Antioxidant Activities of Young and Mature Fruit in Three Asian Pear Cultivars (동양배 품종별 유과기와 수확기 과실의 항산화 활성)

  • This study was performed to compare antioxidant activities of 80% EtOH extracts from young and mature fruit of three pear cultivars ('Wonhwang', 'Whangkeumbae', and 'Chuwhangbae') classified by three parts (peel, core, and flesh) of mature fruit. The total phenolics compound and flavonoid contents of 80% EtOH extracts from young fruit were 1.5-2.5 times higher than the mature fruit with great cultivar difference. In particular, the contents of those compounds were highest in 'Chuwhangbae' pear. The total phenolics compound and flavonoid contents of 80% EtOH extracts from mature fruit were the most in the peel, core, and flesh respectively. DPPH radical scavenging and $ABTS^+$ radical scavenging of 80% EtOH extracts from the young fruit were higher than the mature fruit of 'Chuwhangbae' pear. DPPH radical scavenging and ABTS+ radical scavenging of 80% EtOH extracts from mature fruit were the highest in the peel, core, and flesh respectively.

  • Algorithms from the research of the layout migration were proposed in the paper. These are automatic recognition algorithm for the VLSI devices from it, graph based construction algorithm to maintain the constraints, dependencies, and design rule between the devices, and high speed compaction algorithm to reduce size of the VLSI area and reuse the design with compacted size for the new technology. Also, this paper describes that why proposed algorithms are essential for the era of the SoC (System on a Chip), design reuse, and IP DB, which are the big concerns in these days. In addition to introduce our algorithms, the benchmark showed that our performance is superior by 27 times faster than that of the commercial one, and has better efficiency by 3 times in disk usage.

  • The recent availability of recombinant human erythropoietin has opened new perspectives in the management of a variety of anemias. Clinical trials have been initiated in several countries using different approaches and methodology. We randomly assigned twelve premature infants(gestational age < 32 week) at high risk of requiring erythrocyte transfusion for anemia of prematurity with either subcutaneous recombinant human erythropoietin or a placebo. Treatment with rHuEPO was initiated at a dose of 100 units/kg day for 3 days a week. All patients were given supplemental oral iron therapy at a dose of 3 mg/kg per day, as tolerated and oral vitamin E at a dose of 25 units per day. Treated and control babies did not differ with respect to weight, hematocrit, overall mean reticulocyte count or rate of growth respectively. However, reticulocyte counts increased earlier in patients given rHuEPO. We conclude that rHuEPO administration is safe and feasible at the dose studied.

  • The Au-Ag deposit of the Oknam mine occurs as gold-silver-bearing rhodochrosite veins in biotite schist and phyllite of the Precambriam Yulri Group. Five stages of ore deposition are recognized, each showing a definite mineral assemblage. General mineral parageneses in veins (stage III) associated with gold and silver vary inwardly from the vein margin: arsenopyrite + pyrite $\Rightarrow$ sphalerite+chalcopyrite+galena+gold $\Rightarrow$ ga1ena+Ag-bearing minerals. Fluid inclusion data indicate that temperature and salinity of ore fluids overally decreased with time: $345^{\circ}{\sim}240^{\circ}C$ and 3.4~7.8 wt. % NaCl equiv during stage I (quartz vein mineralization), $313^{\circ}{\sim}207^{\circ}C$ and 2.3~8.7 wt.% NaCl equiv during manganese-bearing carbonate stages (II and III), and $328^{\circ}{\sim}213^{\circ}C$ and 3.6-5.4 wt.% NaCl equiv during stage IV (quartz vein mineralization). The ore fluids probably evolved through repeated pulses of boiling and later mixing with cooler and more dilute meteoric waters. Fluid inclusion data and geologic arguments indicate that pressures during the mineralization were in the range of 90 to 340 bars. Gold occurs as silver-rich electrums (21 to 29 atom. % Au) and was deposited at temperatures between $300^{\circ}$ and $240^{\circ}C$. Thermochemical calculations suggest that gold was deposited as a combined result of increase in pH and decreases in temperature, $fs_2$ and $fo_2$.

Nutritional quality of Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. leaves in relation to ripening time, growing condition and blanching (재배조건, 수확시기 및 열처리에 따른 갯기름나물의 영양성분 변화)

  • This work aimed to investigate the changes in the nutrient contents and antioxidant activity of Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. by ripening stage, growing condition, and blanching. The crude protein content of the young leaves (3.6~4.3%) was higher than that of the mature leaves (3.1~3.9%). Higher calcium contents were observed in the greenhouse-cultivated samples (225.9~259.2 mg/100 g) compared to the field-cultivated samples (178.5~199.5 mg/100 g). The vitamin C and folate contents (18.1~83.8 and 175.8~220.2 mg/100 g, respectively) of the field-cultivated samples were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of the greenhouse-cultivated samples (13.1~57.7 and 133.0~148.8 mg/100 g, respectively). The growing condition and blanching were significant factors affecting the changes in the vitamin and polyphenol contents. The ${\beta}$ carotene contents of the blanched samples increased 2.6-fold compared to those of the raw samples. The total polyphenol contents (10.2~17.1 mg/g extract) and DPPH radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}=2.0{\sim}3.0mg/ml$) of the blanched samples were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those of the raw samples (1.8~4.3 and $IC_{50}=16.2{\sim}21.1mg/ml$, respectively).

