  • Schwannoma is a benign nerve sheath tumor that is composed entirely of well differentiated Schwann cells. They are frequently located in the soft tissue of head and neck region, but only a 1% of them are located in the oral cavity. Schwannoma arising in the soft palate is extremely rare. We present a case of a soft palate schwannoma and report this case with a literature review.

  • Schwannoma of the larynx is uncommon neurogenic tumor that can cause the air way obstruction. For benign lesions, conservative surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Recently, we experienced a case of schwannoma originating from the subglottis in a 52 year old female patient. The tumor was removed successfully through endoscopic approach.

  • Schwannomas are benign neurogenic tumors arising from the peripheral nerve sheath and rare in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. About 4% of schwannomas in the head and neck area arise in the sinonasal cavity. As unilateral nasal masses in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus, schwannomas are likely to be mistaken for more common lesions such as nasal polyps or mucoceles. We recently experienced a case of schwannoma on the ethmoid sinus in a 33-year-old male which was surgically removed. Herein, we report this unusual case of schwannoma on the ethmoid sinus with a brief review of literature.

  • Schwannoma represents approximately 40% of neurogenic tumors arising in the mediastinum, and develops along the sympathetic or parasympathetic chain, intercostals nerve, and spinal ganglia. It is usually asymptomatic, and is confronted accidentally but can produce chest pain, cough and dyspnea. However, dyspnea with pleural effusion is rare in patients with benign schwannoma. We encountered two cases of benign schwannoma with pleural effusion. Both cases had similar initial symptoms and the characteristics of a mass but the characteristics of pleural effusion analysis were different. The benign schwannoma was confirmed in two cases using VATS (video-assisted tharawswpic surgery).

  • Since Keck described the tarsal tunnel syndrome in 1962, it has been one of the most frequently diagnosed of the entrapment neuropathies. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is usually of unknown origin, benign tumor may be one of the causes of tarsal tunnel syndrome. The object of the current study is to report our experience of surgical treatment about tarsal tunnel syndrome caused by neurilemmoma in 32-year-old female and by ganglion in 39-year-old male with a review of the literature.

  • The origin of a submucosal tumor is difficult to determine by endoscopic biopsy. One type of submucosal tumor, which originates in Schwann cell, a schwannoma represents 0.2% of all gastric tumors. We experienced the case of a 57-year-old female patient with a gastric schwannoma presenting with melena and anemia. Computed tomography and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a protruded huge mass from 3 cm below the cardia to angle. Seven endoscopic biopsies indicated only necrotic debri and granulation tissue, chronic gastritis. Because we suspected an advanced gastric cancer, or lymphoma with bleeding, It was performed an operation for an exact diagnosis and a treatment for bleeding. A-post-operative histopathological, immunohistochemical examination led to the final diagnosis of a gastric schwannoma.

  • The authors reviewed and analyzed the pathologically confirmed 230 cases of benign soft tissue tumors which had been treated at Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Seoul Hospital, Hanyang University College of Medicine from February 1984 to November 1997. The following results were obtained. 1. The most common benign soft tissue tumors was ganglion(26.5%) followed by hemangioma(19.6%), lipoma(17.0%), Baker's cyst(13.0%) and neurilemmoma(7.0%) in decreasing order of incidence. 2. Benign soft tissue tumors were found evenly distributed over all age group. Hemangioma and lymphangioma were usually found to occur before 20 years old. 3. Female was affected about 1.3 times more common. But, Baker's cyst and neurilemmoma occurred most frequently in male. 4. In children, the most common benign soft tissue tumors was hemangioma followed by ganglion, lymphangioma, and lipoma. In adult, ganglion, lipoma, Baker's cyst, hemangioma were common. 5. The lower extremity was the predominant site of occurrence(60.0%). 6. Benign soft tissue tumors were taken by excision. Local recurrences were developed in 22(9.6%) out of 230 cases, especially in hemangioma.

  • Neurogenic tumors of brachial plexus are rare lesions. Recently 1 experienced a case of Schwannoma arising from the brachial plexus. Thirtyfour-year-old man presented with a slow-growing mass on the left supraclavicular area. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well demarcated solid mass on posterosuperior aspect of the left subclavian artery. During operation, a well-encapsulated mass was seen beneath the brachial plexus. 1 performed intracapsular enucleation of the tumor from the none in an effort to avoid damaging none fibers as much as possible. Post-operative neurological deficit was not found.
