Activity Change of University Libraries in Terms of the Reports of University Newspapers (대학신문 보도를 통해 본 대학도서관의 활동 변화)

  • This study analyzes articles reported on university newspapers and figures out what roles they played in those days and how they have changed up to now. For this, it selected newspapers issued at P university for the last 60 years and examined and analyzed every article related to university libraries in them. As a result, it is found that the contents of the articles have been changed dramatically as time goes by. The study result is expected to be used as foundational data for the operation of university libraries or their long-term development projects as we reflect ourselves rationally and face reality and establish desirable future-oriented library features.

A Study on the Corrections in Selected Korean and American Newspapers (한국과 미국 일간신문의 정정보도 기사 비교연구: 조선일보, 한겨레신문, 뉴욕타임스, 샌프란시스코 크로니컬을 중심으로)

  • This study explores the corrections on the Korean and the U. S. daily newspapers for the characteristics and differences through the content analysis. For the research, Chosun Ilbo, Hankyoreh Shinmun, The New York Times and The San Francisco Chronicles are selected. The main differences between the Korean and American newspapers are as follows: Firstly, the average number of newspaper errors in Korean dailies are as half as little of those in the U. S. dailies. Secondly, regarding the subcategory of mistakes, the largest thematical number is the societal matters(36.0%), followed by politics(18.3%) and economy(12.1%) for the Korean newspapers. By contrast, errors in culture(17.4%) is the most frequently made by the American newspaper reporters and editors, followed by lifestyle(8.6%), and sports(7.0%). Thirdly, in terms of content of mistakes, errors in names(26.2%) that occurred the most, followed by misidentifications(18.1%) and misattribution(15.8%) for the Korean dailies; the errors in numbers(33.7%), spelling and typographical errors(12.1%) and date(5.6%) for the U. S. dailies. Fourthly, one of the critical reasons that mistakes occurred because Korean reporters are lack of double checking the stories; the U. S. reporters simply by overlooking the articles. Finally, the Korean newspapers make use of only two kinds of correction formats, while the U.S. newspapers use six different correction formats for their newspaper readers.

The Journalists' Acceptance Attitudes toward Market-Driven Journalism (시장지향적 저널리즘에 대한 기자들의 수용태도)

  • This study was executed with the aim of finding out how journalists accept the market-driven journalism. 24 journalists were selected from each conservative and progressive newspapers and held in-depth interviews. The result show journalists believe that news articles should be useful than interesting. Also the result show they think it is just market-driven journalism that making public issues to social dispute in Korea. And most of them thought newspaper should be made toward upgrading it‘s contents and quality. There were some differences in thinking about those study issue between journalists belong to conservative and progressive newspapers. But there were no differences between reporters and desks.

A Study on the Sentence Length of Sports News in the Era of the Convergency (융복합 시대에서 스포츠기사의 문장길이에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristic of the length of sentence of sports news articles compared with other sections, other newspaper and sports events. In order to achieve this purpose, 4 daily newspapers(Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Kyunghyang Shinmun and MKsports) were selected as research sources. The length of sentence of collected articles was analyzed by One way ANOVA and Scheffe as post-hoc. The results of these analyses are summarized into three as follows: First, the length of sentence of news articles has significant difference by sections. To put it concretely, the sentences in politics section were the longest, and then economy, editorials comes. The sports section has the shortest sentences. Second, the length of sports articles has significant difference by newspapers. In particular, MK sports which is a sports-oriented newspaper has the shortest in the length of sentence of sports articles than other newspapers such as Chosun, Dong-A and Kyunghyang. Third, the length of sentence of sports articles has significant differences by the sports events. More specifically golf is the longest, and then basketball, soccer and baseball follows.

Current Conditions and Problems of Entertainers and Politicians' SNS-based News Reports on Internet Newspapers (국내 인터넷신문의 유명인 SNS 활용 기사의 현황과 문제점)

  • This study examined the problem of utilizing celebrity SNS in online news, which have increased by an average of 745 every year since 2010, reaching about 10,000 in 2021. 40 online newspapers were selected and 202,730 news articles produced by these newspapers in July 2021 were analyzed. As a result, 1.27% (2,582) of all articles were found to be using celebrity SNS as a source. This indicates that on average, online newspapers produce 2.08 celebrity SNS-utilized articles per day and 64.7 articles per month. Specifically, entertainer SNS (53.7%) was used the most compared to SNS of politician(39.8%) and influencer(6.5%). Instagram(69.1%, 57.1%) was utilized the most for entertainer and influencer and this were mostly related to personal information. On the other hand, Facebook(70.4%) was cited the most for politician, mostly related to opinions on social/political issues. The average length of SNS-based articles was 536 characters. The problem with news articles utilizing SNS is that most articles simply copy the SNS content without additional coverage(88.4%), and 14% of the articles did not disclose the exact source. Implication of the research on 40 online news agency is discussed.

