Sphingobacterium sp. SW-09 Effectively Degrades Phenanthrene, a Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon, in a Soil Microcosm (Sphingobacterium sp. SW-09에 의한 토양환경에서의 다환 방향족탄화수소인 페난스렌의 분해)

  • We isolated a potent phenanthrene-degrading bacterium from oil-contaminated soils of Suzhou, China, and assessed the potential use of these bacteria for bioremediation of soils contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a microcosm. Based on 16S rDNA sequencing, we identified this bacteria as Sphigobacterium sp. SW-09. By PCR amplification, we also identified catechol 2,3-dioxygenase genes (nahH genes) mediating PAH degradation. Staphylococcus sp. KW-07, which has been identified in our previous study, showed potential for use in bioremediation of oil-contaminated soils. In this experiment, we compared the rate of phenanthrene-degradation between Staphylococcus sp. KW-07 and Sphingobacterium sp. SW-09 in a microcosm condition. Newly isolated Sphingobacterium sp. SW-09 showed a higher phenanthrene-degradation rate than that of Staphylococcus sp. KW-07 in soil microcosms. Together, our results suggest that the Sphingobacterim sp. SW-09 strain isolated from the Suzhou area may also be useful in bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soils.

  • 라오스의 Houay Pano 유역은 상업적 조림으로 인해 2011년부터 2013년까지 급속한 토지이용 변화를 겪어왔다. 본 연구는 이러한 토지이용변화가 박테리아 거동에 어떠한 영향을 주는지 이해하기 위해 Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) 모형을 활용한 박테리아 거동 모델링을 수행하였다. SWAT 모형은 수치 표고 모델, 토양 특성, 토지 이용 등의 정보를 종합하여, 유역 내수량 및 수질의 변화를 모의할 수 있는 모형으로, 본 연구는 대표적인 분원성 지표 세균 (Fecal Indicator Bacteria)인 대장균 (Escheichia coli, E. coli)을 대상으로 모델링을 수행하였다. SWAT 모형은 지표면 위 박테리아를 1)식물 위, 2)토양 용액상, 3)토양 입자상으로 구분하여 모의한다. 각 상태로 분할된 박테리아는 소멸 (die-off), 씻김 (wash-off), 침투, 표면 유출을 통한 수계로의 이동 등의 단계를 통하여 유역 내에서 거동한다. 본 연구는 서로 다른 기후의 영향을 배제하기 위해 각 토지이용 시나리오를 (2011, 2012, 2013) 실제 기후 조건과 동일 기후(2011-2013 평균) 조건으로 분류하여 분석하였다. 실제 기후 조건에서 SWAT 모형은 표면 유출, 토사 유출, E. coli 거동에 대해 2011년부터 2012년까지 감소, 2012년부터 2013년까지 증가로 모두 동일한 양상을 모의하였다. 이는 강수량의 양상과 동일한 것으로, 강수량이 표면 유출의 양을 결정하고, 달라진 표면 유출에 따라 토사 유출과 E. coli 거동이 결정되기 때문이다. 하지만 동일 기후 조건에서는, E. coli 거동 동인인 표면 유출과 토사 유출이 비교적 일정해짐에 따라, 각 상태로 분할된 박테리아의 초기 부하량값이 E. coli 거동을 결정하는 주된 요인임을 확인 할 수 있었다. 따라서 초기 부하량 분할에 활용되는 엽면적 지수 (Leaf Area Index)와 분배계수 (BACTKDDB)의 정확도가 요구된다. 추가적으로 본 연구는 박테리아의 유입원인 비료 모델링과, LAI를 활용한 박테리아 초기 부하량 산정, 토양 특성 변수와 토지 이용 변수의 분리, 지하수를 통한 박테리아 거동 등을 중심으로 SWAT 모형의 한계점과 개선점을 제시하였으며, 본 연구 결과는 토지이용변화가 박테리아 거동에 주는 영향을 모형적으로 이해하고, 또한 추후 박테리아 모델링 개발에 도움을 줄 것으로 예상된다.

  • The electrical characterstic of earth is the most dominant factor for grounding design and an earth is typically represented by a uniform medium with the specific earth resistivity, which is unique for a specific site. For a hand-working grounding design using a specific earth resistivity requires a process converting a real earth of complex medium into a simple uniform medium In this paper, we suggest a procedure to convert a multi-layered earth s into a simpler uniform earth for grounding design of Myanmar 500[kV] transmission towers.

