  • In this paper, design of a new 3-dimensional (3-D) 16-ary signal constellation with constant envelope is presented and analyzed. Unlike the conventional 16-ary constellations, all signal points of the new constellation are uniformly located on the surface of a sphere so that they have a unique amplitude level and a symmetrical structure. When average power of the constellations is normalized, the presented 16-ary constellation has around 11.4% increased minimum Euclidean distance (MED) as compared to the conventional ones that have non-constant envelope. As a result, a digital communication system which exploits the presented constellation has 1.2dB improved symbol error rate (SER). While signal points of the conventional constant-envelope constellation are not distributed uniformly on the surface of a sphere, those of the proposed constellation has a completely symmetric distribution. In addition, the new signal constellation has much lower computational complexity for practical implementation than the conventional one. Hence, the proposed 3-D 16-ary signal constellation is appropriate for the application to a communication system which strongly requires a constant-envelope characteristic.

  • In this paper, a system model for transmission of 3-dimensional (3-D) signals is presented and its performance is analyzed. Unlike 2-D signals, no quadrature form expression for the 3-D signals is available. Exploiting a set of orthogonal basis functions, the 3-D signals are transmitted. As a result of computer simulation using very higher-level signal constellations, the 3-D transmission system has significantly improved error performance as compared with the 2-D system. It is considered that the principal reason for such performance improvement is much increased minimum Euclidean distance (MED) of the 3-D lattice constellations compared with the corresponding 2-D ones. When the MEDs of 2-D and 3-D lattice constellation are compared to confirm the analysis, the MED of 3-D 1024-ary constellation is around 2.6 times larger than that of the quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Expanding the constellation size to 4096, the MED of 3-D lattice constellation is increased by 3.2 times of the QAM.

  • In this paper, a method to design 3-dimensional (3-D) cross-lattice signal constellations with increased compactness is presented and analyzed. Here, the symbols located at the outermost sides in the conventional lattice constellation are moved symmetrically to fill in empty sides and sunken corners. While the minimum Euclidean distance (MED) among adjacent symbols remains unchanged, the presented cross-lattice constellations have 3~5% reduced average power and upto 25% reduced total volume as compared with the conventional ones. Due to the increase compactness, average power of the new 3-D constellations is lower than that of the conventional ones. As a result, computer simulation verifies that the presented cross-lattice constellations can improve symbol error performance of a digital transmission system about 0.4 [dB]. Hence, the proposed 3-D cross-lattice constellations are appropriate for low-power and high-quality digital communication systems.

  • In this paper, we propose a new design method of signal constellation of the spiral quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) exploiting a modified gradient descent search algorithm and its binary mapping rule. Unlike the conventional method, the new method, which uses and the constellation optimization algorithm and the maximum number of iterations as a parameter for the iterative design, is more robust to phase noise. And the proposed binary mapping rule significantly reduces the average Hamming distance of the spiral constellation. As a result, the proposed spiral QAM constellation has much improved error performance compared to the conventional ones even in a very severe phase noise environment. It is, therefore, considered that the proposed QAM may be a useful modulation format for coherent optical communication systems and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems.

  • In this paper, performance of a maximum-likelihood modulation classification for quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is studied. Unlike previous works, the relative classification performance with respect to the available modulations and performance limit with single-sample observation are presented. For those purposes, all constellations are set to have the same minimum Euclidean distance between symbols so that a smaller constellation is a subset of the larger ones. And only one sample of received waveform is used for multiple hypothesis test. As a result, classification performance is improved with increase in signal-to-noise ratio in all the experiments. Especially, when the true modulation format used in the transmitter is 4 QAM, almost perfect classification can be achieved without any additional information or observation samples. Though the possibility of false classification due to the symbols shared by subset constellations always exists, correct classification ratio of $80{\%}$ can be obtained with the single-sample observation when the true modulation formats are 16 and 64 QAM.

  • In this paper, a new orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with 3-dimensional (3-D) signal mapper is proposed. Here, the signal mapper consists of signals on the surface of Poincare sphere. If the signal points are uniformly distributed and normalized to have the same average power, the minimum Euclidean distance of a 3-D constellation is much larger than that of a 2-D constellation. Computer simulation shows that the proposed OFDM has much improved error performance as compared with the conventional system.

  • Phase rotational is a practical problem in the implementation of coherent demodulation. Large phase noise may intorduce phase rotation in the demodulator which results in repeated decision errors. This paper presents a simple and yet very efficient technique in building a carrier recovery loop which minimizes the phase rotation by improving the stability of the decision-directed carrier recovery loop. Simulation shows this novel technique improves the performance of the carrier recovery loop as well as stability.

  • In this paper, a new signal constellation design method is proposed for Multi-Phase(MP)/CDMA and its performance is compared with that of conventional method. In general MPSK modulation, the neighbor phases are allocated to the symbols that have only one different bit. However, the neighbor phases are allocated to the signal levels that have small differences in amplitude after clipping process since the transmitting signals in MP/CDMA are not binary symbols but the signal levels. The analysis shows that the performance of proposed scheme is much better than that of conventional method and it is better to increase the number of clipping levels than decrease the number of clipping levels and increase the region of guard phase.

  • It is very important to reduce the PAPR(Peak to Average Power Ratio) in the OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) communication system. We propose an ACE(Active Constellation Extension) method that does not require the side information unlike the conventional PTS and SLM method. This ACE method is to clip the OFDM signal for the PAPR reduction. Then, the basic constellation actively moves into the higher level of M-QAM for the constellation extension due to the clipping. The already existing M-QAM system can be available so that it can be easily realized. So, we can get the target PAPR by the extension of the constellation level. In this paper, we can find the PAPR reduction of 4 dB by the 16-QAM extension, and can achieve the target PAPR by the 64-QAM ACE(Active Constellation Extension).
