  • This study aims to inspect changes of physical expression in surfaces of both building interior and exterior in contemporary architecture. Nowadays society has transformed into more complicated framework with the development of the new media and digital technology in 21 century. Surface's expressivity has been changed with design trend and material development. Although surface study has been mainly concentrated on properties of materials and structure characters, new technology and cultural acceptance enables it extend itself to a new area with various design methods, taking its place as an important contemporary architectural element. Interior surface design is expressed with several unique methods such as optical illusion, surface exposure and spacial depth and volume, and it created dynamic space within the surface itself. In case of exterior surface, whole space seems to be designed to be coordinated with structured optical illusion as well as symbolic expression. Surface's area is extends itself with the stream of the times. This study explored the nature of surfaces with categorizing and comparing them in a various views and methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of structural expression in the works of Louis I. Kahn. Kahn's main architectural thoughts of 'what it wants to be' and 'how it was done' are important in this research because these statements act as a clue to understand the relationship between structural expression and space. 'What it wants to be' means the essence and existence of architecture and 'how it was done' shows the tectonic of architecture and construction process to enhance its presence. Kahn's emphasis of structural expression stems from the fact that structure is the logical part of whole building system rather than the concealed object for the exterior of buildings. Therefore structure of Kahn's architecture is not a structure only to support building but a mean to express his thoughts in a corporeal way. In Kahn's works, the characteristics of structural expressions are summarized as the visualization of the order in dynamics, construction process, spatial system, and the relationship between structure and light in the space.

  • This study deals with 'Sachlichkeit' , as essence of materiality that architectural building materials process, which forms the physical basis for actual building. There have beennu merous researches that deals with various elements that compose architecture, but the emphasis seemed to be concentrated on the meta-physical discussion concerning formal concept. An issue on sachlichkeit as materiality does not necessary mean to mention production process of architecture, rather it is aim of this study to seek possibility to find elements that generate architectural form, through interpreting meaning of materials as substructure generator to make architectural possible. Architectural act can be defined as a process where physical material in life is composed into architecture by the hands of architect. Material used in life is composed into architecture by the hands of architect. Material used in this process basically has neutral characteristic, so 'Sachlichkeit'solely depends on the intentions of architects. This study interprets the intention of architects through the frame of modern-basis proposed by Hilberseimer, and a result architecture is defined as an object projected by architect's subjectivity.

  • Today, in space design boundaries between spaces have become obscure and space images are changed and overlap each other. Moreover, with the digital technology creating more informational spaces with various interactions, the set up of intelligent space has been made possible in reality. As if to deny the law of physical limitation, interfaces are used as main concept in structuring and expressing the spaces. It appears once again when each section is an expressional factor of interfaces and when meanings are produced through the systemization. Here this study analyzes the hybrid action that appear in contemporary space design. At the very moment, interface emerged as an important concept, defining contemporary space design in a very different way and present interface as a new possibility in space.

  • An architecture as a creative work can be expressed through its diverse conditions, such as humanitarian and social factors, the natural environments and also the each situations of that period. Thus, architects create their work based upon the experience that they have achieved in the past as well as the informations they have accumulated over the time. By this process architects used to achieve the design they hope to aim, whether it is made intentionally or not. This means that architects used to understand their works as it have the factors of the consciousness and the unconsciousness. This research looks to achieve a new design method by finding out how architects express the tradition in contemporary architecture through a psychoanalytic point of view. Hence, this research shall be a significance if it is applied to the process of modern architectural work with tradition concepts.

  • The theme of modern architecture was various expression of dynamism and the flow of space. It was because that the space become the main theme of architecture since the late 19th century, and the space was changed from the 3rd dimension into the 4th dimensional space-time continuum. Though many avant-garde artists in the early 20th century did not understand the theory of relativity, they became conscious of the concept of space-time continuum, and tried to express the movement as the duration in time which Bergson defined. Many architects in the first machine age conceived the movement of architecture, and understand it as the dynamism of the mass and in the space. But especially, Sant'Elia and Hilberseimer expressed it as the flow of various force and vector In the metropolis as entire system. And Some architects conceived it as real movement of the building and expressed it as the rotary motion of building, movable partition and furniture, mobile prefabricated building. This study analyzed the expression of movement in architecture in the first machine age.

