  • Smart Grid is an intelligent power grid for efficiently producing and consuming electricity through bi-directional communication between power producers and consumers. As renewable energy develops, the share of renewable energy in the smart grid is increasing. Renewable energy has a problem that it differs from existing power generation methods that can predict and control power generation because the power generation changes in real time. Applying a self-adaptative framework to the Smart Grid will enable efficient operation of the Smart Grid by adapting to the amount of renewable energy power generated in real time. In this paper, we assume that smart villages equipped with photovoltaic power generation facilities are installed, and apply the self-adaptative framework, AiTES, to show that smart grid can be efficiently operated through self adaptation framework.

  • Renewable energy such as solar and wind power is a resource that is sensitive to weather conditions and environmental changes. Since the amount of power generated by a facility can vary depending on the installation location and structure, it is important to accurately predict the amount of power generation. Using meteorological data, a data preprocessing process based on principal component analysis was conducted to monitor the relationship between features that affect energy production prediction. In addition, in this study, the prediction was tested by reconstructing the dataset according to the sensitivity and applying it to the machine learning model. Using the proposed model, the performance of energy production prediction using random forest regression was confirmed by predicting energy production according to the meteorological environment for new and renewable energy, and comparing it with the actual production value at that time.

  • It is recognized that RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standard) and FIT(Feed-in Tariff) are two main policy instruments to promote Renewable Electricity(RE). The Korean Government announced in 2008 that RE promotion scheme will be changed to RPS from current FIT system in 2012. But we believe RPS is inferior to FIT for promoting less developed technologies such as photovoltaics or wind power. This is because the achievement of RE promotion in countries adopting RPS is markedly worse than that in European counties or Janpan adopting FIT. If the policy change is inevitable, when considering the lessons from Japan's failure as well as supporting the less developed technologies, it is recommended that either the market should be divided into several technology and scale categories, or more RPS-Credit per kWh should be assigned to the photovoltaic and wind power than instead of letting the all technologies compete in the "open category". It is also recommended that (1) Renewable Energy Promotion Fund(tentative name) based on a part of current energy related tax revenue should be introduced, or (2) cost of supporting the Renewable Electricity should automatically be transferred into the electricity bill of electricity consumers following the German System.

  • The increase in the amount of energy used in the agricultural sector due to the expansion of agricultural machinery and greenhouse horticulture has caused a range of problems, such as an increase in the cost of input, such as heating costs and greenhouse gas emission. To overcome these problems, this study examined the current status of energy use in greenhouse horticulture as well as the change patterns of non-taxable oil and agricultural electricity, and reviewed the current status of the supply of renewable energy and energy saving facilities for agriculture. This study investigated the area of advanced and renewable energy and energy saving facilities implemented, applied the energy saving ratio of advanced and renewable energy and energy saving facilities, and determined the effects of renewable energy in the agricultural sector, such as increase in production, decrease in heating cost, reduction in Government financial expenditure, reduction in greenhouse gas emission, and oil substitution effect.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate the relationship between CO2 emissions and both nuclear power and renewable energy generation, and compare the cost efficiencies of nuclear power and renewable energy generation in reducing CO2 emissions in Korea. The results show that nuclear power and renewable energy generation should be increased by 1.344% and 7.874% to reduce CO2 emissions by 1%, respectively. Using the estimated coefficients and the levelized costs of electricity by source including the external costs, if the current amount of electricity generation is one megawatt-hour, the range of generation cost of nuclear power generation to reduce 1% CO2 emissions is $0.72~$1.49 depending on the level of external costs. In the case of renewable energy generation, the generation cost to reduce 1% CO2 emissions is $6.49. That is, to mitigate 1% of CO2 emissions at the total electricity generation of 353 million MWh in 2020 in Korea, the total generation costs range for nuclear power is $254 million~$526 million for the nuclear power, and the cost for renewable energy is $2.289 billion for renewable energy. Hence, we can conclude that, in Korea, nuclear power generation is more cost-efficient than renewable energy generation in mitigating CO2 emissions, even with the external costs of nuclear power generation.

  • The primary purpose of Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) is to facilitate investment in renewable energy technology. Since emission trading program has similar purpose, it is conceivable to attempt to link RPS and emission trading program through interlinked markets. RPS in Korea with single REC and emission allowance markets has particular advantages for constructing linkages between two markets. This paper provides a real option model to examine investment effects of linkage of RPS to the trading program. Emission permit price and REC price are assumed to follow stochastic processes and renewable investment is irreversible. The result shows that linked market provides further incentive for renewable investment by raising managerial flexibility for power companies.
