  • Uldolmok tidal current power plant was constructed on May 2009 at Jindo Gun in Korea. However it had much trouble in installing structure due to the extremely fast tidal current velocity(max. 5.5m/sec) and the jacket type plant structure. Therefore in this paper, The characteristics of tidal current and sea bed topography at Uldolmok tidal current plant site are investigated, and the detailed foundation work process of the plant is described.

  • In this paper, we described the fundamental concepts of proposed structural health monitoring system for Uldolmok Tidal Current Power Plant focusing on the use of smart sensors including fiber bragg grating sensors and macro fiber composite sensors. The structural health monitoring system can play an important role to maintain the structural safety for offshore structures like as bridges and high-rise buildings. In the case of tidal current power plant, the monitoring system is much more important since the structures are usually constructed at the site with severer environmental loadings such as high current speed.

  • Burning the fossil fuel in the thermal power plants causes green house gas emission. Monitoring of CO2 emission of the thermal power plants is growing more important because the amount produced by them is more than 20 percent of national total emission. This paper proposes a method to calculate the amount of the CO2 emission w.r.t. generator[MW] output using the input-output coefficients of the thermal power plants. The power flow computation together with the CO2 emission calculation are demonstrated in a sample power system.

  • Development of smart sensors for structural health monitoring and damage detection has been advanced remarkably in recent years. Nowadays fiber optic sensors, especially fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, have attracted many researchers' interests for their attractive features, such as multiplexing capability, durability, lightweight, electromagnetic interference immunity. In this paper, a damage detection approach of jacket-type offshore structures by principal component analysis (PCA) technique using FBG sensors are presented. An experimental study for a tidal current power plant structure as one of the jacket-type offshore structures was conducted to investigate the feasibility of the proposed method for damage monitoring. It has been found that the PCA technique can efficiently eliminate environmental effects from measured data by FBG sensors, resulting more damage-sensitive features under various environmental variations.
