  • Immersion tests with artificial seawater were carried out to investigate the resistance to seawater attack of 5 types of cement matrices. From the results of compressive strength and length change, it was found that blended cement mortars due to mineral admixtures, were superior to portland cement mortars with respect to the resistance to seawater attack. Moreover, XRD analysis indicated that the peak intensity ratio of low heat portland cement(LHC) paste, in portland cement pastes, had better results, and so did that of blended cement Paste. Pore volume of pastes by mercury intrusion porosimetry method demonstrated that total pore volume of ordinary portland cement(OPC) paste had a remarkable increase comparing with that of other pastes. In case of immersion of artificial seawater, the use of ground granulated blast-furnace slag and fly ash, however, showed the beneficial effects of 56% and 32% in reduction of total pore volume, respectively.

  • The present study concerns the acid neutralization capacity (ANC) of cement paste, mortar and concrete depending on a free water-cement ratio. The ANC of paste at 30%, 40% and 50% of water-cement ratio was measured and simultaneously the effect of aggregate on the ANC was evaluated. It was found that an increase in the acid concentration resulted in a decrease in the pH of the suspension, in particular, at 10 in the pH, a sharp decrease was observed. The ANC showed some peak resistances to acid at particular pH values.

  • Polycarboxylate-type superplasticizer is widely used for producing self-compacting and high-strength concrete and improving concrete durability. This paper discusses the influence of molecular structure of polycarboxylate-type superplasticizer on the fluidity and the rate of heat liberation of ordinary Portland cement paste. The fluidity of cement paste was increased by addition of polycarboxylate-type superplasticizer. The arrival time up to the maximum rate of heat liberation was increased by addition of polycarboxylate-type superplasticizer. The fluidity and the arrival time up to the maximum rate of heat liberation were more influenced by addition of polycarboxylate-type superplasticizer having shorter grafted chain than that having longer grafted chain.

  • It was investigated to evaluate the characteristics of cement-flyash paste which was affected the replacement level, curing method and chemical admixtures. The strength of cement-flyash paste was lower than that of cement paste only and the differences increased with increasing the replacement level. However, in steam curing, the strength of cement-flyash pastes was improved and specially, the early strength was effectively increased. The inclusion of $Na_2SO_4$ increased the early strength of cement-flyash paste. In addition, the strength of concrete including 30% of fly ash and $Na_2SO_4$ has improved and obtained the highest strength compared to other concrete mixes.

  • In this study, the fluidity, mechanical properties and microstructure of cement pastes with carbon nanotube (CNT) were experimentally investigated. The 6 types of cement paste mixes with different PCE:CNT and w/b had been manufactured, and several tests including flow, compressive strength, absorption and water porosity were performed on cement pastes with or without CNT.Additionally, microstructural observations such as x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were carried out to examine hydrates formed in cement paste with CNT. As a result, it was found that the performance of cement pastes with CNT was better compared to that of control cement paste (OPC) due to both of hydration acceleration effect and filling effect. Furthermore, the SEM images clearly showed that CNT can bridge cracks formed in cement matrix. Conclusively, it is believed that the CNT, if mixed appropriately, could be an option as nono-materials to improve performance of concrete structures.

  • In this study, the effect of nanofibers in cement pastes on the compressive and tensile strength of hardened cement pastes was studied. Two types of nanofibers, nylon 66 nanofibers and carbon nanotube-nylon 66 hybrid nanofibers, were manufactured by electrospinning methodology and mixed in cement powder respectively. The specimens for experiments were prepared by water to cement ratio of 0.5 and cured in water for 28 days. The effect of nanofibers on the increase of the compressive and tensile strength were confirmed by the experimental results. The well-linking effect of nanofibers in the microstructure of the hardened cement pastes has been found by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis and well-explained for the increase in mechanical strength. Besides, field emission transmission electron microscope (FE-TEM) analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) have also been conducted to analyze the properties of nanofibers as well as the microstructure of the hardened modified cement pastes.

  • The percolation threshold of the CNT-reinforced cement paste is closely related to the optimal CNT amount to maximize the sensing ability of self-sensing concrete. However, the percolation threshold has various values depending on the cement, CNT, and water-to-cement ratio used. In this study, a percolation simulation model was proposed to predict the percolation threshold of the CNT-reinforced cement paste. The proposed model can simulate the percolation according to the amount of CNT using only the properties of CNT and cement, and for this, the concept of the number of aggregated CNT particles was used. The percolation simulation consists of forming a pre-hydrated cement paste model, random dispersion of CNTs, and percolation investigation. The simulation used CNT-reinforced cement paste with a water-cement ratio of 0.4 to 0.6, and the simulated percolation threshold point showed high accuracy with a simulation residual ratio of up to 7.5 % compared to the literature results.

  • A comparative study on the effects of mean particle diameter and substitutional ratio of II-anhydrite on the fluidity of cement paste has been conducted. Three different mean particle diameters(4, 14 and $35{\mu}m$) and four different substitution ratios(3, 5, 10, 15wt%) have been tested while the dosage of two superplasticizers - naphtalenic(NSF) and polycarboxylic(NT-2) - has been varied from 0 to 2.0wt%. To investigate the effects of those parameters, the variation in fluidity and apparent viscosity of the cement paste has been observed as a function of the elapsed time. The initial fluidity of the cement paste is more affected by the increase in substitution ratio than by the mean particle size of the II-anhydrite. When the substitution ratio of the II-anhydrite is fixed at 10wt%, addition of 1.0wt% NT-2 improves the fluidity of paste cement more than that for NSF. This case has showed the best improvement of the fluidity in the range of parameters investigated. At the addition of 1.0wt% NT-2, apparent viscosity of the cement paste has been noticeably decreased as substitutional ratio of II-anhydrite increases. It was found that it would be more effective to substitute II-anhydrite at a certain ratio to improve the fluidity of the cement paste, in addition to adding NT-2.

  • The rheological properties of cement paste system mixed with mineral admixtures (MAs) used to increase the strength and improve durability and fluidity of concrete were investigated. And cement paste systems were designed as one-, two- and three-ingredients blended paste systems. The rheological properties of paste systems were assessed by Rotovisco RT 20 rheometer (Hakke inc.) having a cylindrical serrated spindle. The rheological properties of one-ingredient paste systems were improved with increasing the dosage of superplasticizer. For two-ingredients paste systems, as increasing the replacement ratio of blast furnace slag (BFS) and fly ash (FA), the yield stress and plastic viscosity were decreased compared with non-replacement. In the ordinary portland cement (OPC)-silica fume (SF) paste systems, in accordance with an increase in the replacement ratio of SF, the yield stress and plastic viscosity were increased steeply. For three-ingredients paste systems, both OPC-BFS-SF and OPC-FA-SF paste systems, the rheological properties were improved compared with the only replacement of SF. In the case of both two-and three-ingredients paste systems, the rheological properties using BFS were improved more than FA.

  • The objective of the present study is to examine the feasibility on the development of high-insulation concrete using aerogels with hydrophilic surface treatment. To prevent the segregation and enhance the dispersibility of agerogels in the cement pastes, the substrate of aerogels was modified to be hydrophobic property using surfactant. The modified aerogels were added from 0% to 100% of the cement volume at the interval of 25% under the constant cement content. Some cement pastes showed segregation phenomenon and flocculation of aerogels during mixing phase. The addition of aerogels decreased the compressive strength of cement pastes but enhanced the thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of pastes with 100% aerogels was lower by 43% when compared with that measured in the conventional paste. To improve the compressive strength and insulation capacity of concrete containing aerogels, a reliable surface treatment method of aerogels needs to be further investigated.
