  • Based on the use cases of image recognition technology, this study looked at how artificial intelligence plays a role in image recognition technology. Through image recognition technology, satellite images can be analyzed with artificial intelligence to reveal the calculation of oil storage tanks in certain countries. And image recognition technology makes it possible for searching images or products similar to images taken or downloaded by users, as well as arranging fruit yields, or detecting plant diseases. Based on deep learning and neural network algorithms, we can recognize people's age, gender, and mood, confirming that image recognition technology is being applied in various industries. In this study, we can look at the use cases of domestic and overseas image recognition technology, as well as see which methods are being applied to the industry. In addition, through this study, the direction of future research was presented, focusing on various successful cases in which image recognition technology was implemented and applied in various industries. At the conclusion, it can be considered that the direction in which domestic image recognition technology should move forward in the future.

  • Thirty-five elementary schools in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do were surveyed on the installation status of plant labels. As a result of a comprehensive evaluation of the installation and condition of the plant labels, 12 out of 35 elementary schools were evaluated as "excellent," 13 as "good," and 8 as "insufficient." In some cases, various types of plant labels were installed on various types of plants and were updated continuously, indicating that the school members recognize the plant labels as an important educational tool. Meanwhile, some schools did not have a single plant label. Although plant labels were installed, instances occurred where they were neglected without continuous maintenance and management. Some plant labels were produced and installed by specialized companies, leading to errors in content or inadequate post-installation management, thereby compromising the school landscape. Therefore, we propose an alternative-allowing schools to independently produce and install plant labels. This approach preserves the school's uniqueness, and the process of producing and installing sustainable plant labels becomes an active educational tool.

  • Pedicularis growing at Mt. Halla of Jeju Island is known as an endemic species of P. hallaisanensis Hurusawa. On the other hand, the plant is morphologically similar to P. amoena, P. spicata, and P. verticillata in gross morphology, so the taxonomic treatment of the taxon remains controversial. To clarify the taxonomic position of the plants, we examined external morphological characters and nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS sequences for P. hallaisanensis and its related species. The plants of Mt. Halla are clearly different from P. amoena and P. verticillata in the morphology of calyx lobes, the length of galea and lower lip, density of glandular hairs on plants, presences of the radical leaves after anthesis and molecular data. However, P. hallaisanensis is not clearly separated from P. spicata distributed in N. E. Asia on external morphological characters and DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacers. In this study, the morphological and molecular data suggested that P. hallaisanensis should be merged into the former species.

  • This study investigated the impact of elementary science classes using metaverse on the academic achievement, positive experience in science, and digital literacy of elementary school students. In addition, we examined their perceptions. The respondents were derived from two classes in the sixth grade at an elementary school in Gyeonggi-do, who were selected designated as the experimental (n=29 students) and comparative (n=29) groups, respectively. Across five lessons under the "Plant Structure and Function" unit, the experimental group conducted science classes using the metaverse, whereas the comparative group conducted general textbook-based classes. To investigate instructional effects, the study performed ANCOVA using the pre-test score as a covariate, a survey on the perception of students about science classes using metaverse, and conducted interviews with a number of subjects. The result demonstrated that science classes using metaverse exerted no significant effect on scientific academic achievement and digital literacy. However, the study observed a statistically significant effect on science learning emotion which is a sub-element of positive experiences in science. The students were positively aware of science classes using metaverse in terms of interesting and diverse activities, and free expression of inquiry results and perceived the instability of smart devices and network connections as regrettable. Finally, the study posed the implications of the use of metaverse in science classes.

  • This study aims to examine the traditional living space to reflect the environment-friendly design methods and principles of reestablishment. To do so, this study carried on a related literature study and field survey. The traditional living space in terms of the environmental friendliness is reflected on site selection and space composition, and utilization of natural energy and natural materials. Focused on the Kwangajeong in Yangdong Village, this study is to identify eco-friendly techniques on the traditional living space. As a result, it shows that Kwangajeong with the side of the southeast in site selection had been considered in aspect of environmental control such as sunshine and solar radiation. Also building construction techniques had been used to minimize the variation of terrain. In aspect of environmental conservation, Kwangajeong had structurally arranged the gate, an inner yard and an inner floor to allow good ventilation. In aspect of space composition, Kwangajeong with the emphasis of scenic view had utilized the methods that attract external landscape through the control of its fences. Environment-friendly techniques and control principles in traditional space had been developed by a long experience through the long periods and the traditional techniques suitable for local climate and local environment have been developed. The technical development of these techniques to resolve the global environmental and energy issues and create a more pleasant living environment of human beings might be critical.

  • This study explored the educational effects of using ChatGPT in science lessons for elementary school students. The participants included 25 sixth-grade students studying at an elementary school in Metropolitan City D. This study examined the impacts of elementary science lessons on the cognitive development of elementary school students and their perceptions of using ChatGPT in their science classes. We found that science lessons that used ChatGPT aided the cognitive development of the participating elementary students. These students responded positively to the classes using ChatGPT. The results were then divided into those who perceived ChatGPT positively, those who perceived it negatively, and those who recognized both positive and negative aspects. Students who perceived it negatively mainly remained at the memorization level, and those who recognized both positive and negative aspects posed higher-level questions to ChatGPT.

  • Volatiles exist ubiquitously in nature. Volatile compounds produced by plants and microorganisms confer inter-kingdom and intra-kingdom communications. Autoinducer signaling molecules from contact-based chemical communication, such as bacterial quorum sensing, are relayed through short distances. By contrast, biogenic volatiles derived from plant-microbe interactions generate long-distance (>20 cm) alarm signals for sensing harmful microorganisms. In this review, we discuss prior work on volatile compound-mediated diagnosis of plant diseases, and the use of volatile packaging and dispensing approaches for the biological control of fungi, bacteria, and viruses. In this regard, recent developments on technologies to analyze and detect microbial volatile compounds are introduced. Furthermore, we survey the chemical encapsulation, slow-release, and bio-nano techniques for volatile formulation and delivery that are expected to overcome limitations in the application of biogenic volatiles to modern agriculture. Collectively, technological advances in volatile compound detection, packaging, and delivery provide great potential for the implementation of ecologically-sound plant disease management strategies. We hope that this review will help farmers and young scientists understand the nature of microbial volatile compounds, and shift paradigms on disease diagnosis and management to aromatic (volatile-based) agriculture.
