Hospice and palliative care in Taiwan has been growing continuously. The 2015 Quality of Death index, as rated by the Economist Intelligence Unit, ranked Taiwan first among Asian countries and sixth in the world. In this review article, we highlight three particular areas that might have contributed to this success; the laws and regulations, spiritual care and research network. Finally, we discuss the future challenges and prospects for Taiwanese encounters. A systemic review was conducted with the keywords "hospice palliative care Taiwan" using PubMed. The passing of the "Natural Death Act" in 2000 set the example and established a landmark for patient autonomy in Asia; it guarantees the patient's right to request that medical staff do not resuscitate (DNR) them and to reject other futile medical treatments at the end of their life, thus reflecting the importance of palliative care from the policy perspective. In 2015, Taiwan passed another pioneering law entitled the "Patient Autonomy Act". This law states that a patient may decline medical treatment according to his/her own will. Taiwanese indigenous spiritual care was launched in 2000. It requires a Buddhist Chaplain to successfully complete a training program consisting of lectures, as well as bedside practicum before applying Buddhist practices to end-of-life care. The Japan-Korea-Taiwan research network was established for the purpose of enabling collaborative research for the East-Asian collaborative cross-cultural Study to Elucidate the Dying process (EASED) cohort. With consensus from the government and society to make it a priority, hospice and palliative medicine in Taiwan has been growing steadily.
The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' perceptions on chemistry subjects: reasons for choosing chemistry, learning volume and content difficulty, interests, teaching/learning methods, preferable classes etc. A total of 1,087 students who took chemistry subjects at 126 high schools by proportional stratified sampling were voluntarily participated in the survey. The main reasons the students chose chemistry subjects were interests and interests in chemistry, foundation to science, relevance to college majors, and so on. Students recognized that the learning volume and content difficulty as normal level was about 60%. Reasons why chemistry was difficult was that, although there was a difference in degree, chemistry was difficult in itself and had too much things to memorize. In the case of interests in chemistry subjects, students of 43.9% of Chemistry I and 52.0% of Chemistry II recognized the level as normal. The reason why not interested in chemistry subjects was that it was the nature of chemistry contents, or students had neither interests and enjoyment of chemistry nor foundation for chemistry. Classes were mostly lectures but the students preferred mainly experimental activities, or explanation with real-life examples or science stories. The frequency of experimental activities was found to be 1 to 5 times per semester, or not experimented. Research and efforts will be necessary to improve classes and environments for students' experimental activities.
In order to teach the accumulated knowledge of nanoscience, nanoengineering and nanotechnology to graduate school students and young scientists with the sense of public engagement, Osaka University started from 2004 to prepare and offer various kinds of education and training programs such as trans-disciplinary graduate-school minor program, evening course refresher program, short-term international research training program, etc. It offers a series of lectures, partly broadcasted live to satellite classrooms. In addition, the students can join intensive hands-on training programs using modern facilities, allowing them to design, fabricate, measure, characterize and functionalize nanomaterials and nanodevices. In addition, there are four specially designed lectures and research training programs aimed for nanocommunication including social, legal and ethical relationship: "Nanotechnology Career-up Lectures", "Social Engagement on Nanotechnology", "Road Map Design on Nanotechnology", and "Project-Aimed Learning and Training Programs (PAL)". The outline of the whole programs is described together with the specialized programs for nanocommunication.

This study reports on the development of a dietary education program for Korean young adults in single-person households. The 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey (2016-2018) was used to compare and analyze the dietary behavior of single-person households and multi-person households, and an online survey was conducted on 350 young adults (age 19-39 years) living in Seoul. According to the analysis, single-person households had higher rates of breakfast and eating out than multi-person households, and significantly lower average intake of energy and nutrients (p<0.05). In particular, in the case of single-person households, the lower the frequency of cooking at home, the higher the rate of breakfast and the higher the frequency of eating out and delivery food (p<0.05). Based on the survey, a dietary education program for young adults single-person households was developed by applying the DESIGN six-step procedure and social cognitive theory as a conceptual model. The first session consisted of the health and economic benefits of home-cooked meals, the second session of the importance of the breakfast and the effect of exercise in life, the third session of the importance of balanced nutrition and the principles of a healthy diet, the fourth session of food safety and storage, and the fifth session of social dining. Each session was composed of a combination of theoretical lectures to motivate 'more making and eating healthy home-cooked meals' and cooking practice for improving behavioral performance.

In order to improve the quality of textbooks, this study analyzed seven informatics textbooks published based on the 2015 revised curriculum. Content analysis was used to analyze the organization system of these textbooks. Learning objectives of the textbooks were also analyzed according to Anderson's taxonomy of educational objectives. Furthermore, a textbook satisfaction survey, in which textbook selection criteria were applied, was given out to preliminary teachers. The results showed that the textbooks were similarly organized, centered on practice, activities, differentiated learning, and small group learning. However, the number of pages varies considerably for each chapter. After analyzing learning objectives of the textbooks, it was found that in terms of cognitive processes, 'understanding' (53%) was the highest item and 'analyzing' (16%) the second highest; in terms of type of knowledge, 'conceptual' (42%) and 'procedural' (31%) accounted for the two highest categories; in terms of cognitive domains, there has been a significant increase in 'analyzing' and 'creating' facets for learning objectives of these new versions of textbooks as compared to those of previously existed textbooks. In the satisfaction survey on a 5-point Likert scale, 'the accuracy and fairness of the content' had the highest points at 4.21 among four scale items. In this study, the improvement of the textbook is proposed based on the findings from this analysis.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety of nursing students during fundamentals of nursing practicum in Korea. Methods: This study used a descriptive design. A total of 106 nursing instructors teaching fundamentals of nursing longer than one year participated in this study. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from July 24 to August 28, 2018. The questionnaires consisted of general characteristics, characteristics of fundamentals of nursing course, physical and emotional safety issues during fundamentals of nursing practicum, and obtaining an informed consent prior to practicum. Results: The average number of physical safety accidents during practicum of fundamentals of nursing in the past 5 years was $1.12{\pm}2.44$. The most common safety accident was punctured wound. The mean score of the participants' stress on physical safety accidents was $3.53{\pm}1.12$ out of 5. The average number of emotional safety accidents of fundamentals of nursing practicum in the past 5 years was $1.05{\pm}2.72$. The mean score of stress on emotional safety accident was $3.00{\pm}1.09$ out of 5. We found that 47.2% of the participants obtained an oral consent or a written consent for safety of fundamentals of nursing practicum. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that it is necessary to establish safety strategies for fundamentals of nursing practicum for nursing students.
