  • Optimum Cu and Mn contents in 0.05wt%C-Cu bearing hot rolled steel sheets were investigated by vickers hardness measurement, tensile test and transmission electron microscopy. It was determined that the optimum Cu and Mn contents were 1.2wt% and 0.75-0.85wt% respectively. It was confirmed by TEM observation that the coarse recipitates were fcc $\varepsilon$-Cu in 0.05%C-1.2%Cu-0.75%Mn-O.O4%Nb steel sheets. The Cu-bearing steel sheets having 780MPa of tensile strength could be fabricated by 10% pre-strain and aging treatment at $550^{\circ}C$ for 30min.

  • In this study, the age-hardening behavior and tensile properties of a cast AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN9) alloy are investigated and compared with those of a commercial AZ91 alloy. Even after homogenization heat treatment, the SEN9 alloy contains numerous undissolved secondary phases, Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, which results in a higher hardness value than the homogenized AZ91 alloy. Under aging condition at 200 ℃, both the AZ91 and SEN9 alloys exhibit the same peak-aging time of 8 h, but the peak hardness of the latter (86.8 Hv) is higher than that of the former (83.9 Hv). The precipitation behavior of Mg17Al12 phase during aging significantly differs in the two alloys. In the AZ91 alloy, the area fraction of Mg17Al12 discontinuous precipitates (DPs) increases up to ~50% as the aging time increases. In contrast, in the SEN9 alloy, the formation and growth of DPs during aging are substantially suppressed by the Ca- or Y-containing particles, which leads to the formation of only a small amount of DPs with an area fraction of ~4% after peak aging. Moreover, the size and interparticle spacing of Mg17Al12 precipitates of the peak-aged SEN9 alloy are smaller than those of the peak-aged AZ91 alloy. The homogenized AZ91 alloy exhibits a higher tensile strength than the homogenized SEN9 alloy due to the finer grains of the former. However, the peak-aged SEN9 alloy has a higher tensile elongation than the peak-aged AZ91 alloy due to the smaller amount of brittle DPs in the former.

  • Fe and Si are common impurity elements in the aluminum alloys. In this investigation, the effects of the addition of Fe and Si on the age-hardening behaviors of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd casting alloys were examined through hardness measurements, calorimetric techniques and observation of the transmission electron microscopy. The addition of Fe depresses the formation of GPII and ${\theta}'$, and thus retards the peak aging time and reduces the peak hardness of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd alloys. On the contrary, the addition of Si accelerates the formation of GPII and ${\theta}'$ and thus accelerates age-hardening behaviors of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd alloys.

  • Evaluations of the microstructure and mechanical properties of age hardenable Cu-2.0wt%Be alloy are performed in order to determine whether it can be used as a welding electrode for projection welding. The microstructure examinations, hardness measurements, and tensile tests of selective aging conditions are conducted. The results indicate that the aging treatment with the fine-grained microstructure exhibits better hardness and high tensile properties than those of the coarse-grained microstructure. The highest hardness value and high tensile strength are obtained from the aged condition of $300^{\circ}C$ for 360 min due to the presence of the metastable ${\dot{\gamma}}$ precipitates on the grain boundaries. The values of the highest hardness and tensile strength are measured as 374 Hv and 1236.2 MPa, respectively. The metastable ${\dot{\gamma}}$ precipitates are transferred to the equilibrium ${\gamma}$ precipitates due to the over-aged treatment. The presence of the ${\gamma}$ precipitates appears as nodule-like precipitates decorated around the grain boundaries. The welding electrode with the best aging treated condition exhibits better welding performance for electrodes than those of electrodes used previously.

  • The microstructure of Al-5%Mg based alloy mainly consists of aluminum matrix with a small amount of AlMn phase. The addition of Sc or Zn to the base alloy significantly improved the as-cast tensile strength, while the addition of Fe deteriorated both strength and ductility. Although the Al-5%Mg based alloy was not heat-treatable, aging hardening could be observed in the case that Sc or Zn was added to the base alloy. TEM analysis showed that very fine AlSc or AlMgZn precipitates were formed after T6 heat treatment, resulting in enhanced strength. The corrosion resistance measured as corrosion potential was found to decrease a little by adding Zn, whereas other alloying elements were not clearly influential.