  • Impervious surface affects urban climate, flood, and water pollution. With a higher paved rate, expanded heat containing capacity of buildings and roads raises atmospheric temperature, and increased quantity of the outflowed water brings flood during a heavy downpour. Moreover, increased non-point source pollutant load is accountable for water pollution. In this regard, it is definitely important to research and keep monitoring the current situation of paved surface, which influences urban ecosystem, disaster and pollution. In fact, collecting information on urban paved surface, which requires the time and expense, is very difficult due to its complicate structure. In order to solve the problem, this study suggested a method to utilize satellite image data for efficient survey on the current condition of paved surface. It analyzed the paved surface condition of Anyang-si by using IKONOS image and discussed the usefulness and limitation of this method.

A Study of Analytical Methods for Oils in Contaminated Soil (오염 토양중의 유류 분석법)

  • To analyze of oils in contaminated soils, it is necessary to classify of oils accurately and it has to be selected suitable extraction method and instrumental analysis method in according to the character of sample. In this study, oils are classified into three groups-gasoline, diesel and kerosene-we consider extraction methods and quantitative analysis method of these oils using GC/MS. As the analysis example of real sample, we analyze some gasolines and diesels of some oil refining company and calculate BTEX in gasoline and saturated n-hydrocarbons in diesel. And also, we study the representative quantitative method of each kind of oils.

  • 지구온난화로 인한 기후변화로 산불 발생이 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 이로 인해 무강우기간의 증가, 기온의 상승, 습도 감소 등의 문제가 발생하고 있다. 이중 기온의 상승과 습도의 감소는 산불과 큰 연관성이 있다. 따뜻하고 건조한 날씨는 토양수분의 감소로 이어지며, 이는 곧 식물의 활성도의 감소로 이어진다. 봄철 식물의 활성도가 감소하게 되면 자연스레 산불 발생 위험도가 높아지기 마련이다. 이러한 현상은 국내에서도 관찰 가능하다. 따뜻하고 건조한 국내 겨울철 날씨는 봄철 토양수분의 감소와 직결되며, 건조해진 토양수분으로 인해 봄철인 3월~5월 산불 발생 확률이 증가하게 된다. 실제로 최근 10년간 국내에서 산불이 많이 발생한 계절은 봄철이며, 산불로 인한 피해 면적 및 피해 금액이 가장 큰 기간도 봄철이다. 따라서 봄철 산불에 대한 각별한 주의가 요구 되어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내 유역을 대상으로 산불 위험도 지수에 대한 평가를 진행하고자 한다. 이에 PRMS 모형을 이용해 봄철 토양수분을 모의하여 산불 위험도 지수와 토양수분의 상관성을 나타내고자 한다. 또한, 산불 발생 건수를 활용하여 산불 위험도 지수에 대한 적절성을 평가하고자 한다.

Nitrogen Release and Polymer Degradation Properties of Polymer-Coated Urea Fertilizer in Soil (고분자 피복요소비료의 질소용출 및 토양중 분해특성)

  • Nitrogen releasing characteristics of polymer-coated urea(PCU) that made acrylic synthetic resins were studied in incubated soil, water and paddy soil. Also, their correlations and degradation patterns of coating material were tested. Releasing rate of nitrogen from PCU decreased with increasing coating rate. N001(coating rate 8.5%) and N003(coasting rater 6.3%) were low releasing amount at the early stage, whereas N005(coating rate 4.8%) was released over 80% within 20 days. Relationship of the releasing rate between incubated soil($25^{\circ}C$) and paddy soil could be described as follows : $Y=-0.0011X^2+2.2931X-50.264(R^2=0.9884)$ for N001, $Y=-0.0016X^2+1.1587X+5.5064(R^2=0.9805)$ for N003 and $Y=-0.03X^2+6.499X-243.22(R^2=0.9422)$ for N005, respectively (Y: release rate at field condition, X: experiment period). Relationship of the releasing rate between incubated water($30^{\circ}C$) and paddy soil can be described as follows : $Y=0.0011X^2+2.2601X-25.329(R^2=0.9884)$ for N001, $Y=-0.0306X^2+4.4994X-76.307(R^2=0.955)$ for N003 and $Y=-0.0164X^2+3.7764X-108.22(R^2=0.9422)$ for N005. After 150 days, coating materials of N001, N003, and N005 in incubated soil were degraded approximately 23%, 22% and 15%, respectively. Also The scanning electron microscope examination of coating material revealed that particle surface became gradually shattered with the time after the soil treatment.

