Due to its high power density, long cycle life and clean nature supercapacitors are widely used for improving the dynamic characteristics of the new and renewable energy sources and extending the battery run-time and life. In this paper improved dynamic model of the supercapacitor is developed by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. The developed model can be used to accurately estimate the dynamic behaviour of the supercapacitor and calculate the exact capacitance value at a certain state of charges. The model of the supercapacitor in the frequency domain is equivalently transformed into that in the time domain for Matlab/Simulink simulaton. The simulation data shows fine agreements with experimental results, thereby proving the validity and the accuracy of the developed model.

This paper proposes a new islanding detection method for a grid-connected photovoltaic system. It is based on the fact that the equivalent harmonic components vary according to the grid connection status. The advantage of the proposed method is the reduced Non-Detection Zone and fast detection time. Also it can have the robust detection capability against grid disturbances. The theoretic analysis using grid-harmonic modeling is performed and verified by test result using 32-bit high performance DSP processor.
Since the characteristics of Renewable Energy Sources like wind turbine generators are very different from those of existing thermal power generators and their response to the sudden change of the frequency are not as good as that from thermal power generators. Especially when the penetration level of the wind power generation is substantially high, the output from the WTG would be possibly limited to keep the stability of power systems. For this, this paper implements the process for calculating the dynamic penetration limit of WTG and analyze the potential application of BESS for increasing the dynamic penetration limit of WTG.

Traditional temples in Korea are the important cultural heritage because of artistic traditonal buildings and structures, paintings, sculptures, and big forest areas which are most ecological and beautiful in Korea. Since traditional temples still function as religious places for very long time, the sense of places intrinsic to the temples are very strong and vivid. The sense of place is very closely related to the conservation of the original landscape type. Recently however, there is a strong tendency to use solar energy in traditional temples because of the low energy efficiency of the old traditional architecture which may have negative impact on landscape which again in turn may lead to the destruction of the sense of place. The purpose of this study was to suggest some landscape design guidelines to protect the sense of place of traditional temple by investigating the impact of solar energy facility on the landscape experience of traditional temple. In order to do perform this purpose, Tongdosa was selected as a study site and four kinds of measurement tools(landscape image, temple identity, landscape satisfaction, degree of landscape improvement) were used as questionnaire items. 180 college students participated in the questionnaire survey. The analysis showed that the solar energy facility had very negative impact on landscape experience such as three landscape image factors(scenic beauty, openness, complexity), landscape satisfaction, temple identity, and landscape improvement. Based on the results, three landscape improvement plans were suggested. First, solar energy facility should be built in the forest in order not to be exposed to visitors, if possible. Second, the landscape management of traditional temple should emphasize on sustaining scenic beauty and temple identity along with the provision of openness. Lastly, detailed landscape guideline should be prepared to regulate the scale, ratio, and the form of the artificial buildings and structures to protect the sense of place of traditional temple.

The present paper considers the conceptual design of floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. The worldwide demand for ocean renewable energy is increasing rapidly. Wave and offshore wind energy have been attractive among the various ocean renewable energy sources, and the site to generate electricity from wave and offshore wind accords well together. This means that a hybrid power generation system, which uses wave and offshore wind energy simultaneously has many advantages and several systems have been already developed in Western Europe. A R&D project for a 10 MW class floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system has been also launched in Korea. A semi-submersible platform, which has four vertical columns at each corner of the platform to be connected with horizontal pontoons, was designed for this system considering arrangements of multiple wind turbines and wave energy converters. A mooring system and power cable were also designed based on the metocean data of installation site. In the present paper, those results are presented, and the difficulties and design method in the design of hybrid power generation system are presented.

Hydrogen gas is an important and promising energy resource that has no emissions of pollutants during power generation. However, hydrogen gas is very dangerous because it is colorless, odorless, highly flammable, and explosive at low concentration. Conventional techniques for hydrogen gas detection are very difficult for measuring the hydrogen gas distribution at long distances, because they sample the gas to measure its concentration. Raman lidar is one of the techniques for remotely detecting hydrogen gas and measuring the range of the hydrogen gas distribution. A Raman lidar system with an on-axis optical receiver was developed to improve the range of hydrogen gas detection at long distance. To verify the accuracy and improvement in the range of detecting the hydrogen gas, experiments measuring the hydrogen gas concentration are carried out using the developed on-axis Raman lidar system and a gas chamber, to prevent explosion of the hydrogen gas. As a result, our developed on-axis Raman lidar system can measure a minimum hydrogen gas concentration of 0.66 volume percent at a distance of 50 m.