A Study on Expression Method and Characteristic of Transparency of the Surface in Current Commercial Space (현대 상업건축공간에 있어서 표피의 투명성 표현방법과 이미지 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study analyzes an expression method and a characteristic of transparency of a surface in commercial space, and it is to show an index of a surface design. We did image evaluation by SD method for the commercial space which directed transparency to a surface as the method. We used a factor analysis and cluster analysis to get the image characteristic and type of the expression methods. As a result, we got six following expression methods and design indexes. (1) Transparency expression of a surface by a multiple layer. (2) Transparency expression of a surface by unification with a structure. (3) Transparency expression of a surface by transparency of materials. (4) Transparency expression of a surface by a combination of various materials. (5) Transparency expression of a surface by unification of the image media. (6) Transparency expression of a surface by transparency transformation of materials. We think that it will be able to make use of these results as a design index for the surface design of a commercial space in the future.

  • 최근의 현대 건축에서는 재료의 물성과 구축성이 두드러지는 프로젝트를 많이 발견할 수 있다. 이러한 경향의 배경에는 사양한 요인들이 있을 수 있다. 그 중에서도 공간성(性)에 대한 근본적이고 회귀가 중요한 바탕이라고 할 수 있다. 피터 줌터의 건축은 현란한 조형적 효과, 표현만을 위한 기술적 장식을 사용하지 않는다. 대신 그의 건축은 장소와의 관계, 문화적 context 상에서의 맥락, 그리고 공간의 근원적인 경험을 주요한 매체로 사용한다. 그리고 이러한 특수성은 대체적으로 빛과 재료의 고유한 적용으로 나타난다. 이는 장소와 문화의 특성을 관습적인 형태나 화려한 표현으로 재현하는 것이 아니라 '공간감'의 구현으로 구축하는 방식이다. 본 논문은 피터 줌터의 건축에 나타나는 빛과 재료의 구축 방식, 그리고 공간의 경험에 대하여 살펴본다. 그의 건축 구축 방식은 일견 간단해 보일 수도 있으나 실제로는 프로젝트마다 고유한 빛과 재료의 적용과 텍토닉(tectonic)이 내재되어 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 이러한 점들을 자세히 살펴보고 그러한 구축방식이 궁극적으로 어떻게 공간의 경험과 관계를 하는지 고찰하는 것에 있다. 구체적인 사례는 Bruder Klaus Chapel과 Kolumba Museum으로 한정된다. 프로그램은 다르지만 빛을 사용하여 관람자의 공간경험과 공간인지가 어떻게 형성되는지를 다루면서 결론 맺는다.

A Study on the Traditionality in Modern Korean Houses of the 1990's Designed by Architects (한국 현대주택에 나타난 전통성 표현의 유형분류에 관한 연구 - 1990년 이후 건축각각 설계한 주택을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to dlassify into types of traditionality reflected in modern Korean houses in 1990's designed by architec Modern houses were divided into five types through qualitative analysis. Analysis is categorized into three parts, space-pl structural elements ornamental elements. Characteristics of each type were defined as 'Indicative expression of the traditionalit', 'Decorative expression of the traditionality', 'Eclectic expression of the traditionality', 'Contemporary expression of the traditionalit', 'Abstract expression of the traditionality'. The results showed that 'Contemporary or Abstract expression of traditionality(type IV and V) were major types of modern Korean houses expressed traditionality. This reveals that in order to apply traditionality to the modern houses, simplifed and sbstracted for were preferred comparing with the direct imitation of traditional forms.

  • In modern society, the place we live and reside decides quality of our lives and pattern of behaviors, and it appears with indeterminative and circulating forms. The place provides different experiences and restrictions to us as intentions of human being and order of nature merges into each other. Formation of such place decides the character depending on its relationship of orders. There would be various methods to prescribe for the ability, that is, characteristics, of space. It is the purpose of this research to classify different components defining the character of the space based on a general notion of place and to find out how it is reflected in the space itself. It is to analyze difference case studies by finding out the relationship between the factors affecting the formation of places and aspects of different expressions within the space. The research would assist in forming different harmonious places reflecting the phases of this modern time as designing interior spaces, and it is also to provide footstone for the formation of space which is not only growing but also future oriented.
