For this study, data were collected from 129 participants of productive welfare institutions in Busan. The results of this study are as follows. First, contact services and communication have a statistically significant impact on the financial performance of productive welfare institutions. Second, contact services and communication have a statistically significant impact on non-financial performance of productive welfare institutions. Based on the results of this study, the following suggestions are made. First, institutionalization of CS(customer service) education should be carried out in order to improve the management performance of productive welfare institutions. Second, participants' emotional support programs are needed to improve the management performance of productive welfare institutions.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the personal factors affecting the ideation of suicide to identify the risk factors of suicide and to provide basic data for suicide prevention. The study subjects were 260 elderly people aged 65 or older who use the elderly general welfare center, the elderly classroom, and the senior club living in Jecheon City. The results of this study showed that personal factors affecting the idea of suicide in the elderly were significant in psychological factors such as stress, depression and loneliness. This means that the higher the stress, depression, and loneliness, the higher the elderly's suicide thought. In addition, the most influential factors in the idea of suicide of the elderly were stress, followed by loneliness and depression. Based on these findings, first, psychological treatment and prevention programs are needed to prevent suicide in the elderly. Second, it is necessary to expand the mental health support system, education and service for the elderly. Third, it is necessary to develop and disseminate stress coping, easing and arbitration programs.

  • This study was performed to test the influence of older people's satisfaction factors (safety and convenience) of housing environment on their quality of life and the mediating effect of self-esteem and depression. In this study, from 386 older people over the age of 60 in senior welfare center and senior club of Cheongju region, the data were collected by questionnaire during October, 2012. The findings of this study are as follows: First, safety had not any significant influence on older people's quality of life, while convenience had a significant positive influence on their quality of life. Second, safety had not any significant influence on older people's self-esteem and depression, while convenience had a significant positive influence on older people's self-esteem and it had a significant negative influence on their depression Third, older people's self-esteem had a significant positive influence on their quality of life, while older people's depression had a significant negative influence on their quality of life. Fourth, between safety and older people's quality of life, the indirect effects of older people's self-esteem and depression as mediating variables were not found. However, between convenience and older people's quality of life, the indirect effects of older people's self-esteem and depression as mediating variables were found. This study shows that various measures for convenience of housing environment need to be prepared to increase older people's quality of life and self-esteem and to lessen their depression.

  • Purpose: Healthy and balanced meal is very important for the elderly to maintain the quality of life in community. Senior meal delivery system and congregate meal services have been played an important role to prevent premature institutionalization of the elderly. Food delivery system and lunch service spaces for the Korean elderly were mostly focused and limited on low-income family. The purpose of this study is to analyze community food services environments for the elderly in the UK, the U.S. and Japan for the possibility of applying those service spaces to Korean community. Methods: Lunch service spaces of these three countries were investigated by literature research and visiting of venues. Pilot study of the elderly meal services in Seoul was done for comparing environments and future research. Results: Lunch service spaces in three countries were mostly community based for accessibility and the types of management were various for the elderly to choose the most suitable services for them. The group dining spaces are usually small and designed to give de-institutional atmosphere. Implications: Food service environments for the elderly in Korea should develop more community based model of food delivery and congregate meal service spaces as well as more de-institutionalized design of those spaces.

Inter-and Intra-rater Reliabilities of Myotonometric Measurement of the Erector Spinae Muscles in the Young and Old Age Groups (청년과 노인 연령군에 따른 척주세움근에 대한 마이오톤의 측정자 간, 측정자 내 신뢰도)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to examine inter-and intra-rater reliabilities of myotonometric measurements of tone, elasticity and stiffness for the erector spinae muscles of the young and the elderly populations. Methods : A total of 102 (69 young adults from K university and 33 older adults from the D community center in Daejeon) were enrolled in this study. The two different raters measured each side of the erector spinae muscles at prone position. After each rater performed first measurement for a subject, 30 minutes of rest was given. The same rater then repeated the second myometric measurement on the subject. The collected data on the tone, elasticity, and stiffness of the erector spinae were analyzed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to determine inter- and intra- rater reliabilities. Results : The inter-and intra-rater reliabilities of the myotonometric measurement of the erector spinae for the total subjects were excellent (ICC > 0.9, p < 0.001). Within each of the elderly group and the young group, inter- and intra-rater reliabilities were also excellent (ICC > 0.8~0.9 / p < 0.001, ICC > 0.75~0.9 / p < 0.001, each). Conclusion : The measurement of muscle tone, elasticity, and stiffness for the erector spinae muscles using the myotonometer had excellent reliability. It was confirmed that a highly reliable myometric measurement on the erector spinae can be obtained regardless of whether it is from young or elderly people. This suggests that the myotonometer can be a useful tool to measure muscular properties of the erector spinae of the young and old as an evaluative instrument.