  • Ferritic stainless steel is recently used in high temperature structures because of its good properties of thermal fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and low price. Tensile and low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests on 429EM stainless steel used in exhaust manifold were performed at several temperatures from room temperature to 80$0^{\circ}C$. Elastic Modulus, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength monotonically decreased when temperature increased. Cyclic hardening occurred considerably during the most part of the fatigue life. Dynamic strain aging was observed in 200~50$0^{\circ}C$, which affects the cyclic hardening behavior. Among the fatigue parameters such as plastic strain amplitude, stress amplitude, and plastic strain energy density (PSED), PSED was a proper fatigue parameter since it maintained at a constant value during LCF deformation even though cyclic hardening occurs considerably. A phenomenological life prediction model using PSED was proposed considering the influence of temperature on fatigue life.

  • This study investigates the nano/microstructure, the aging response, and the mechanical/tribological properties of the eutectic regions in rheoformed A356 alloy-T5 parts using nano/micro-indentation and mechanical scratching, combined with optical microscopy and atomic force microscope (AFM). Most eutectic Si crystals in the A356 alloy showed a modified morphology as fine-fibers. The loading curve for the eutectic region was more irregular than that of the primary Al region due to the presence of various particles of varying strength. The aging responses of the eutectic regions in the rheoformed A356 alloys aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for different times (0, 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 24, 36, and 72 h) were investigated. Both Victors hardness $(H_v)$ and indentation $(H_{IT})$ test results showed a similar trend of aging curves, and the peak was obtained at the same aging time of 10 h. A remarkable size-dependence of the tests was found.

  • Workability and aging behavior of Mg-Li-Al alloys hate been investigated with variation of Li and Al contents. It was found that ${\alpha}$(HCP) + ${\beta}$(BCC) two phase structure reveals better workability than ${\alpha}$(HCP) single phase structure. Increase of workability is attributed to the additional slip on pyramidal and prism planes besides the slip on basal plane of HCP Mg. Workability of ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$ two phase structure is improved with increased amount of Al. Among alloys studied in the present study, reduction limit up to 62 % was obtained for Mg-8.08Li-4.26Al. MgL$i_2$Al(${\theta}$) aging precipitation was observed in ${\alpha}$+ ${\beta}$ two phase structure, while it was not in a single phase structure. Result of microhardness reveals peak hardness for ${\alpha}$ +${\beta}$ two phase structure due to $\theta$ precipitate in ${\theta}$ phase. In ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$ two phase Mg-Li-Al alloys, hardness increased with increasing amount of Al. It is believed that addition of Al raised the amount Al partition in u phase and ${\theta}$ precipitation in ${\beta}$ phase.

  • The nano/microstructure, the aging response (in T5 heat treatment), and the mechanical/tribological properties of the eutectic regions in squeeze-cast A356 alloy were investigated using nano/micro-indentation and mechanical scratching, combined wit optical microscopy and atomic force microscope(AFM). Most eutectic Si crystals in the A356 alloy showed a modified morphology as fine-fibers. The loading curve for the eutectic region was more irregular than that of the primary Al region due to the presence of various particles of varying strength. In addition, the eutectic region showed lower pile-up and higher elastic recovery than the primary Al region. The aging responses of the eutectic regions in the squeeze-cast A356 alloys aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for different times(0, 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 24, 36 and 72 h) were investigated. As the aging time increased, acicular Si particles in the eutectic regions gradually came to a fine structure. Both Vickers hardness ($H_V$) and indentation ($H_{IT}$) test results showed almost the same trend of aging curves, and the peak was obtained at the same aging time of 10 h. A remarkable size-dependence of the tests was found. The friction coefficient for the eutectic region was lower than that for the primary Al region.
