Dehydration Characteristics of Cationic Surfactant-Modified Montmorillonite (양이온성 계면활성제로 표면개질된 몬모릴로나이트의 탈수 특성)

  • The dehydration of hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA)-exchanged montmorillonite has been studied using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The dehydration in HDTMA-montmorillonite seems to influence the swelling behavior of the organo-clay during heating. The basal d(001) spacing vs temperature curve of the HDTMA-montmorillonite has one broad swelling edge with a shoulder on the low-temperature side. We believe that the shoulder at $100^{\circ}C$ for the HDTMA-montmorillonite is due to interlayer swelling induced by the initial rearrangement of surfactants, and the second edge at $200^{\circ}C$ is caused by interlayer swelling resulting from the secondary vertical reorientation of alkyl chains. It seems that the dehydration of organo-clay induces a reorientation of the alkyl chains by transition to more vertical position relative to the silicate sheets, allowing instantly greater d-spacing.

Study on Type of Different Polyols for Physical Properties of Polyurethane Foam Under Sea Water (해수에서 폴리올 종류가 폴리우레탄 폼의 물성에 미치는 영향)

  • Rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) was synthesized with different contents of aliphatic polyester polyol, aromatic polyester polyol and aliphatic polyether polyol to know change of properties under sea water. UTM(universal testing machine), DSC(differential scanning calorimetry), hardness meter and FT-IR(Fourier transform spectroscopy) were used to study the PUF`s physical properties under sea water. Compressive strength and hardness of PUF decreased with increasing the content of aromatic polyester polyol under sea water as aging. According to the results of IR spectral analysis, reduction of urethane and urea peak was found and allophanate and biuret peak increased. Although glass transition temperature of PUF increased, mechanical properties of PUF decreased under sea water, because PUF gets brittle when crosslink density increase.

Characterizations of Flexible Clay-PVA Hybrid Films: Thermo-optical Properties, Morphology, and Gas Permeability (유연한 점토-폴리(비닐 알코올) 하이브리드 필름의 특성 연구: 열적.광학적 성질, 모폴로지, 및 가스 투과성)

  • To improve $Na^+$-saponite(SPT) film flexibility, we prepared SPT hybrid clay films with various poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) concentrations(0~10 wt%) using the solution intercalation method. In this study, we investigated the thermo-optical properties, morphology, and gas permeability of the SPT hybrid films. We also examined the relationship between the film properties and PVA content using wide angle X-ray diffraction measurements(XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), thermomechanical analysis(TMA), ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis) spectroscopy, and oxygen transmission rate($O_2$TR) testing. The properties of the clay hybrid films were strongly affected by PVA filler content. The presence of a small amount of PVA was sufficient to improve the flexibility of SPT hybrid films.

Changes in Physicochemical Properties of Brown and Milled Rices during Storage (현미와 백미의 저장중 이화학적 성질의 변화)

  • The changes in water uptake rate, cooking properties, color of rice grains and gelatinization properties of brown and milled rices during storage were studied. The brown and milled rices were stored at $4^{\circ}$ and $25^{\circ}C$ for 5 and 3 months, respectively. The water uptake rate constants of rices during hydration at $30^{\circ}$ were linearly decreased during storage. The volume increase rate also showed similar trend to the water uptake rate. The terminal point of cooking of milled rice at $100^{\circ}$ in a sealed brass vessel was about a half of that of brown rice. The cooking rate of milled rice was 1.8 times faster than that of brown rice. The cooking rate constant of both brown and milled rices linearly decreased with the increase of storage time. The L(lightness) value increased for brown rice grain and remained unchanged for milled rice grain during storage. The peak viscosity of rice flours by amylograph increased during storage, but enthalpy for gelatinization decreased, as measured by differential scanning calorimetry.

Effects os Stoichiometric Ratio on Dynamic Mechanical Behavior for an Epoxy/Anhydride System (에폭시/산무수물계에서 동역학적 거동에 미치는 화학양론비의 효과)

