  • As the demands for traditional Korean housing has been increased in recent years, modernized Korean traditional housing (Hanok) was developed as a way of providing Hanok for the public. Modernized Hanok attempts to remedy the shortcomings of the traditional hanok (i.e., high unit cost of building and low energy performance). In the previous researches, standardization and productivity improvement for modernized Hanok dissemination have been intensely developed. Above all, cost estimating for modernized Hanok is also an important factor. In an effort to provide effective system for Hanok construction, this paper developed 'standard cost data' for modernized Hanok. Distinct characteristic of modernized Hanok construction were analyzed first. Then, basic structure was identified, and major items were selected for Hanok standard cost data. However, this set of cost data was developed based on two mock-up Hanok projects actually constructed. Accordingly, this standard cost data will be further updated and modified by continuously accumulating real-world Hanok projects

  • Modernized Korean housing (Hanok) with competitive price has been actively developed due to the increased interests in traditional Korean housing. Developing new building materials and methods is an essential area for Modernized Hanok. This paper compared and analyzed two mock-up buildings of Modernized Hanok and one mock-up of Traditional Hanok those were actually constructed as test-beds. Many different new methods were introduced, and their influences on construction cost and schedule were analyzed in order to verify the research results as well as to find implications for future direction. As a result, the construction cost and schedule of Modernized Hanok have been decreased by about 40% and 20%, respectively, when compared with traditional one. 'Wood frame' and 'Roof' are found as being the most influencing areas with highest weights in terms of cost and schedule. Therefore, further development in these two areas would facilitate to reduce overall cost of Modernized Hanok with improved building performance.

  • The research efforts to modernize Hanok (Korean traditional housing) have been performed to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness through application of modern building methods and materials, and to disseminate it in various forms of sizes and facilities. In this study, in order to identify the variations of modernized Hanok, data from seven test-bed projects are analyzed based on the building work-section, element, method, and material. The data were standardized and managed through the modernized Hanok classification system (Hanclass) to facilitate systematic comparisons of the test-bed projects by the variation of building method and it's cost impact. Identified factors of the variation in terms of building methods were then itemized and quantified in terms of building cost. Findings of this study indicate that the timber structure is the most critical area for future variation for improving the quality and cost-effectiveness. The results of this study will be also used to systemize the Hanok database for further studies.

  • This paper aims to propose a method for the systematic management of construction information using ontology. In particular, it was intended to propose a method to systematically manage the construction method information required by designers and constructors. The information used in this paper is a case of test-bed construction resulting from 10 years of modernized Hanok technology development research. The new construction methods of modernized Hanok were organized using the ontology editor, Protege. To this end, the concept of ontology and the process of constructing ontology have been summarized through a review of existing research first. A conceptual diagram for constructing a domain ontology of the modernized Hanok construction methods was then proposed, and the effectiveness of the proposed domain ontology was verified using the SPARQL Query function of Protege. Finally, the defined classes and construction method metadata were published on the web using ontology web language (OWL).

  • Purpose: Grafting new hanok-style application technology on child daycare facility among public buildings can be an alternative that provides infant facility, which is placed at the center of social attention and interest, with pleasant nursing environment. Besides, it is expected to have a great impact on infants' and young children's emotion by helping them recognize traditional culture at early stage and furthermore can be used for villagers to experience differentiated traditional culture. Method: To investigate the recent construction of HeungCheon/SuRak/GeumGwa's Hanok child daycare facility recognizing for architectural planning characteristics in common tendency Hanok that presents a physical improvement plan for preparing the continued competitiveness. Also attention to the creative expression of the traditional spaces about the natural environment are implemented in Nurseries and we propose the possibilities that can be realized in the future Hanok child daycare facility. Result: The combination of modern materials and modern construction technology of New-hanok method with improved ability has improved the shortcomings of traditional architecture and increase the ease and safety of traditional architecture succeed the suggest direction of improvement modern society. Therefore, Hanok child daycare facility is preparing adequate capability to solve regional polarization and social care issues.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose an approximate estimation system for Modernized Hanok. Mock-up (Jisinjae) site data has been collected and analysed to characterize the modernized Hanok and to examine the range of cost fluctuation rate with each work items. As a result, number of floor, area (㎥), shape, methods and materials were considered as key factors for price change on the total construction cost. Furthermore, wood structure (34%) and roof (17%) account for major cost percentage. The cost fluctuation rate of two factors were -3.3%~+5.6% (wood structure) and -4.1%~+4.2% (roof). For further research, existing method will be analysed in order to developing the Hanok estimation system. And the cost fluctuation rate of every work items will be continually evaluated.

  • In the 4th Industrial Revolution and changes in the construction industry market, the importance of information management is becoming more emphasized. For efficient use of information, construction data must be collected, processed and analyzed more quickly and accurately, depending on the purpose of the project. Thus, data could be utilized as integrated knowledge. However, there is a limit to searching or managing construction information produced in various formats over the entire life cycle by index words. Therefore, this study proposes a construction information integrated management plan that reflects the characteristics of the construction industry by applying the OWL concept. For this, as an initial study, an architectural object of small size and clear features was needed. Therefore, a construction information management study using OWL was conducted for Korean traditional architectural style houses (Hanok) which has these characteristics.

  • Prediction of construction cost in the planning stage that provides basic information for feasibility study, budgeting, and planning is an important factor for successful project execution. In this study, a prediction model was developed for the purpose of improving the accuracy of estimating the construction cost of Hanok in the planning stage. The cost of this model is estimated by two methods. First, the cost of wood work, which accounts for the largest portion of the total construction cost, is estimated by calculating the approximate quantity under various conditions (structure type, roof type, plane type, etc.). Second, the cost of the rest work sections except the wood work is estimated by using the unit cost model. The predictive model was verified by two case projects, and the error rate of total construction cost was -4%(case 1) and -6%(case 2). These results showed an error rate in the range that can be applied to practice in the planning stage.
