The Role of Spreadsheet in Model Refinement in Mathematical Modeling Activity (수학적 모델링에서 스프레드시트 환경이 수학적 모델의 정교화 과정에 미치는 역할)

  • In mathematical modeling activity modeling process is usually an iterative process. When model can not be solved, the model needs to be simplified by treating some variables as constants, or by ignoring some variables. On the other hand, when the results from the model are not precise enough, the model needs to be refined by considering additional conditions. In this study we investigate the role of spreadsheet model in model refinement and modeling process. In detail, we observed that by using spreadsheet model students can solve model which can not be solved in paper-pencil environment. And so they need not go back to model simplification process but continue model refinement. By transforming mathematical model to spreadsheet model, the students can predict or explain the real word situations directly without passing the mathematical conclusions step in modeling process.

Korean Mathematics Textbook Analysis: Focusing on a Context of Yungbokhap and on Ways of Integration (중학교 1학년 수학교과서의 실세계 기반 과제 분석: 융복합교육의 맥락과 방식을 중심으로)

  • This study is based on the perspective that tasks in local and global contexts are important to raise students' ability to mathematically analyze and solve diverse phenomena and social issues as members of future civil society. Therefore, this study analyzes 880 real world tasks from 13 types of 7th grade textbook based on 2009 revised Curriculum. As a result of analyzing tasks by using 3 types of context category and 9 types of ways as analysis framework and allowing repetitive coding, personal context was most frequent in the context of Younbokhap. In level of Integrated ways of Yungbokhap, sequential model in which other subjects' topics were not directly related to mathematics problem or presented in simple description is most frequent. The result shows that the textbooks are too limited to develop learner's competencies. Through such analysis result, we discuss about the necessity and methods of developing tasks which allow learners to study further in future society and global context and which connect other subjects' knowledge and social issue with mathematics in deeper level.

Character Animation using End-Effector (End-Effector를 이용한 캐릭터 애니메이션)

  • 본 논문에서는 실세계에서의 사용자 동작을 가상 광간의 캐릭터를 통해 나타낼 수 있는 제어방법에 대해 논한다. 사용자의 캐릭터는 스테레오 카메라 영상으로부터 얻어지는 3차원 좌표값 5개를 이용하여 표현된다. 영상에서 구하는 3차원 좌표값은 노이즈가 들어있고 불안정하므로 자연스럽고 부드럽게 변형할 수 있도록 프레임 내에서 보간 작업이 필요하다. 안정된 데이터는 신체 제약조건을 만족하는 범위에서 inverse kinematic을 이용하여 joint angle을 계산한다. 하지만 이 방법은 수학적인 계산을 통해 나온 결과이기 때문에 가끔 사용자가 원하지 않는 동작을 만들어 내는 단점을 극복해야 한다.

  • 다측면 객체모델은 개념적 데이타베이스 모델인 EA모델을 확장한 객체중심 데이타 모델로서, 여러 측면에서 관측되고 표현될 수 있는 실세계의 동일객체들을 직접 데이타베이스의 동일객체로 모델링 할 수 있도록하여 데이타베이스의 개념적 스키마 설계를 용이하게 한다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 다측면 객체모델의 기본개념들을 설명하고, 수학적 접근에 의한 형식론을 구성하였으며, 그 모델의 구성을 위한 단계적 접근방법을 소개하였다.

The Conjecture of Anti-Derivative Graph of Engineering Students (공대생의 역도함수 그래프 추측)

  • To engineering students, calculus is essential knowledges and skills as a mathematical model and give a perspective to observe phenomenon in the future industrial field. However, engineering students' calculus study tends to solve problems by only applying the mechanical calculation and mathematical results. This study aimed to make engineering students realize the importance of calculus and untypical problems, by suggesting problems that could apply the mathematical concepts and principles and even solve the actual conditions of the problems. Students conjectured the anti-derivative graphs by interpreting the given derivate problems. They showed errors in this process and the errors are contributed by their mathematics leaning styles. As a result, the task would be helpful to engineering students.

A Study of the Need for Applying Mathematical Modeling in the Elementary Schools (초등수학에서 수학적 모델링 적용 필요성에 대한 연구)

  • The present study is to focus on thinking about the possibility of using mathematical modeling in the elementary schools. As well-known, mathematical education in Korea, even though students' high achievement in mathematics, has a lot of problems regarding their attitudes toward mathematics. Mathematical modeling is regarded as playing an important role in helping improve the current problems embedded in elementary mathematics education. Thus, this study reviewed the background that mathematical modeling attracted lots of attentions by many mathematics researchers, the definitions of mathematical modeling and the similarities and differences between problem solving and mathematical modeling. In addition, the processes and main features of well-known three representative models of mathematical modeling were reviewed, and each case of research on mathematical modeling in the elementary schools in Korea and foreign countries was introduced, respectively. Finally, this study suggests that mathematical modeling needs to be dealt with in the elementary school curriculum, together with the improvement of teachers' recognition for mathematical modeling.

  • The researchers developed the teaching-learning materials for 9th grade mathematically gifted students in terms of the hypothesis that the students would have opportunity for problem solving and develop various mathematical thinking through the mathematical modeling lessons. The researchers analyzed what mathematical thinking abilities were shown on each stage of modeling process through the application of the materials. Organization of information ability appears in the real-world exploratory stage. Intuition insight ability, spatialization/visualization ability, mathematical reasoning ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the pre-mathematical model development stage. Mathematical abstraction ability, spatialization/visualization ability, mathematical reasoning ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the mathematical model development stage. Generalization and application ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the model application stage. The developed modeling assignments have provided the opportunities for mathematically-gifted students' mathematical thinking ability to develop and expand.

A Study on the Teaching and Learning of Discrete Mathematics in the 7th Mathematics Curriculum (제7차 교육과정의 이산수학 교수-학습에 관한 연구)

  • This study is a discussion of the teaching and learning of discrete mathematics in school mathematics. In this study, we summarized the importance of discrete mathematics m school mathematics. And we examined instruction methods of discrete mathematics expressed in the 7th mathematics curriculum. On the basis of analysis for teaching cases in previous studies, we proposed four suggestions to organize discrete mathematics classroom. That is as follows. First, discrete mathematics needs to be introduced as a mathematical modeling of real-world problem. Second, algorithm learning in discrete mathematics have to be accomplished with computer experiments. Third, when we solve a problem with discrete data, we need to consider discrete property of given data. Forth, discrete mathematics class must be full of investigation and discussion among students. In each suggestion, we dealt with detailed examples including educational ideas in order to helping mathematics teacher orgainzing discrete mathematics classroom.

  • The future society requires not only knowledge but also various competencies, including creativity, cooperative spirit and integrated thinking. This research develops a program for integrating mathematics and information science to enhance important mathematical competencies such as problem-solving and communication. This program does not require much prior knowledge, can be motivated using everyday language and easy-to-access tools, and is based on creative problem-solving activities with multilateral cooperation. The usefulness and rigor of mathematics are emphasized as the number of participants increases in the activities, and theoretical principles stem from the matrix theory over finite fields. Moreover, the activity highlights a connection with error-correcting codes, an important topic in information science. We expect that the real-world contexts of this program contribute to enhancing mathematical communication competence and providing an opportunity to experience the values of mathematics and that this program to be accessible to teachers since coding is not included.