Recently, new distributed power sources such as photovoltaic, wind power, fuel cell systems etc. are energetically interconnected and operated in the distribution feeders, as one of the national projects for alternative energy. When new power sources are considered to be interconnected to distribution systems, bi-directional power flow and interconnection conditions of new power sources may cause several power quality problems like voltage sag, voltage swell, harmonics, since new power sources can change typical characteristics of distribution systems. Under these situations, this paper deals with the analysis the power quality problems at primary and secondary feeders in distribution systems, when new power sources like photovoltaic (PV) systems are interconnected, by using the test devices for PV systems based on the LabVIEW S/W. This paper presents the test device which is consisted with model distribution system and model PV systems. By performing the simulation for power quality operation characteristic based on the test facilities, this paper presents the optimal countermeasures for power quality.
The Energy Storage System stores electricity for later use. This system can store electricity from legacy electric power systems or renewable energy systems into a battery device when demand is low. When there is high electricity demand, it uses the electricity previously stored and enables efficient energy usage and stable operation of the electric power system. It increases the energy usage efficiency, stabilizes the power supply system, and increases the utilization of renewable energy. The recent increase in the global interest for efficient energy consumption has increased the need for an energy storage system that can satisfy both the consumers' demand for stable power supply and the suppliers' demand for power demand normalization. In general, an energy storage system consists of a Power Conditioning System, a Battery Management System, a battery cell and peripheral devices. The specifications of the subsystems that form the energy storage system are manufacturer dependent. Since the core component interfaces are not standardized, there are difficulties in forming and operating the energy storage system. In this paper, the design of the profile structure for energy storage system and realization of private profiling system for energy storage system is presented. The profiling system accommodates diverse component settings that are manufacturer dependent and information needed for effective operation. The settings and operation information of various PCSs, BMSs, battery cells, and other peripheral device are analyzed to define profile specification and structure. A profile adapter software that can be applied to energy storage system is designed and implemented. The profiles for energy storage system generated by the profile authoring tool consist of a settings profile and operation profile. Setting profile consists of configuration information for energy device what composes energy saving system. To be more specific, setting profile has three parts of category as information for electric control module, sub system, and interface for communication between electric devices. Operation profile includes information in relation to the method in which controls Energy Storage system. The profiles are based on standard XML specification to accommodate future extensions. The profile system has been verified by applying it to an energy storage system and testing charge and discharge operations.

Probabilistic nonlinear first ply failure loads of flat composite panels and nonlinear buckling loads of curved composite panels with cutouts are estimated to provide the more reliable main load carrying structure in the renewable energy industry and offshore structures. The response surface method approximates limit state surface to a second order polynomial form of random variables with the results of deterministic finite element analyses at given sampling design points. Furthermore, the iterative linear interpolation scheme is used to obtain a more accurate approximation of the limit state surface near the most probable failure point (MPFP). The advanced first order second moment method and the Monte Carlo method are performed on an approximated limit state surface to evaluate the probability of failure. Finally, the sensitivity of the reliability index with respect to transformed random variables is investigated to figure out the main random variables that have an effect on failures.

The leachate recirculation anaerobic digestion system has the advantage of stable methane gas generation compared with existing one phase systems. In this study, an anaerobic digestion system fed with source separated food waste from school cafeteria was studied with different food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratios (8:2, 3:7, 2:8). From this study, leachate recirculation anaerobic reactor with food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratio of 2:8 that is 9 gVS/L of OLR(Organic Loading Rate) had the highest gas production. Also this anaerobic reactor showed daily decrease of H2S and NH3 contents in produced gas. Average biogas yield was 1.395 m3 Biogas/kg VS added. Other anaerobic reactors with food waste/inoculum anaerobic sludge volume ratio of 8:2 and 3:7 stopped methane gas production.