  • 본 연구에서는 에폭시/산무수물계에 화학양론비(r=산무수물/에폭시)를 0.5, 0.7,0.9,1.1로 변화시켜 서로 다른 두종류의 경화촉진제 1-cyanoethy1-2-ethy1-4-methy1 imidazole(2E4MZ-CN)과 N,N-dimethy1 benzy1 amine(BDMZ)을 첨가한 시료에 대한 경화거동과 경화 후 물성을 관찰하였다. 이 시료의 등온 경화거동은 동역학 측정기(dynamic mechanical analyzer, DMA)와 시차주사 열량분석기(differential scanning calorimeter, DSC)를 이용하여 조사하였다. DMA로부터 구해진 결과를 보면 경화시 상대저장강성을 (relative storage rigidity, RSR)과 상대손실강성율(relative loss rigidity, RSR)과 상대손실강성율(relative loss rigidity, RLR)의 변화가 r값과 경화촉진제의 종류에 영향을 받았다. 그리고 DSC결과는 r값이 감소함에 따라 경화가 촉진되는 것으로 나타났다. 경화물의 성질을 조사하기 위하여 사용된 DMA로부터 얻어진 유리전이온도(glass transition temperature, T$_{g}$)와 가교결합간의 평균분자량(average molecular weigh between crosslinks, M$_{c}$은 사용한 두 경화촉진제에 대하여 r값의 영향이 다르게 나타났다. BDMA의 경우는 T$_{g}$가 1:1화학양론비인 r=0.9에서 최고치를 보였으나, 2E4MZ-CN은 r이 감소함에 따라 계속 증가하는 양상을 보였다. 이와 같은 경향은 2E4MZ-CN을 경화촉진제로 사용하였을 때 에폭시가 과량으로 될수록 잔류 에폭시기들간의 에케르반응이 추가적으로 일어나 M$_{c}$가 감소하기 때문이다.

  • Bio-based nylon 6-morpholinone random copolymers were prepared by the anionic ring opening polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam and morpholinone, both of which were prepared from lysine and glucose, respectively. From this work, a new biomass based nylon 6 with improved hydrophilicity was prepared. Optimizing the polymerization condition, copolymer with a viscosity-average molecular weight of 30000 g/mol was prepared, with a yield of 80%. It was possible to improve the hydrophilicity of nylon 6 by its copolymerization with morpholinone. The prepared nylon 6-morpholinone random copolymers were then characterized using several analytical methods such as DSC, TGA, XRD, viscosity measurement with U-shaped glass capillary viscometer and contact angle measurement.

Fire Hazard of PP and LLDPE dust in Chemical Plant Process (석유화학플랜트에서 발생하는 PP(Poly Propylene) 및 LLDPE(Linear Low Density Poly Ethylene) 분진의 연소 위험성에 관한 연구)

  • Thermal properties of PP and LLDPE dusts from chemical plant and their risks of coexisting with oxidizer were investigated by a pressure vessel. The thermal decomposition of PP and LLDPE dusts with temperature using DSC and the weight loss with temperature using TGA were also investigated to find the thermal hazard of PP and LLDPE dusts. Using the pressure vessel which can estimate ignition and explosion of PP and LLDPE dusts coexisting with oxidizer, a series of bursting of a rupture disc, experiments has been conducted by varying the orifice diameters the weight ratio of the sample coexisting with oxidizers and the species of oxidizer. And fire gases was measured by gas analyser ($ECOM-A^+$). According to the results of the thermal analysis of PP and LLDPE dusts, the decomposition temperature range of PP and LLDPE dusts was 200 to 350 and 300 to $500^{\circ}c$, respectively. The risk of PP and LLDPE dusts coexisting with oxidizer was increased as the orifice diameter was decreased. On the other hand, it was increased as the weight ratio of the sample to the oxidizer were increased. In addition, the risk of PP and LLDPE dusts coexisting with oxidizer was affected by the decomposition temperature of the sample and oxidizer. It is found that the risk of fire becomes high when the decomposition temperature of the sample is about same as that of oxidizer. Also, the fire gases was occurred carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The amount of carbon monoxide generated was found to be much higher in PP decomposition than in LLDPE due to incomplete combustion of PP which has high content of carbon in chemical compound.

Development and Application of Cellulose Nanofiber Powder as a Nucleating Agent in Polylactic Acid (나노셀룰로오스 분말 개발과 폴리젖산 내 핵제 적용 연구)

  • Because of the global pollution caused by plastic disposal, demand for eco-friendly transformation in the packaging industry is increased. As part of that, the utilization of polylactic acid (PLA) as a food packaging material is increased. However, it is necessary to improve the crystallinity of PLA by adding nucleating agents or to improve the modulus by adding fillers because of the excessive brittleness of the PLA matrix. Thus, the cellulose nanofiber (CNF) was fabricated and dried to obtain a powder form and applied to the CNF/PLA nanocomposite. The effect of CNF on the morphological, thermal, rheological, and dynamic mechanical properties of the composite was analyzed. We can confirm the impregnated CNF particle in the PLA matrix through the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed that the crystallinity of not annealed CNF/PLA nanocomposite was increased approximately 2 and 4 times in the 1st and 2nd cycle, respectively, with the shift to lower temperature of cold crystallization temperature (Tcc) in the 2nd cycle. Moreover, the crystallinity of annealed CNF/PLA nanocomposite increased by 13.4%, and shifted Tcc was confirmed.