Surfactant Enhanced In-Situ Soil Flushing Pilot Test for the Soil and Groundwater Remediation in an Oil Contaminated Site (계면활성제 원위치 토양 세정법을 이용한 유류 오염 지역 토양.지하수 정화 실증 시험)

  • Surfactant enhanced in-situ soil flushing was performed to remediate the soil and groundwater at an oil contaminated site, where had been used as a military vehicle repair area for 40 years. A section from the contaminated site (4.5 m $\times$ 4.5 m $\times$ 6.0 m) was selected for the research, which was composed of heterogeneous sandy and silt-sandy soils with average $K_d$ of 2.0$\times$$10^{-4}$cm/sec. Two percent of sorbitan monooleate (POE 20) and 0.07% of iso-prophyl alcohol were mixed for the surfactant solution and 3 pore volumes of surfactant solution were injected to remove oil from the contaminated section. Four injection wells and two extraction wells were built in the section to flush surfactant solution. Water samples taken from extraction wells and the storage tank were analyzed on a gas-chromatography (GC) for TPH concentration in the effluent with different time. Five pore volumes of solution were extracted while TPH concentration in soil and groundwater at the section were below the Waste Water Discharge Limit (WWDL). The effluent TPH concentration from wells with only water flushing was below 10 ppm. However, the effluent concentration using surfactant solution flushing increased to 1751 ppm, which was more than 170 times compared with the concentration with only water flushing. Total 18.5 kg of oil (TPH) was removed from the soil and groundwater at the section. The concentration of heavy metals in the effluent solution also increased with the increase of TPH concentration, suggesting that the surfactant enhanced in-situ flushing be available to remove not only oil but heavy metals from contaminated sites. The removal efficiency of surfactant enhanced in-situ flushing was investigated at the real contaminated site in Korea. Results suggest that in-situ soil flushing could be a successful process to remediate contaminated sites distributed in Korea.

A Field Study on Remediation of Gasoline Contaminated Site by Soil Vapor Extraction (토양증기추출법에 의한 휘발유 오염토양의 현장복원 연구)

  • The effects of operating condition of soil vapor extraction system and the characteristics of site on the remediation of oil contaminated soil were investigated. Thorough investigation showed that the site was contaminated with gasoline leaked from underground storage tank and the maximum concentration of BTEX and TPH were 1,081 ppm and 5,548 ppm respectively. The leaked gasoline were diffused to 6m deep and the area and volume of the polluted soil were assumed to 170$m^2$ and 1,000$\textrm{m}^3$respectively. The site were consisted of three different vertitical layers, the top reclaimed sandy soil between the earth surface and 3~4m deep, middle silty sand between 3~4m and 6m deep, and the bottom bedrock below the 6m deep. The air pemeability of soil was measured to 1.058-1.077$\times$10$^{-6}$ $\textrm{mm}^2$ by vacuum pump tests. The groundwater which level was 3~4m deep was observed in some areas of this site. The soil vapor extraction system which had 7.5 HP vacuum pump and 8 extraction wells was constructed in this site and operated at 8 hrs/day for 100 days. The BTEX was removed with above 90% efficiency where no groundwater and silty sand were observed. On the contrary, the efficiency of BTEX and TPH were dramatically decreased where groundwater and silty sand were observed. The flow rate of soil air induced by soil vapor extraction system was reduced in deeper soil.

Land Suitability Assessment by Combining Classification Results by Climate and Soil Information Using the Most Limiting Characteristic Method in the Republic of Korea (기후 및 토양 정보에서 최대저해인자법을 이용한 재배적지 구분의 통합에 관한 연구)

  • Land suitability assessment for apples and pears was conducted with soil and climate information in South Korea. In doing so, we intended to preserve land and increase the productivity by providing valuable information regarding where more suitable areas for apples or pears are located. We used soil classification driven by soil environmental information system developed by National Institute of Agricultural Science, RDA, and also used climate classification in digital agro-climate map database for which is made by National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science. We combined both soil and climate classification results using a most-limiting characteristic method. The combined results showed very similar patterns with the results by classification based on soil information. Such results seem to come from the fact that the classification results by soil relatively lower than those by climate information. The results by soil classification seem to be too downgraded and checking if the final classification ranges in soil are reasonably made is strongly required. Although the most limiting characteristic method had been used widely in land suitability assessment, adapting the method based on results by soil and climate can be influenced by one downgraded factor. Therefore, alternative ways should be carefully considered for increasing the accuracy.