  • Probiotics has currently attracted for means of preventive treatment measurement instead of using non-specific and broad spectrum antimicrobials. In previous studies, two main probiotics species, Lactobacillus and Bifidobateria, showed the reduction of DMFS and S. mutans counts. However, the timing of introducing probiotic species to oral cavity is not clear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the changes of binding ability of S. mutans in various concentrations and inoculation time of L. rhamnosus GG. Adding the following concentration of L. rhamnosus GG, $1{\times}10^6$ CFU, $1{\times}10^7$ CFU and $1{\times}10^8$ CFU, to S. mutans medium demonstrates significant reduction of S. mutans counts. Additionally, more reduction was observed when L. rhamnosus were inoculated prior to S. mutans or simultaneously inoculated compared to when S. mutans were inoculated prior to L. rhamnosus after 3 hours of incubation. Based on this research, the timing of introducing probiotics should be considered when probiotics are utilized as a preventive treatment measurement.

Quality Characteristics of Tofu with Added Astringent Persimmon Powder (떫은감 분말의 첨가에 따른 두부의 제조와 품질 특성)

  • Quality characteristics of tofu as affected by addition time (before or after coagulant) and the amount (0, 3, 6, and 9%) of astringent persimmon fruit (Diospyros kaki T. cv. Cheongdobansi) powder added were investigated. Yield and sensory acceptability were higher in tofu prepared by adding persimmon before than after adding the coagulant. The yield of tofu with added persimmon was higher than that of the control. The L value of the tofu decreased as the amount of added persimmon increased. Hardness, chewiness, and crispness of tofu made with 6% persimmon were higher than those of the others. DPPH radical scavenging activity tended to increase as persimmon concentration increased but no significant difference was observed between the 3% and 6% added persimmon treatments. A sensory evaluation showed no significant differences in aroma, beany, astringency, and texture. However, the 9% sample had the significantly lowest score for overall acceptability. Thus, astringent persimmon powder (3-6%, before coagulant addition) can be utilized as an additive during tofu processing.

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate the possibility of wine-making with Elderberry cultivated in Korea. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The Elderberry fruits were composed of 82.8% moisture, 0.82% crude fat, 3.73% crude protein and 0.83% crude ash. 2. The Elderberry juices were composed of 9.2% sugar, 0.62% total acidity (as tartaric acid), pH 4. 46 and the percentage juice extraction ratio from fruits was 61.4%. 3. In fermentation experiments carried out with two strains, Saccharomyces cerevisiae ellipsoideus showed better characteristics for wine-making than Saccharomyces cerevisiae montrachet. 4. In fermentation experiments carried out with Saccharomyces cerevisiae ellipsoideus under different storage conditions, frozen fruits showed better characteristics for wine-making than dried fruits. 5. In fermentation experiments carried out with Saccharomyces cerevisiae ellipsoideus under different pressing times, red wine and pink wine showed little difference. 6. The results of organic acid contents determined by gas chromatography showed that citric acid was the main acid for frozen fruit, and lactic acid for both dried fruit and wines. 7. Sensory evaluation showed that the wine pressed at the 3rd day had the best palatability but the wine fermented with the dried fruits had the worst among the tested.

Development of Pig IVM/IVF Produced Embryos to Hatching Blastocysts In Vitro as Affected by Amino Acids and Serum (아미노산과 혈청이 돼지 체외수정란의 부화에 미치는 영향)

  • 체외성숙과 수정된 돼지 난자의 체외발달능이 체외배발생 배양액인 NCSU 배양액에 0.4% BSA, 10% 혈청 혹은 아미노산(2% BME 아미노산 용액과 1% MEM 아미노산 용액)을 첨가함으로써 조사되었다. 본 실험에 공시된 난자는 체외수정 후 30시간 (2-세포기) 혹은 48시간 (2~4-세포기)에 회수하였다. 실험 I에서 0.4% BSA가 첨가된 NCSU 배양액에서 2-세포기 난자들의 배양경과시간에 따른 발달능을 조사한 결과, 배양 후 72시간 (체외수정 후 102 시간)에 상실배와 배반포기가 나타났으며, 배양 후 120시간째(체외수정 후 150시간)에도 팽창된 배반포까지만 발달하였다. 실험 II는 체외수정 후 48시간의 분할된(2~8-세포기) 난자들의 핵과 외관적 분할구와의 수적 차이를 조사한 결과, 2~4-세포기보다는 5-세포기 이상에서 핵과 분할구의 조화에 차이가 많았다. 실험III에서는 BSA, 혈청 혹은 아미노산이 첨가 혹은 무첨가된 배양액내에서 2~4-세포기 난자들의 배반포 후 부화능력을 조사한 결과, 모든 군에 있는 난자들은 팽창된 배반포까지 발달할 수 있었던 반면, 난자의 부화는 아미노산 혹은 혈청이 포함된 배양액에서만 일어났다. 더욱이 상실배와 배반포시기에 혈청의 첨가는 부화 배반포기 배의 발달을 현저히 증가시켰다. 이상의 결과로 미루어 볼 때, 배양액내에 대한 아미노산과 혈청의 첨가는 돼지 배반포의 부화를 유도할 수 있다고 본다.

  • The longer pollen stage grew to flowering stage, the higher anther respiratory rate in vivo became. and it was rapidly increased just before flowering. The anther respiratory rate in vitro showed the first and second peak points after 3-7 days and 9-1l days in culture, respectively, and fastest and highest in Daecheongbyeo with high sporophytic potentiality. It was lower in cold-pretreatment than non-treatment at the early days, but higher from 15 days after culture. The frequency of browning anthers was promoted by cold-pretreatment. The respiratory rate was not different between uncolored and browned anthers at 12 days, but it was higher in browned anthers after 24 days in culture.
