the industries become more capital-intensive while the import price index elasticity tended to become larger in industries with larger ratio of imported intermediate goods to output. The empirical results suggest that the declines in input factor prices since the foreign exchange crisis in the end of 1997 have positive effects on the export performance in the Korean manufacturing industries.

  • This study investigates the structural change of wage determination within internal labor market that have occurred around the financial crisis in 1997 by using the personnel data(1996~2000) of a Korean large firm. We take the effect of performance-based pay system to apply on wage determination of workers using Mincerian earnings function estimation. After introducing the annual salary system in the firm, we did not find the fact that the wage effect of seniority decreases, but we found the wage effect of relative evaluation ratings increases. Then, this study identifies the importance of the reward strategy of firm in Korean internal labor market. Finally, we have concluded that although the firm acknowledged the positive effects of performance-based HRM practices, we have not obtained enough evidence on the transformation into such practices because the seniority-based HRM has been traditionally prevalent in the Korean internal labor market.

The Corrections of Errors in the Estimations on the Nonstandard Workers Scale by an Empirical Analysis of Bogus Self-employment in Korea (한국의 가짜 자영업 추정을 통해서 본 비정규 근로자 규모의 오류)

  • The aim of this study is to reveal errors in the estimations on the nonstandard workers scale which have resulted from little consideration for bogus self-employment. Bogus self-employment means disguised employment relationships that are considered to be self-employed workers even though they have inherent subordination. The methods of previous studies estimate that the bogus self-employed workers are excluded from estimations because they are not workers in principle. We analyze the scale of the bogus self-employments using the empirical data [the Korean Welfare Panel of 2008-2013(six wave panel)] to re-estimate the scale of non-standard workers. In 2013, the year of the last wave, the percentage of the bogus self-employment was high, the proportion of them is 28.5% among self-employment without owning a place of business. Our results expect the number of contract workers from re-analysis would be over 740 thousand when reflecting on the predictive value in the actual number of paid workers. In conclusion, it is necessary to apply reasonable methods of analysis concerning the scope and scale of the nonstandard workers for the sake of coping with measures against the problem of nonstandard workers. The aim of this study is to reveal the estimation error on nonstandard workers' scale which are resulted from having no consideration for bogus self-employment. Bogus self-employment means disguised employment relationship that is considered as self-employment workers even though they have inherent subordination. A Study on the effect of the experience of Job-Training on Youth Employees' Wage (직업교육훈련 경험이 청년층 취업자의 임금에 미치는 영향)

  • This study verified the effect of the experience of job-training on youth employees' wage by analyzing panal data. The study results showed that the objective of job-training(enhancing job performance, ${\beta}=.336$), satisfaction of job-training(${\beta}=.-.256$) and the type of job-training(cyber lecture, ${\beta}=.334$) significantly affected youth employees' wage. Also, age, education, marital status, hour of job-training, objective of job-training and satisfaction of job-training significantly affected the differences between groups. This study provided practical implication to prepare effective job-training policy by confirming the effect of the experience of job-training on youth employees' wage and verifying the effectiveness of job-training.
