  • The purpose of this study is to prevent risk of emotional labor and health through verifying the mediating effects of depression on the relationship between emotional labor and somatic symptoms and insomnia in non-medical hospital workers. For this study, a sample of 533 tertiary hospital's non-medical workers completed the questionnaires of the Korean Emotional Labor Scale, PHQ-15, ISI, PHQ-9. The data was analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 program. The results can be summarized as follows. 1. Among the emotional labor sub-factors, emotional dissonance had a significant effect on depression, somatic symptoms and insomnia. Other sub-factors had a relatively small effect or had no effect. 2. The results showed the partial mediating effects of depression on the relationship between emotional labor and somatic symptoms. 3. The results showed the full mediating effects of depression on the relationship between emotional labor and insomnia. On the basis of the results, we suggest the necessity of dealing with emotional dissonance and depression in non-medical hospital workers' emotional labor and health issues.

  • Despite a growing trend in elder mistreatment, research about the problem and its effects on the victims has been sparse. Notably missing are the perspectives of older adults themselves, whose perceptions and responses to elder mistreatment are greatly affected by social and cultural context. The purpose of this study is to examine factors associated with older persons' perceptions of elder mistreatment and subsequent help-seeking behaviors. Six hypothetical scenarios featuring elders were the basis of interviews with 124 older persons, drawn by a quota sampling strategy. Findings indicated that older persons perceived situations of physical abuse (87.9%), financial abuse (86.3%), and psychological abuse (66.1%) to be elder mistreatment, yet respondents showed less sensitivity to elder mistreatment that took the form of physical mistreatment within a couple (47.6%), neglect (40.3%), and self-neglect (16.9%). Certain scenarios yielded less intention to seek help: namely, physical mistreatment within a couple, neglect, and self-neglect. Older persons' personal characteristics, social factors, and cultural factors exerted significant influence on both perception and help-seeking behavior. Perception was identified as a key factor that significantly influenced help-seeking behavior. Findings point to awareness of cultural and social context for success in elder mistreatment prevention, intervention, and policy design for this population.

The selected elderly people was provided the MFPP during an eight-week period of time, once a week, 70 to 90 minutes per each section. The design of this study was non-equivalent control-group with repeated measuring by quasi-experimental study. Data were collected before treatment, 8 week after treatment and 4 week after retention from July to October, 2010. Data were analyzed with numbers, percentage, Fisher's exact test, x2-test, repeated measures ANOVA, ANCOVA and Logistic regression. There were significant differences in fall frequency, balance, fear of falling, fall efficacy, home environmental hazards between the experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). This study showed that the multifactorial fall prevention program(MFPP) was useful nursing intervention for strengthening physical·psychological and environmental functions of the low-income elderly people, as well as preventing fall.

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of the indoor environmental factors of dental hygienists on physical symptoms. Methods : The subjects were 210 dental hygienists in dental hospitals and clinics in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Incheon and South Chungnam Province from May 1 to June 20, 2013. Results : There were significant differences between the presence or absence of windows in respiratory symptoms and eye symptoms. Room temperature, bad smell, and dry humidity had significant influences on physical and respiratory symptoms. Dermatological and ophthalmological symptoms were affected by dryness, smell and dusts. Dusts and bad smell also had influences on a variety of subjective symptoms. Conclusions : The indoor environments of dental hospitals and clinics affect the respiratory, dermatological, and ophthalmological symptoms because various hazardous materials are generated by the dental treatment. Therefore dental hygienists should have a correct understanding of bacteria, dusts and bio-aerosol in order to ensure the successful environmental control.

  • We have long kept our Cartesian tradition in which Mind privileges over Body; the invention of printing technology has accelerated the tradition in which the intelligence and legibility of media were considered as a higher human value. However, the development of media and technology are supporting the multisensory mechanisms of the body as it was in preliterate era when we communicated with our whole bodily experiences. The development and spread of mass-media and new technologies have broaden the boundary of human sensory that are largely dominated by visual information and expanded it to auditory, olfactory and even gustatory sensation. Since 1960's, some philosophers and artists have recognized the human body as a subjective matter, starting the movement in which the body plays a role as an essential factor in study of human perception and cognition, aesthetics in art, and sociology, and the changed perspectives are practiced vigorously in the field of new media art; the theory of Maurice Merleau-Ponty who clarified the body as a general means for the body's possession of world, so that recognize the importance of cognition of one's body and approved the embodiment could be applied and practiced here. Therefore, we discuss how Merleau-Ponty's philosophical theory can be practiced and how McLuhan's perspective could be applied on the notion of body's extension in media by analysing some new media art cases.

  • Along with the well-established evidence on the negative effect of social isolation on physical and mental health, increasing attention has been paid to multi-dimensional nature of social isolation. One line of study on social isolation has discussed different pathways between objective and subjective social isolation and health. Another stream of the research focused on the possibly non-linear association between social isolation and health by age cohort groups. Drawing from the two lines of research, this study aimed at empirically examine to what extent objective and subjective social isolation are associated with physical and mental health independently and how the associations vary by three age cohorts(i.e. the middle-aged, the young old, the old-old). Data came from the first wave of Korean Social Life, Health and Aging Project (KSHAP) (N= 814). Findings showed 1) objective subjective isolation were significantly related with worse physical and mental health, interestingly, subjective social isolation was associated with mental health only, 2) pattern of association between social isolation and physical health varied by age cohorts. Specifically, compared to the middle-aged, the young old with higher objective social isolation exhibited lower level of physical health, while the old-old with higher subjective social isolation were likely to experience lower physical health. Based on the findings, we discussed implications and suggestions for future research and relevant policy/program development for ameliorating objective and subjective social isolation.