An Analysis on the Library-Related Articles in the Rodong Shinmun of North Korea (북한 '로동신문'에 나타난 '도서관' 관련 기사 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to review what the Rodong Shinmun newspaper which represents the social communication of North Korea seeks, to search that the newspaper of North Korea consider the libraries to do certain roles in North Korea, and to review how these things, Rodong Shinmun and library, have developed themselves from historical and cultural aspects. First, it was reviewed whether the Rodong Shinmun and library had been closely related each other. Then, it was analyzed whether the formats and contents of the articles related with the libraries in the Rodong Shinmun had certain particular points or not. As the results, the 62 articles which were related with libraries were searched from 1971 to 2012 in the Rodong Shinmun and they had been analyzed by the aspects of subjects and styles. It was revealed that the actions of libraries in North Korea had been the special characteristics in formats and ways.

An Analysis on the Newspaper's Layout of the News Stand in NAVER -Focusing on the Websites of 10 dependent Online Newspapers (네이버 뉴스스탠드의 신문지면에 대한 비교분석 -10개 종속형 온라인 신문의 홈페이지를 중심으로)

  • This study aims at understanding the components of on-line newspaper and how each newspaper's layout configuration is differentiated through the analysis on the websites of 10 general daily newspapers in the news stand of NAVER. The collection of data was implemented twice, and One-Way ANOVA was used as an analyzing way. The content of the analysis was carried out based on the types of visual images, the number of photo-based articles and title-based articles, the size of image for the main story, etc. As a result of analysis, the rate of news articles with the audios, videos, cards and slides differentiated from paper-based newspaper was low, and also the news articles using the informative graphics and the graphic sources were very small in number. As a whole, the newspapers in the news stand of NAVER showed that they attempt to make a distinction of their newspaper layout by using a variety of editorial techniques. The significance of this paper is to offer a basic clue to the editing formation to promote the news consumption of newspapers. Under the circumstance that the ecology of media is rapidly being reformed by new media technology, the continuous study of how the newspaper layout should be changed will be needed.

Exploring the Issue Structure of Drone Crime in Newspaper Articles: Focusing on Language Network Analysis (신문 기사에서의 드론 범죄 관련 이슈구조 탐색: 언어 네트워크 분석을 중심으로)

  • This study aims to explore the issue of drones and crime in newspaper articles. BIG KINDS, an online news archive of the Korea Press Foundation, collected 1,213 newspaper articles that met the terms of "drone" and "crime" in 11 central and 28 regional comprehensive newspapers between January 1, 1990 and May 1, 2021. Among them, we perform keyword frequency, centrality analysis, network structure construction, CONCOR analysis, and density matrix analysis on 117 key keywords. According to the analysis, the main issues were classified into eight, and the report analysis on drones and crimes in newspaper articles showed that the government's policy-making and social problems on protecting people's privacy, preventing illegal filming, securing navigation safety, social security and resolution. This study attempts to expand the field of humanities and social studies related to drones and crime, and specifically suggests the current status and counterplan against drone-related crimes as policy implications and media implications.

Public Perception and Countermeasures on an 'Aging Society' - A Content Analysis of Newspaper Articles - ('고령화 사회(Aging society)'에 관한 인식과 대책 - 신문기사를 통해 본 동향 분석 -)

  • This study explored the tendencies of public perception and countermeasures on an aging society by the content analysis of Korea's four major daily newspapers since 2000. Results showed distinguishing growth of the public interest on an aging society. Articles were categorized into five domains - demographic structure, family and individual domain, health domain, economic and financial domain, and social domain. Economic and financial aspects occupied the highest frequency in the total number of articles. The analysis of public perception revealed both negative and positive perspectives on an aging society. In addition, the analysis of the newspaper articles identified particular phenomenon of Korean aging society as distinct rapid aging population, declining fertility rates caused by higher educational expenses, national security problems. Consequently, when we prepare for the alternatives of the aging society, we should pay attention to more various aspects of society based on the understanding of practical problems and needs. Furthermore, researches and discussions focusing on a particular phenomenon of Korea would be required.

A Study on Kim Dong-Seong's Activities as Journalist in 1920-30's (일제하 언론이 김동성의 언론활동에 관한 연구)

  • Most studies of Korean Newspaper in historical view have focused on the news writing form and editorial practice. Those studies have much rely on the memories of ex-journalist or the impression of scholars. So this study aims to give the concrete figures of news writing forms and editing practices in 1920-30's by investigating Kim Dong-Seong's activities as a journalist. He was a first journalist who studies journalism. He studied journalism during his stay in the Ohio State University as an english department student. After he came back to Seoul, he worked at the Dong-A Il Bo as an one of the first publish members. His activities as a journalist have much important meanings because of his varied works and careers. He also wrote a practical affair book for reporters which was the first book in Korea. As a result of research about Kim Dong-Seong's activities in 1920-30's, the feature of edit practice in 1920's had much emphasis not only on the headline but on the relation between type and print, and at the same time the combination of news or the change of typography was one of methods which make the editing more variety. News materials were collected varied news sources and legworks by reporter. These results show us that such a news reporting practice in 1920-30's is similar co the contemporary.