This study is a meta-analysis study conducted to integrate and analyze the results of flip-learning studies for Korean nursing students. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, CINAHL, and Korean databases. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and Non-Randomized controlled trials (Non-RCTs) evaluating the effects of flipped learning for Korean nursing students were included. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects meta-analysis. The entire effect size in flipped learning was big in effect size (SMD = 1.21; 95% CI = 0.84 to 1.63; I2 = 93.9; n = 23) compared to the control groups. The analysis results of subgroups according to the classification of Bloom showed that flipped learning was found to have a significant effect on psychomotor domain, cognitive domain, and affective domain. A total of 10 literature analyses, this meta-analysis showed that flipped learning on Korean nursing students is effective in psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domain than the traditional teaching method. The flip learning can be integrated into theoretical and practical nursing education to improve the academic performance of nursing students.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between wrong postures and pain during scaling and encourage dental hygienists and students to exercise scaling in a good position. After obtaining informed consent, 107 students (3rd and 4th grade students) who had an experience with scaling practice were enrolled. The questionnaire included three general items, four items related to the posture during scaling, and nine items related to pain management (total 16 items), for which the five-point Likert scale was used. Through the questionnaire, we examined the preference of posture during scaling, posture education during scaling, pain in each part during scaling, pain management, and pain management method. In the scaling exercise, 86.3% of the subjects were instructed on the correct posture, and 87.9% of the subjects perceived the possibility of inducing musculoskeletal disorders based on the scaling posture. The percentage of subjects who responded that they performed scaling in the correct posture was 33.6% and that of subjects who answered that they bowed or turned their head by more than 15° was 64.4%. Further, 45.7% of the subjects answered that they bent their shoulders, and 29.9% of the subjects answered that their postures were not parallel to the floor. Pain during scaling was still higher when they bent their head, they bent their waist, and they bent their wrist (p<0.05). During scaling, pain was most frequent in the fingers and hands (15%), followed by the neck (14%), shoulders (11.2%), waist (9.3%), and feet and legs (2.8%). The percentage of subjects who performed regular exercise (or stretching) to prevent pain was 29.9% and that of subjects who managed pain after scaling was 12.1%. Further, exercise (24.6%) and self-massage (20.3%) were highly used as the pain management methods, and the school practice was preferred to education media for pain management (79.4%). In the scaling practice, there was a training on pain management, but the frequency of practicing in the wrong posture was high. Moreover, pain increased upon practicing in an incorrect posture. Therefore, more in-depth and systematic education on the necessity and method of musculoskeletal disease management during scaling is required.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the application and utility of emergency rescue education and derive limitations, improvements and development directions of university education based on the field experience of 119 emergency medical technician(EMT)s. The research subjects were six new 119 emergency medical technician(EMT)s within three years of starting their first-aid service in the field. After conducting in-depth narrative interviews, the analysis was performed using Colaizzi method. The 82 formulated meanings were derived from significant statements. From formulated meanings, 23 themes, 4 theme clusters, 2 categories were identified. The four theme clusters were 'The effectiveness of university education', 'The limitations of university education', 'The direction of improvement in educational methodology' and 'The direction of improvement in educational contents. University education has been helpful overall, but limitations are observed at the same time, suggesting that it should be developed through the improvement of educational methodologies (i.e. problem-based learning, field case review, education through role-playing, simulation education, strengthening skill ect.) and educational content (i.e. training tailored to the field, education focused on trauma or cardiac arrest, expansion of triage education in disaster management, reinforcement of education on-site safety, education on special patients, diverse guidance and faculty for different perspectives).
Gadolinium, commonly used as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is discharged into aquatic environments without removal after treatment in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) because of its high stability. In this study, we collected water samples from Suyeong WWTP, Busan, to investigate the dissolved rare earth element (REE) removal capacity of each wastewater treatment process and to evaluate the discharge of anthropogenic Gd (Gdanth) from effluents. As wastewater passed through each stage of treatment, the concentrations of light REEs (La-Eu) decreased, whereas those of heavy REEs (Tb-Lu) were relatively consistent. Negative Sm anomalies (<1) were observed in several samples, indicating that Sm can be removed by adsorption onto particles or phosphate during the biological removal process. Positive Gd anomalies (149±50, n=9) were observed in all samples. The ratios of Gdanth concentrations to measured Gd concentrations in all wastewater treatment processes were higher than 97%. This indicates that Gdanth was discharged to the Suyeong River without removal during the wastewater treatment process. Considering the daily treatment capacity in each process, the total flux of Gdanth was estimated to be 259 mmol/day. Our results suggest that mid- and/or long-term monitoring of Gd is needed because Gdanth is continuously discharged into Suyeong Bay through WWTPs.
